[ha-Safran] What is this ALA Resolution?

The resolutions were then considered by council during our meeting on Sunday, 
June 23.

Resolution in Defense of the Free Speech of Supporters of the Movement for 
Palestinian Rights, which read:

“Resolved, that the American Library Association, on behalf of its members
1. opposes the Combating of BDS Act of 2019 contained in S.1 and H.R. 336;
2. opposes S.852, the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act of 2019; and
3. opposes any federal, state, or local legislation that would restrict the 
First Amendment rights of supporters of the movement for Palestinian rights, 
including activists and supporters of the BDS movement.”

Council voted to refer the resolution to the committee on Legislation, 
Intellectual Freedom committee, and International Relations committee with a 
report due at Midwinter 2020. Council wants the committees to consider intended 
and unintended consequences in how we coalition with other organizations on the 
hill. A member of the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) will also be 
working with the three committees.

 that was eventually withdrawn from consideration, that called for the ALA 
Divestment from Caterpillar, Hewlett-Packard, and Motorola Solutions, because 
of those companies involvement with Israel (click the link.)

The mover is from the Social Responsibilities Round Table (the mover is a
well-known anti-Israel SRRT activist).

Here's what happened at Council:
  VOTED, to refer ALA CD#49, Resolution in Defense of the Free Speech of
Supporters of the Movement for Palestinian Rights to the Committee on
Legislation, Committee on Intellectual Freedom & International Relations
Committee, which will report to Council at ALA Midwinter Meeting 2020.

I guess it's coming back to Council this coming Midwinter.  I am no longer
on Council and haven't attended ALA in a while, due to my husband's
illness/death, so I don't know anything about what happened or what to
expect in January.

However, I am running for ALA Council this year.  Though it is not in my
personal statement (obviously), my main mission is to keep these
anti-Israel resolutions from passing Council.  If you are an ALA member, I
hope you will vote for me.
