[ha-Safran] Digitized journal The Reconstructionist
Shalom safranim! One of our professors has been using an electronic database of all issues of The Reconstructionist back to 1937. (It began in 1935.) Now tithas dIsappeared. It is important for her current research and we are trying to find out who produced it and if it is possible to have it resurrected. The Reconstructionist Rabbinical College has digitized issues on their website only back to 1986. If any of you can assist us in this please do so. We and the professor would be most grateful. [ha-Safran] Fwd: "Let the World Read and Know": The Warsaw Ghetto's Oneg Shabbat Archives at Warsaw's Jewish Historical Institute, 11/6/22
-- Forwarded message - From: Walter Reich Date: Fri, Nov 4, 2022 at 9:27 AM Subject: "Let the World Read and Know": The Warsaw Ghetto's Oneg Shabbat Archives at Warsaw's Jewish Historical Institute, 11/6/22 To: *"Let the World Read and Know": The Oneg Shabbat Archives* Sunday, November 6, 2022 2 PM EST | 8 PM CET | 9 PM SAST | 9 PM Israel This program is hosted by the Ghetto Fighters' House in partnership with the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the Polish Institute in Tel-Aviv, the Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre in Lublin, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center, Liberation 75, Classrooms without Borders, and the Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University. *Opening Remarks:* Monika Krawczyk, Director of the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI) *Guest Speakers:* Dr. Natalia Aleksiun *Who were they?Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oneg Shabbat Writers* Dr. Katarzyna Person *The Ringelblum Archive and the Jewish Historical Institute* >From the moment that its existence became widely known, the Ringelblum Archive (also known as the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto) was widely regarded as a collection of unusual significance. Under the initiative of historian Emanual Ringelblum, a group of social activists incarcerated in the Warsaw Ghetto created the archive between 1940 and 1943 with the aim to document the persecution of Jews in occupied Poland. Emulating the working principles of YIVO (Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut, Yiddish Scientific Institute), the Warsaw group gathered and produced a total of 35,000 pages of documents, in Polish, Yiddish, Hebrew, and German and stowed them away secretly within the Ghetto. Among the documents were diaries, accounts from approximately 300 Jewish communities from the whole territory of occupied Poland, school essays, research works, and official German documents: like posters, identification cards, and food ration cards. There were also some 70 photographs and over 300 drawings and paintings. The Archive was retrieved in parts from the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto: Part I (concealed on August 3, 1942) was found on September 18, 1946, and Part II (concealed in early February 1943) was found on December 1, 1950. Who were the people who created this archive? Dr. Natalia Aleksiun will share with us her research on the main contributors to one of the most important archives that was written as the events were happening. In her presentation, Dr. Katarzyna Person will discuss the academic significance of the archive and the methods used to bring this extraordinary collection to the wider public. *Register here <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://trailer.web-view.net/Links/0X752D151F3597A05D125D7098B9AD11B82BD3BD0A70251DB551421AB866D6EF9CD71FC40A1EA38007242812C3C3A47EC5264B05237E8A1509633524702A8D35E3DF7123185F36660D.htm__;!!KGKeukY!xNGwnR-ATAO7enlj-GJIQCSjfvQoHktUu1o6kLQBK4cPhMMb2uOKokr8xFBXP7pchoiZx-zX4k14GA3sxnqw$ >* or at https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMud-6sqzkpGdT92hxG34YshByIVVgm6Dtx__;!!KGKeukY!xNGwnR-ATAO7enlj-GJIQCSjfvQoHktUu1o6kLQBK4cPhMMb2uOKokr8xFBXP7pchoiZx-zX4k14GJo5Y7sI$ Please share this invitation with anyone who may be interested. -- Walter Reich Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Professor of International Affairs, Ethics and Human Behavior Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences The George Washington University [image: RabinChairForumLogo copy 2.jpg] -- Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. Dear Safranim, One of our professors visited some Dutch archives and says the handwriting of some of the early Dutch documents he was consulting are difficult to read. [ha-Safran] New Exhibit ishowcases the life and work of Dr. William Perl
*New Exhibit in George Washington University's Gelman Library showcases the life and work of Dr. William Perl* *Running from May 2018 until May 2020 * Please consider visiting Special Collections' latest exhibit, "William Perl: Man of Action," highlighting the dynamic and controversial life of William R. Perl (1906-1998.) A psychologist, lawyer, and a militant activist on behalf of Jewish causes, Perl is best known for his part in organizing clandestine Jewish immigration from Nazi-controlled Europe to British Mandatory Palestine. Drawing largely from the William R. Perl papers <https://library.gwu.edu/ead/ms2026.xml> held at Gelman Library, the exhibit considers this work as well as Perl's role in the war crimes trials after World War II, the rescue of his wife Lore from Soviet-controlled Vienna,, and his participation in the Jewish Defense League's efforts to promote the emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union. This small exhibit, on display outside of the Kiev Reading Room (Gelman room 710,) is accessible whenever Gelman Library is open. Non-GW guests will need to show photo ID at the entrance to Gelman Library in order to gain access to the exhibit space. -- Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. [ha-Safran] Jewish applicants to conservatories
Shalom Safranim. A colleague has received a question from a student. She describes it below. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. The student wants applicant data for major European conservatories to crunch the numbers re: Russian Jew violinists at the turn of the century. His professor has suggested this, or at least okayed it. I've been looking in WorldCat for books on the history of conservatories in Europe and in specific countries, but that doesn't seem to be much help. Aside from contacting the conservatories themselves, does anyone have any ideas? The applicant figures would have to include the numbers of Jewish students who applied. I'm just not convinced this information even exists--that these records would still be around. The student adds this: Of course, they could include: University of Music and Theatre Leipzig, The Paris Conservatorie, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and the Royal College of Music London. I reread my email, and I am afraid I erred slightly. In particular I am looking for applicants to these schools circa 1890s-1914 that were registered as being *Jewish*. -- Thank you. B'chavod rav. [ha-Safran] Encyclopedia of Hebrew Language and Linguistics
Shalom Safranim. Our library recently purchased this. I blame myself for not asking more timely questions of Brill (the publisher) of the possibility of any fees aside from the purchase price. I was thinking of maintenance fees and was told there are not any but that they intend to add material to the encyclopedia and that, as material is added,, there would likely be f fees to cover that starting in 2014 or 2015. In response. to further questioning, the sales representative said that, if a library chose not to pay further fees in the future, the company could send a disk wit the material purchased that could be loaded on aservers but would not have the finvttionality of the platform. None of this was mentioned in any of the promotional material I read. I assumed purchase meant a one time payment, period. So please be warned. And also, based upon thisexperience, I suggest asking very probing questions if you are considering purchasing anything electronic from Brill. B'chavod rav.
