I started the quantitative research group, and I knew OCaml very well, 
and didn't know Haskell except by reputation.  As to the merits, it is

 shell scripts, etc.  We use a beowulf cluster for compute-intensive
 jobs, so experience programming for and administering clusters is a
 big plus.
