[ha-Safran] Recommendation needed: free library software
Our adult education division has a small library and would like to have a way to keep track of the books and check them in and out. An administrative assistant will handle the details once I have gotten them up and running. If anyone can recommend user friendly library software that is either free or inexpensive, I'd be so appreciative! [ha-Safran] Open source library software question
Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best open source library software program for a small day school library? I've been asked to train volunteers, but I need to find an easy, free software program for them first. Thank you! Re: [ha-Safran] ALA Resolution
First of all, I had understood that HaSafran guidelines ask members to refrain from political statements, such as, But we Jews need to become much more resolute to end the occupation. I am surprised that comment was posted, and I do not believe it belongs on HaSafran. Second, Emily, I wonder if Natan Sharansky's 3D's would help you formulate arguments against divestment? They show the point at which criticism becomes anti-Semitism. The text of Sharansky's comments is included in the following report from the Wiesenthal Center. The report covers the BDS movement and may contain arguments you can use: http://www.wiesenthal.com/atf/cf/%7B54d385e6-f1b9-4e9f-8e94-890c3e6dd277%7D/REPORT_313.PDF . Here is the gist of what he says: 1. *Double Standards* -- Singling out Israel for criticism while ignoring the more egregious behavior of major human rights abusers in the Arab and Muslim world and beyond. 2.*Demonization of Israel* -- Distorting the Jewish State’s actions by means of insidious and false comparisons with the Nazis and/or South Africa’s Apartheid regime. 3. *Delegitimizatio*n -- When Israel’s fundamental right to exist is denied—alone among all nations in the world. [ha-Safran] Question about library automation software
I have been contacted by a day school that does not really have a budget for library automation software. Nevertheless, they would like to catalog their (mostly Judaic) collection. Does anyone know if there is free library software that is user friendly? They have library volunteers, but not a paid librarian. Thanks! [ha-Safran] Looking for a book
We are looking to purchase a used copy of *The Kosher Palette: Easy and Elegant Modern Kosher Cooking*, published in 2000 by the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy (I realize there is a newer edition, but we are looking for the first one). All the used copies are quite expensive. If anyone knows of an available copy that is more reasonably priced, we would appreciate hearing about it! Re: [ha-Safran] lending e-readers
We have two Kindles at Beth Tfiloh. I don't really see a danger that students will download books on the school credit card, because you can just disable the 1-Click setting on your school account. If you do that, nobody can go into the Kindle store (on the device) and just click buy -- you are prompted to enter a credit card. What we have done, instead of pre-loading the Kindles, is to download high-demand titles (so far it's been mainly classics that students are reading in English class). But I also intend to use the Kindles when we need a book quickly for a class assignment. You can order one copy and share it with more than one Kindle. Did you preload with themes in mind? Just Fiction and Biography, or other subjects as well? 3. Do you have a copy of the contract that you could share with us? 4. First, we have all patrons who check out the device sign a permission form that states clearly what it costs to replace the item if lost, and also that they are not allowed to download anything on their own. We disable the feature to do that with a password protection. One time we did not disable it and a student downloaded a book over the weekend that she borrowed the kindle. It was a book we would have purchased, so we let it go and told her that she did not have to pay for it, but we would have been asked to do that if we had decided to because her parent had signed the form. ** ** We have loaned out our 8 devices dozens of times and have only had that happen one time. We also did not store a credit card on the book site (Amazon or Barnes and Noble.) We stored the number of an American Express gift card that was worth $200. When the credit is gone, we can add a little at a time. But it is not a line of credit like a true credit card so not as dangerous to use. ** ** Lisa ** ** Lisa Silverman Library Director Sinai** **Temple Blumenthal Library 10400 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles**, **CA** **90024 310-481-3215 -- *From:* hasafran-bounces+lsilverman= sinaitemple@lists.service.ohio-state.edu [mailto: hasafran-bounces+lsilverman=sinaitemple@lists.service.ohio-state.edu] *On Behalf Of ***Susan Fried** *Sent:* Monday, June 25, 2012 3:53 PM *To:* Andrea Rapp *Cc:* Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu *Subject:* Re: [ha-Safran] lending e-readers ** ** I believe it’s necessary to enter a credit card into a Kindle or a Nook in the settings in order to be able to purchase books. Most people could probably figure out how to access the credit card on the reader. By allowing a reader to be “checked out” by a patron, could be (I believe) like lending out one’s credit card. ** ** ***Susan Fried*** Koopman Senior Librarian 860-231-6375 -- *From:* hasafran-bounces+sfried= jewishhartford@lists.service.ohio-state.edu [mailto: hasafran-bounces+sfried=jewishhartford@lists.service.ohio-state.edu] *On Behalf Of *Andrea Rapp *Sent:* Monday, June 25, 2012 12:03 PM *To:* Hasafran *Subject:* [ha-Safran] lending e-readers ** ** All, I am thinking of buying a couple of e-readers--putting some fiction on one of them and some biographies/memoirs on the other, and offer them for borrowing. I would go with the Nook, which is eager to work with libraries, and offers nearby stores where real human beings are there to help. [ha-Safran] Does anyone know...
Does anyone know where an established yeshiva day school can apply for grants for their library? Their library books have been neglected because there has been no paid staff and no book budget after the Avi Chai Bookshelf program ended. They rely solely on donations.
