[ha-Safran] Fw: help with book choice

2014-01-03 Thread Rose Myers
Dear June,

I asked my friendly local public librarian who runs book groups
and she said:

The California part is the stumper here. Will keep thinking    My
Father's Paradise is what initially came to mind...

and then

Offer her Dara Horn's A Guide for the Perplexed

I hope this helps.

substituting the Goodman book with two others if I needed them both

Re: [ha-Safran] Fw: help with book choice

2014-01-19 Thread June Cummins

Hello, everyone!

First, a big thank you to all of you who sent me
suggestions. I checked out every single one of them. I
intended to get back to each of you personally, but I can
see that may not happen. Please accept this group thank
you. I really appreciate how much all of you helped me.

I ended up picking the book Sheryl Stahl recommended. I
read it on Friday and decided it was perfect. She sent the
recommendation just in the nick of time--now I can put in
the order before class starts on Thursday, and I can include
the title in my syllabus.

In the meantime, I found out from the book order person at
my university that Allegra Goodman's /Family Moskovitz/ is
out of print. I was very surprised to hear that. I've used
that book several times in my Jewish-American Lit. class and
know others have used it, too. Do any of you know anything
about that book being out of print and whether it will be
reprinted again?

Finally, if any of you live in San Diego or Orange County
and are interested, I'll be giving a public lecture in early
February, called "Lifting the Lamp: The Hidden Jewish Women
Behind American Identity." I'll be at the Carlsbad Library
on February 3 at 7:00 pm and again at the Coronado Library
on February 5 at 10:00 am.

Thanks again to all of you. You're a terrific community.

Take care,
June
