This morning a water main in our building burst, flooding the carpeted library
and other spaces. Fortunately, the building was occupied and I was in the
library so the flooding was caught immediately. However, it took some time to
find and shut off the main. Consequently there were several inches of water
absorbed by the carpet and standing on the floor. From what I could se, the
water did not come up to book level.

They have begun extracting water and have set up heavy duty dehumidifiers.
Walls will have to be opened and replaced to prevent mold and the carpeting
will have to be pulled up. Of course, all the bookcases will have to be
detached from walls, emptied and books boxed. The restoration company that was
called in said that all the ( custom made to fit the space, oak) bookcases and
other furniture (tables, chairs)would need to be trashed.

Having gone through something similar to this about 12 years ago, I question
this opinion.

What have other people's experiences been with using wooden bookcases that have
stood in water for a day or two?

All I can see are $$$$$ which we don't have for similar quality replacement.

Any suggestions for vendors for replacements if we have to? The company we
originally dealt with doesn't seem to be around anymore.
