[ha-Safran] retirement farewell

2024-02-22 Thread Rabbi Alan Lapayover via Hasafran
Dear Safranim/Colleagues,

I know I haven't been present very much lately, but I wanted to announce my
retirement as director of the library at the Reconstruction Rabbinical College.
Tomorrow is my last day and I want to say farewell and tell you that I have
enjoyed being a part of AJL and all that you do. I have learned a lot and,
having met many of you at past conferences, can say that I appreciated your
collegiality and friendship. I wish you all the best for the future.
L'hitra'ot and l'shalom.

Wishing you all the best, and I hope we'll still see you (maybe at some
zoom events?).

With very best wishes,

[ha-Safran] Retirement announcement

2018-04-26 Thread Kiron, Arthur
Please post:

Dear colleagues and friends of Judith Leifer,

I am writing to let you know that Judith Leifer, one of our most treasured
staff members at the Penn Libraries, has announced her retirement at the end of
June after thirty years of lservice. We are planning a farewell party in her
honor, featuring food, drink and good cheer.

This celebration of her career will be held on Tuesday afternoon, May 15,
2018 from 3-5 pm at the Class of '78 Pavilion in the Kislak Center in the Van
Pelt-Dietrich Library Center.

Judith is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. Her life story
is truly extraordinary. She is a survivor of Nazi persecution, who escaped her
native Bratislava to British Palestine via Budapest, Turkey and Lebanon. Her
life in Israel, London, and the U.S., and her work at the Penn Libraries has
been no less historic. It is difficult to convey the scope and depth of her
contributions to our library and to the service of scholarship.

Judith came to the the Annenberg Research Institute, today the Katz Center,
exactly thirty years ago, in 1988. She has provided circulation, ILL,
bibliographical, and research services to Katz Fellows, faculty, students
alike. She has searched hundreds of thousands of books along the way, playing
a critical role helping us develop intellectual control over the Dropsie
College library collection. A generation of scholars have thanked her in their
publications, celebrated her assistance in letters and messages sent to me, and
otherwise praised her for her total dedication to the cause of learning.
I hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday, May 15th from 3-5 pm at the
Class of '78 Pavilion at Penn. It will be an opportunity to learn more about
Judith, her exceptional life, and the contributions she has made. It will also
give us all a chance to wish her well as she officially steps down from her
library duties and begins the next chapter of her life.

  With thanks,

   Arthur

[ha-Safran] Retirement Announcement: Marlene Gitelman

2017-03-04 Thread Elliot Gertel
After nearly seventeen years as Judaica Cataloger specializing in Hebrew
and Yiddish, a highly dedicated member of the University of Michigan
Graduate Library’s staff, Marlene Gitelman, recently retired.

One could have asked for no better colleague. We have worked together so
smoothly in a tiny Judaica unit with our large collection over the years,
and Marlene has made it so pleasant for us to work on tackling the many
challenges that have arisen. From the abundant gifts we received over the
years to accessing Special Collections materials including books, artwork,
and realia and rare book cataloging, Marlene’s superb work in building our
Judaica collections and helping maintain them as some of the best in the
country has been of inestimable value. She faced every test with
enthusiasm, including numerous institutional reorganizations, cataloging a
very large collection of Haggadahs, and research work uncovering detailed
background data on titles, authors, artists, etc. for rare antiquarian
Hebraica—including books missing both the title page and colophon.

Before joining our staff, Marlene was for eighteen years the principal of
the Hebrew Day School in Ann Arbor, a school she helped found.

We will miss her calm and cheerful disposition, along with her smile, and
wish her the very best in the years to come. If I know Marlene, she will be
even more active than ever! We treasured her time here, and will sorely
miss her! I look forward to hearing about all her future endeavors.

*Be-hatslaḥah u-ve-brakhah! Rav todot/a hartsikn dank *for a job very well
done, Marlene!

[ha-Safran] Retirement

2015-07-01 Thread Basya Karp
After nearly 24 years at Shulamith, the time has come for me to retire. Several
factors came into play, the most important one being the upcoming relocation of
the school to a new space. The temporary location, smaller than the building
that Shulamith has called home for so many years, does not have space for a
library. So, with a heavy heart and concern for the future of a school without
a library, I made the decision to leave.
I will (and already do) miss the interaction with students and faculty, the
class sessions in which I introduced children to quality books, literary
genres, library skills, and more, the special events and programs, the
discovery of new and notable reading material, and the opportunities to share
these acquisitions with kids and teachers.
As this chapter (my assistant referred to it as a whole book!) comes to a
close, it is time to look ahead. I'll be exploring new possibilities, either
making use of my experience at Shulamith and elsewhere or branching out in a
completely different direction. I'm already dabbling with freelance writing and
editing--and, of course, I'll continue to write book reviews to share literary
treasures with readers of all ages.
Thank you, fellow librarians, for the camaraderie we've enjoyed over the years,
and Hasafran, for the opportunity to interact with others and learn from the
members' collective wisdom.
Shalom.
