[ha-Safran] seeking book suggestions

2012-06-25 Thread Witty, Emily
Dear Safranim,

I am hopeful you can help me. Is there a booklist with book suggestions
for students in grade 1-6 on the topic of diversity (immigrants,
minorities) as well as disabilities. I am looking for books that have
main characters who are ethnically and/or religiously diverse and or
have a disability. I have the Invisible Inc. Series which has a main
character who is Deaf (and another one who is invisible). Books can be
both fiction and non-fiction; even poetry is welcome.

The following are books I know of from my own experience, but any
suggestions would be most welcome.

Adler, D. A. (1993). A Picture Book of Frederick Douglass

Bunting, E. (1989). The Wednesday Surprise. New York: Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt.

Friedman, I.R. (1984) How My Parents Learned to Eat. New York: Houghton

[ha-Safran] Seeking Book Recommendation

2013-07-01 Thread Deborah Stern
Hello dear colleagues. One of our rabbinical students is looking for a
book recommendation. Here's what she seeks:

"I'm looking for a book to read along with my private bar mitzvah
student about a Jewish story, someone who is Jewish, that deals with the
environment.

He is interested in leadership, and environment. I specifically do not
want a Holocaust book. But it should be a teen book or appropriate for
the 6-8th grade age range."

Please send me any suggestions you have. Thanks so much!

Dear Emily,

I would like to call your attention to our Juvenile and Young Adult

Dear Emily,

Kar-Ben's immigration stories including Sydney Taylor award winners "Mendel's
Accordion" and Feivel's Flying Horses" (there's a wonderful curriculum guide to
this one pu out by the Smithsinian!) would be good candidates for this, as
would Carolivia Herron's "Always an Olivia." Our books with special eneds
themes "Nathan Blows out the Hanukkah Candles" dealing with autism and the new
"Jeremy's Dreidel" (fall 2012) dealing with blindness, would also be good for
your programs.

One of my favourite graphic novels of all time is Will Eisner's Dropsie Avenue
: The Neighbourhood (reprinted in The Contract with God Trilogy).

The stories show how the neighbourhood changes and evolves from one generation
to the next.

Which ethnicities make up the narrative? Dutch, English, Irish, Jews (religious
and assimilated), Italian Catholics, African Americans, Puerto Ricans. One of
the important characters is a disabled girl in a wheelchair who - towards the
end - helps the neighbourhood thrive again after years of neglect.

sells the e-book version, now, and we've done an exhaustive search of used

If you have a copy you'd be willing to sell, please let me know.

[ha-Safran] Seeking book discussion question and activities

2013-10-06 Thread tgerson

Hello Safranim/not:

I am going to be leading a parent/child book discussion for Carolivia Herron's
book, Always An Olivia. I have had no luck finding anything on the web. Have
any of you ever led such a discussion. I will be using some felt board cutouts
to tell the story and then to ask the questions. Any help will be so much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance

[ha-Safran] Seeking Book on Rabbi Sasportas in French

2019-10-16 Thread Jacqueline Benefraim via Hasafran
Shalom,

Below is another inquiry I received during the hag.

Mo'adim le-Simha,

Jackie

Comment/question posted from Association of Jewish Libraries site:

Name: SASPORTAS - Elbaz Georgia

Email: georgias...@gmail.com

Phone: 0033607503172

Comment: Hello. My name is Georgia Sasportas. I am very interested in the
book of Yaacob Dweck on the dissident Rabbi Sasportas of which I am a
descendant. I do not speak English, and I would like to know if I can buy
this book translated into French. I also researched Yaacob Sasportas and
family from Spain to Amsterdam. Thank you and thank you to Mr Dweck for
writing this book.

[ha-Safran] Seeking book similar to The Jake Show

2024-03-06 Thread Wendie Sittenfield via Hasafran
Hello Safranim Maximum,

I am about to read *The Jake Show*.

Is there a similar title either in graphic format or a chapter book?

It is for an 11 year old girl of divorced parents, one of whom is a Bala
Tshuva.

The girl spends alternate weekends and holidays being secular and Shomer
Shabbat.

Also, does anyone know if The Jake Show will be a PJ Our Way selection?

Many thanks in advance for your help.
