It seems fixed now. I have not seen this before, maybe someone else
has: Under some circumstances there will be locks remaining for older
versions of a file. In that case the mess that we have seen results.

P.S. it's a pain to debug things like that, checking config files etc
through a link approaching the speed of a 300baud acoustic coupler...
