...most of the magazines are archived online.

Look at the covers of the magazines. If one or two of them look
particularly cute, rip them off and have them permaplact to
decorate/lhang on the wall which will bring everyone's attention that
the magazines still exist but in a different glitzier format. You could
make a wall display of the best front covers of 9-10 magazines: Your
library! Keeping up with the times! Good literature now on the
Internet or something like that.

Next, toss all the rest of the whole magazine kit-n-kaboodle into a
Free-Bee Bin with an invitation to whomever likes, to take home
howevermuch they like, of whatsoever strikes their fancy. After about a
month invite everybody to riffle through what's left and to RIP OUT out
articles that are of particular interest. At the end of another month,
buy a hamster or some guinea piggies for the library. Tear the magazines
that are left up into strips and you'll have several months of fluffy,
curly paper for the hamster to run around in.

2012-08-29 Thread Maria Markovic

Hi Rita:

Unfortunately the days of paper-based magazines are over. Considering the
currency (not necessarily the accuracy) of information we seek, it's
understandable. Nonetheless, not all books and magazines on paper will
disappear completely. Some may make their way to archives or museums, others to
special collections - space permitting. And the rest of them will meet their
end like the books in my Books board on Pinterest:
http://pinterest.com/terimm53/books.

Best wishes, Terezia Matus

[ha-Safran] What to do with old magazines?

2012-08-28 Thread Rita Dahlke
Hi,

I just took over managing the Temple Library where I found a collection of
periodicals some dating back to the early 1990's. I did some investigating and
found that most of the magazines are archived online. Is there any reason why I
need to store all of these magazines? We really do not have room for all of
them? Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Rita,
Every synagogue librarian struggles with this question.. If the periodicals
are not in a searchable format they have little value. I used to keep back
issues for a year.

There is no real reason to keep them unless you’re building a research
collection.

Before you toss them, see if Zubal wants them.
http://www.zubalbooks.com/sell.jsp

They buy used periodicals.
