[ha-Safran] Article on Zilvinas from the JTA Life Stories today

2024-08-07 Thread Gail Shirazi via Hasafran
Came across this article this morning. He is missed by many. Such a special
person. Gail

The Vilnius Jewish Public Library was established by the Lithuanian
Ministry of Culture in 2011 at the impetus of Wyman Brent, a California
book collector who is neither Jewish nor speaks Lithuanian. In order to
achieve its goal of demonstrating the breadth and depth of Jewish life and
culture, the library would need a stellar director. The library found the
ideal candidate in *Žilvinas Beliauskas*, who had a master’s degree in
psychology from Vilnius University and had done postgraduate studies in its
Department of History of Philosophy and Logic. Perhaps more importantly, he
shared Brent’s commitment to remembering the cultural contributions of a
community of Jews whose storied history ended with the Holocaust. “Not
Jewish himself, he devoted an enormous amount of energy to educating fellow
Lithuanians about Lithuanian Jewish history and heritage,” the Jewish
Community Library in San Francisco remembered in a Facebook tribute.
Beliauskas, who also directed the Vilnius Jewish Theater, died July 26
.
He was 66.

Re: [ha-Safran] Article on The new world

2023-07-14 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Amalia,

I'm glad I was able to be of some assistance. Yes, Esther Kreitman's story
is a very sad one. It is unfortunately true, and was especially so in her
day, that women authors weren't given the respect they deserved or taken
seriously, as for example, her two younger brothers were. I can only
imagine what great treasures were lost when, as the story goes, in
obedience to her mother, Kreitman tore up and threw out the window of a
train the hundreds of pages of work she had written from childhood on while
on her way to an arranged marriage to a diamond cutter in Antwerp. We were
fortunate that she continued to write and produce such great novels as
*Brilyantn *about the diamond trade in Antwerp and London before, during,
and after WWI. Who knows, however, how much more she could have
contributed to Yiddish and world literature had she been encouraged and
supported, especially in her youth?

Thanks for your question.

*Kol-tuv,*
Elliot

[ha-Safran] Article request

2017-02-01 Thread Feiga Weiss
Hello, Yossi,
Would it be possible to get a copy/scan of an article by Yehuda Bauer? It is
"Whose Holocaust" and appeared in Midstream Magazine, #26, November 1980 pp.
42-46.
Would you please ask members of the List-serve to see if they have this in
their collection and whether I might get a copy?
Thank you.

Dear Safranim,

I am looking for an article from Newsweek of July 24, 1978. The title of the
article is The Moscow Trial. I tried Proquest, but the date is too early and
they don't index it. If anyone is able to get the article for me it would be
appreciated.

[ha-Safran] Article in JUDAISM magazine decades ago on length of year

2013-11-04 Thread Donald Weinshank
This is going to be a hard question.

Decades ago, there was an article in JUDAISM Magazine which argued that the
Biblical idea of time changed early on in b'reshit. At first, a "year" was the
time which spanned one dry season and one rainy season. For this reasons, the
life spans of Jews up to that point were twice what we would expect today.
Start with parashah Chayye Sarah Gen 23:1

At some point, this switched to a quasi-solar year.

The problem is that we no longer have that subscription. Ran out of space and
donated that and hundreds of books to a small college in Kentucky.

I therefore have neither title nor author. All searches I could dream up have
failed.

Can you help?

[ha-Safran] Article on mentoring: "The Road Map to a Symbiotic Mentor-Mentee Relationship" by Arnie Fertig

2013-08-06 Thread Stephanie L Gross
The Road Map to a Symbiotic Mentor-Mentee Relationship

By Arnie Fertig
August 6, 2013

Do you remember the last time you bought something that needed to be assembled
at home? Some of us have an innate knack for looking at all the parts that come
in the package and figuring out how they all fit together. Others of us are
adept at following the instructions, and for many more even, the instructions
fail to provide the sought-after clarity of direction. We crave the personal
attention that will walk us step-by-step through the construction
process.

So too it is with our careers. Some people know at an early age what they want
to do with their lives and go about doing it with little direction. The vast
majority of us, however, at one point or another wish that our professional
career path would come with an easy-to-read-and-follow map that guides us from
our first job all the way to retirement.

While that singular map doesn't exist, numerous sources of support and insight
are available in the forms of books, articles, counselors and coaches.

Paul Krieg, a business experience manager at Northern Kentucky University,
argues that mentoring is key to long-term success. He advises that "mentors can
provide you with the 'big picture,' yet put you in control of deciding the best
course of action for yourself." Read

Shalom.

A patron is looking for an article from the March 29, 2013 edition of

Would anyone happen to know where the article might be available for him?
he has already done extensive searches online. I am copying the patron on
this message. Thank you in advance for any help you can lend. Please

[ha-Safran] article on the library's "brand" - books

2013-03-15 Thread Heidi Estrin
Very interesting article about how books are the library's "brand" - and if
physical books get replaced by e-books, then what's our brand?

Here's the most important part of the article:

"I believe the purpose of the library transcends physical formats. In practice,
in our rapidly changing world, our purpose must transcend any format that
information comes in. For a moment, consider the (terrible, horrible)
possibility that libraries are not able to get physical books like we have in
the past, and that the majority of adult titles shift to digital. What if we
still only have less than a handful of imperfect choices to lease and loan to
patrons. Are we still a library?

It's time to examine our missions in this new world of content. Books are our
current brand, but in a world that is shifting to electronic forms, and to
fulfill our public good role, our brand needs to change. I would love our brand
to be "access to the resources and tools in an ever-changing world." That means
access to e-everything, including the tools and training needed for content
creation, and in physical spaces. Places to gather and discuss ideas. Places to
learn, and places to teach."
Read the whole thing at
http://publiclibrariesonline.org/2012/10/if-books-are-our-brand/

Re: [ha-Safran] Article on synagogue libraries in Northern New Jersey

2012-04-16 Thread chapters
Larry,
Thanks for sharing this article with us. It can make every AJL member proud.
Kathe Pinchuck is quoted saying noted that “Where even smaller
congregations once had Hebrew schools for their own members — and libraries to
serve those children — “Now there are more community schools and the group [the
synagogue] serviced isn’t there.”
Is it common in other communities ?
I thought that, due to the current economic situation, the number of students
attending day schools is much smaller than in the past. Synagogue libraries
devote most of their time to the Hebrew school. The children book collection is
extensive as is the teachers resources therefor I feel that the person who
serves the library should have a strong Judaic knowledge.

[ha-Safran] Article about Holocaust denial literature in the Journal of Academic Librarianship

2012-01-26 Thread Rachel Leket-Mor
Shalom all,

A review of Holocaust denial literature titles in member libraries of the
Association of Research Libraries has been published recently in the Journal of
Academic Librarianship by Debra F. Spidal, Washington State University. The
detailed review (including 9 tables) calls for catalogers' judgment when
cataloging these materials.

Treatment of Holocaust Denial Literature in Association of Research Libraries.
The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Volume 38, Issue 1, Pages 26-32.

Thanks,
Rachel
