[ha-Safran] picture book info needed

[Steven BERGSON]

The PJ Libray selected book Too Many Cooks : A Passover Parable reminded me of 
a similar-themed picture book I had read in my childhood.

The title I remember is Too Many Bubbies Spoil the Chicken Soup, but I may be 
experiencing poor recall (it was over 30 years ago).

If anyone knows the correct title & could provide the bibliographic info, I’d 
be quite grateful.

[ha-Safran] pre-order The Jewish Comix Anthology

As a follow-up to the recent interview in AJL Reviews, I just wanted to add 
that the Kickstarter campaign for The Jewish Comix Anthology will be ending in 
just 2 weeks (March 5th).

You may get a copy of the hardcover book for $30 (CDN) or $40 (for $40, you get 
the postcards, bookmarks, and a Golem t-shirt as well). A digital copy 
containing just the new stories is just $10 (CDN).

Have you looked at Sheryl Stahl's article in the latest (online) issue of 
Judaica Librarianship? It has a 10-page bibliogeaphy of reccommended 
acquisitions at the end, divided by library type (including synagogue).

At the bottom of the bibliography, there are 2 sections : Children's Fiction 
and Children's Non-Fiction.

Some are more appropriate for Grade 2 than others, but it's a short list to 
cull from.

In 2006, drawing on her mother’s memories of the Holocaust, Katin published “We 
Are on Our Own,” a graphic novel inspired by Art Spiegelman’s “Maus.”Katin 
trained as a graphic artist in Israel and is the recipient of the Inkpot Award 
and the Prix de la critique. Her work has been featured in the 2007 and 2014 
volumes of “The Best American Comics.” She will be introduced by Elizabeth 
Pollard, a historian and founding member of the Comics Studies Collaborative at 
San Diego State University (SDSU). Pamela Jackson, the popular culture 
librarian in charge of the Comic Arts archive at SDSU, will provide concluding

from https://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/defence-watch/library-association-pulls-award-for-rmc-professors-bookDavid Pugliese  •  Ottawa CitizenThe largest library association in the world has pulled an award for a book co-edited by a Royal Military College professor over concerns it whitewashes Nazi collaborators and war criminals.In late January, the American Library Association honoured the book, Enemy Archives, edited by Royal Military College professor Lubomyr Luciuk and Ukrainian historian Volodymyr Viatrovych, on its list of the best historical materials for 2022 and 2023.But the book has been criticized by a Jewish organization and Holocaust scholars who have raised concerns it whitewashes Nazi collaborators in Ukraine during the Second World War.The association has now retracted the award and is investigating how the book came to be honoured in the first place.“We apologize for the harm caused by the work’s initial inclusion on the list,” Jean Hodges, director of communications for the library association, said in a statement.“The committee will be reviewing the award manual and procedures,” she added.Luciuk, in an email to this newspaper, noted the library association’s decision was “perplexing” and added that journalists should read the book lest they “misrepresent” it.Viatrovych did not respond to requests for comment.The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, which promotes Holocaust education, welcomed the decision by the American Library Association.“It is very disappointing to see that some are willing to use this moment of great public support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression as an opportunity to re-write Ukrainian history, and specifically to whitewash the involvement of Ukrainian nationals in the commission of genocide against Ukrainian Jewry,” said Jaime Kirzner-Roberts, senior director for policy and advocacy at the center. “This book got a platform it never deserved given the outright misinformation it contains, and we are glad to see this problem being rectified as institutions take a closer look at the book and its dangerous and outrageous claims.”Enemy Archives: Soviet Counterinsurgency Operations and the Ukrainian Nationalist Movement – Selections from the Secret Police Archives discusses the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists as well as the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Some Ukrainians see those who belonged to those organizations as heroes who fought against the Soviets.Some Holocaust scholars, Jewish organizations, and the Polish government have labelled those individuals as Nazi collaborators who were involved in the murders of up to 100,000 Poles and Jews.The National Post published an excerpt from Enemy Archives on Feb. 9, 2023, prompting criticism from the news agency, the Jewish News Syndicate, as well as the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center.Rob Roberts, editor-in-chief of the National Post, told the Jewish News Syndicate at the time that “the excerpt included a paragraph disputing the view that the Second World War era Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were Nazi collaborators. However, we recognize that this collaboration has been established by prior scholarship.”Luciuk told JNS that “the so-called ‘Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’ should read the book. I appreciate getting to read the long version. The short version would have had 
me wondering what I missed.

There are so many notable names, institutions, accomplishments listed. Quite 
impressive!

I didn’t realize you worked with Sandy Berman. I never met him, but I used to 
get all sorts of cool reading materials from him when I was just an aspiring 
grad student at UWO. Among other things, he gave me wonderful leads which I 
used for my “Libraries in Comics” & “Jews in Comics” bibliographies.

I’m sure I speak for many bored librarians who can only imagine what the 
Chicago conference would have been like. At least you have use a taste of what 
the Goldstein Merit Award presentation might have sounded like.
