Hilarious! It reminds me of how books were often classified before Dewey, by
size.

[ha-Safran] FW: Synagogue Librarian Wages

2017-10-27 Thread Amy Turim
I agree with Rachel on this. As a synagogue librarian I negotiated my salary
based on a wide swath of municipal librarians’ wages, because so many of the
synagogue librarians are still volunteers. In addition, religious school
teacher salaries often vary widely based on education and length of service.

It can come down to how much your particular institution truly values your
contribution, and the more support you can gather from your constituency, the
stronger your position. At the start of every year I send a short email to the
Temple Board with a list of books in our collection that may be useful and
interesting to them (INSPIRED JEWISH LEADERSHIP, MORE THAN MANAGING; The
Relentless Pursuit of Effective Jewish Leadership, et al.), our Rabbi happens
to be a great reader, and I really try to make the library a presence in the
synagogue.

I would also recommend investigating the salaries of similarly credentials
librarians in your local public library and school library system.

I have always used these numbers to negotiate my salary.

I agree that the easiest thing to use as comparison is the salaries for
teachers--use the teachers of religious school if you don’t have a day school.
The librarian should be considered a staff educator in the same way and the
salaries per hour should be equal unless they authorize higher salaries for
specific teaching degrees, etc.

Look at the salaries of teachers in the school. The librarian should have an
equivalent salary. For example: if a full-time teacher earns $60,000 a year,
the librarian salary should be at least $30 / hour. It is better to have a
yearly salary than an hourly rate.

I am so lucky to have the opportunity to be hired for the position for which I
had been volunteering! The board is asking for a number and I want to give them
some comparable wages.

Thanks so much for your help!

who would be prepared to present.
If you are interested, please notify Joyce and cc me.

[ha-Safran] FW: Video Librarian review of AUF WIEDERSEHEN - TILL WE MEET AGAIN

2012-02-20 Thread Ruth Diskin

AUF WIEDERSEHEN-TILL WE MEET AGAIN by Linda Mills

 Brian Dilg

The melding of two monumental and tragic events is at the heart of this
moving personal documentary. In the recent Video Librarian review, P. Hall
wrote: A personal history of how the Holocaust reshaped one family's
existence. On 9/11, filmmaker Linda G. Mills's son, Ronnie, who was
attending public school in lower Manhattan, witnessed the destruction of the
World Trade Center. Five years later Mills decided to link Ronnie's
experience with the forced exile of her Jewish mother, Annie, from Vienna in
1939.

Highly recommended for your library patrons, AUF WIEDERSEHEN-TILL WE MEET
AGAIN is a personal journey with a collective message.

The film is available to purchase for university libraries for $300 +
shipping and handling and $115 + shipping and handling for public libraries.
