Re: [ha-Safran] To be posted, please

2021-01-07 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
I would recommend the following:
Florence Adler Learns to Swim by Rachel Beanland
The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson
The Hours Count by Jillian Cantor
The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas
On Division by Goldie Goldbloom
The Third Daughter by Talia Carner
The Two-Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman
Windy City Blues by Renee Rosen

These were all well received by my book groups and I think they are especially
accessible reads and would appeal to a wide audience. Many of these authors
would likely be willing to “zoom” with your group for a short Q after your
discussion which really adds to the meeting and generates larger participation
(in my experience).

I also recommend that you choose a book that is easily available from your
public library system and is available as an eBook and audio-book. Large print
is super helpful too.

Good luck!

I am working with a local Jewish assisted living & nursing home facility to
develop a book club for residents (and possibly their families).
We'd like to start with a light, easy to read book with Jewish content but one
that will be accessible to non-Jewish residents also.

I love suggestions of books that would meet that criteria.

Marcia, it's an older book, but a wonderful book club book: The Jew Store
by Stella Suberman - a memoir of her observant (in part) family who moves
to Memphis, where they are the only Jews. Easy to read, lots to discuss.

2021-01-06 Thread Eva Schweitzer via Hasafran
If I may; we are distributing the English version of "Rheinsberg", by Kurt
Tucholsky. The author is Jewish, as is the main character, "Claire," but it is
basically a rebellious, yet light-hearted love story for everybody. It was a
big success when it first came out in Germany. The book has only 96 pages,
including many pictures, a preface, and a biography.
