Some things I’ve done in the past for 3rd-5th grade and older:
· Compare the story of “The Samovar” in Days of Awe: Stories for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur by Eric Kimmel to the newer picture book Gabriel’s Horn
also by Eric Kimmel. I usually read “The Samovar” but play the ebook of
Gabriel’s Horn on the SmartBoard. I’m also lucky to have access to an antique
samovar and a French horn that I show to the students.
· Read and discuss Gershon’s Monster by Eric Kimmel specifically
focusing on the 6 steps of t'shuvah that he outlines in his author’s note.
· For a lesson on creation, I read (or break the students up into
groups to each read) several different versions of the creation story including
Creation by McDermott, Big Momma Makes the World by Root and Mr. And Mrs. God
in the Creation Kitchen by Wood along with the text from the Torah (I like to
use In the Beginning : Bereishit adapted by Alison Greengard). We discuss what
midrash is and how these other versions do and don’t stay true to the original
text.
· Around Sukkot, read the book Molly’s Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen and
watch the movie from 1985. Compare and contrast. I also like to revisit Molly
with the sequel, Make a Wish Molly (also available on DVD) at Passover time.
· Other favorite holiday stories to share with older students are:
Yussel’s Prayer by Barbara Cohen, The white ram: a story of Abraham and Isaac
by Mordicai Gerstein, The Mysterious Guests by Eric Kimmel, and When the
chickens went on strike: A Rosh Hashanah tale by Erica Silverman.
But, I’ve been doing some of these lessons for 20+ years so I would also love
some new ideas!

Subject: [ha-Safran] first week/Rosh Hashana ideas
I'm looking for fun ideas to use in the first two weeks of school, possibly
connected with but not limited to the Chagim, for grades 3-5. Thank you. Susan
