Then how about call it AbstractByteBufferErasureCoder or
AbstractByteErasureCoder? It seems not clear that Raw means byte. And the
ErasureCoder class you mentioned should call BlockGroupErasureCoder.

 Raw Erasure Coder API for concrete encoding and decoding

 Key: HDFS-7353

 Project: Hadoop HDFS
  Issue Type: Sub-task
Reporter: Kai Zheng
Assignee: Kai Zheng
 Fix For: HDFS-EC

 Attachments: HDFS-7353-v1.patch

 This is to abstract and define raw erasure coder API across different codes
 algorithms like RS, XOR and etc. Such API can be implemented by utilizing
 various library support, such as Intel ISA library and Jerasure library.

 Currently hdfs-nfs logs does not have any information about nfs clients.
 When multiple clients are using nfs, it becomes hard to distinguish which

[~wheat9] Thank you for reviewing it.

By {{IN || parent_id || localName}}, do you mean concating {{inode}},  {{parent
inode}} and INode {{localName}} as key in LevelDB? In this case, since INode is
the prefix of the key, is the order of keys still determined by inode?

 Currently the {{.reserved}} patch check function is:
 {code}
 public static boolean isReservedName(String src) {
   return src.startsWith(DOT_RESERVED_PATH_PREFIX);
 }
 {code}
 And {{DOT_RESERVED_PATH_PREFIX}} is {{/.reserved}}, it should be
 {{/.reserved/}}, for example: if some other directory prefix with
 _/.reserved_, we say it's _/.reservedpath_, then the check is wrong.

---

  Administrator or owner of the directory can change immutability of directory
  to off to make it a regular directory.

If immutability can be turned off, is it still satisfied the regulatory
compliance requirement?

 Looks like the first type of immutability is similar to setting read-only
 {{r-\-r-\-r--}} permission on a directory recursively? ...

I guess you probably mean r-xr-xr-x. Otherwise, file read is not allowed. For
r-xr-xr-x directories, append to a file is allowed.

 Many regulatory compliance requires storage to support WORM functionality to

 adding that feature to HDFS.

Hi [~szetszwo],

Thanks for your review. Why it would have Raw for the erasure coder classes,
as the JIRA's title indicates, it's because they're for encoding/decoding in
lowest bytes level. As you might help take a look at the codec JIRA (HDFS-7337)
and the bundle of prototype codes attached there, we do have ErasureCoder
classes, which perform encoding/decoding against BlockGroup. Generally an
ErasureCoder needed by an ErasureCodec can use one or more RawErasureCoders to
do the real work. I'm working on the breakdown and this patch is the first one.
I will address your comments updating the patch. Please let me know if you have
more questions.

The current patch stores the map from {{inodeid}} to {{parent}} in LevelDB in
the first pass, then in the second pass it iterates all inodes in the fsimage
then prints out the results.

However, given the fact that (1) LevelDB stores the KV pair in sorted order on
the disk, and (2) the inodes are stored in random orders in the fsimage, the
scheme requires one seek per file. It makes more sense to adopt the scheme
demonstrated in HDFS-6293, that is, using {{IN || parent_id || localName}} as
the key. That way it requires at most one seek per directory instead of one
seek per file.

should print out the path when creating an IllegalArgumentException.

FSDirConcatOp.concat? Otherwise, it will compute the srcs string even if debug

- Unintentional format change in PBHelper.convertEditsResponse(..)? There is a
long line.
- Let's also chanage WebHDFS to support append to new block. We may do it

 We'd better to use {{dir.getAuditFileInfo}}, since it's only for audit log.
 If audit log is not on, we don't need to get the file info.
 *3.*
 In {{truncateInternal}},
 {code}
 INodeFile file = iip.getLastINode().asFile();
 {code}
 is not necessary.

Yi Liu commented on HDFS-3107:

I have done some functionality tests in my cluster, and do some code review
from my point of view (I'm not very good at snapshot part, so just did some
basic review for that part :)).

+1 (non-binding) for merging into branch-2, it's good to me, except some small
nits, and I filed them in HDFS-7634 and HDFS-7638. Certainly we can file follow
ups if I find some new issues.

  Remaining Estimate: 1,344h

 Systems with transaction support often need to undo changes made to the
 underlying storage when a transaction is aborted. Currently HDFS does not
 support truncate (a standard Posix operation) which is a reverse operation of
 append, which makes upper layer applications use ugly workarounds (such as
 keeping track of the discarded byte range per file in a separate metadata
 store, and periodically running a vacuum process to rewrite compacted files)
 to overcome this limitation of HDFS.

 Currently the {{.reserved}} patch check function is:
 {code}
 public static boolean isReservedName(String src) {
   return src.startsWith(DOT_RESERVED_PATH_PREFIX);
 }
 {code}
 And {{DOT_RESERVED_PATH_PREFIX}} is {{/.reserved}}, it should be
 {{/.reserved/}}, for example: if some other directory prefix with
 _/.reserved_, we say it's _/.reservedpath_, then the check is wrong.

Lei (Eddy) Xu commented on HDFS-6727:

Great question, [~jiangyu1211].

Our original design was relying on DataNode's own timeout to do the
blockreport, mostly for the simplicity reason. You can use {{hdfs dfsadmin
-triggerBlockReport}} to trigger block report if necessary. If there is a
strong desire to always send blockreport after swapping a drive, I'd add it in
a followup JIRA.

bq. obvious you have data in it.

We were actually thinking about removing bad disks and adding larger empty
disks as major cases. As mentioned above, if adding a loaded disk is a very
common task, I'd love to file another JIRA to let DN send block report right
after how swap job finishes.

 HDFS-1362 requires DataNode to reload configuration file during the runtime,
 so that DN can change the data volumes dynamically. This JIRA reuses the
 reconfiguration framework introduced by HADOOP-7001 to enable DN to
 reconfigure at runtime.

Thanks Jing for updating the patch. Sorry for late review.

The patch itself is pretty good to me, I have few questions:
*1).* About the compatibility, original storage policies are pre-defined and
hardcode, but now we let admin to overwrite/remove, then how to handle the
block storage policies for old files.
*2).* Even for new files, if admin changes the storage policies. Then user
needs to utilize the {{mover}} (the new data migration tool)?

My initial comments are as following, seems we need to rebase the patch again:
*1.* We should disallow the operations if the storage policy feature is not
enabled.
*2.* Do we need to supply dfs admin command line for this feature?

 Persist Block Storage Policy in FSImage and Edit Log

 Currently block storage policies are hard coded. This JIRA is to persist the
 policies in FSImage and Edit Log in order to support adding new policies or
 modifying existing policies.

 Similar with {{append}}, lazy persist (memory) file should not support
 truncate currently. Quote the reason from HDFS-6581 design doc:
 {quote}
 Appends to files created with the LAZY_PERSISTflag will not be allowed in the
 initial implementation to avoid the complexity of keeping inmemory and
 ondisk replicas in sync on a given DataNode.

 This sub-task addresses section 4.1 of the document attached to HDFS-5194,
 the exposure of interfaces needed by a FsDatasetSpi implementation.
 Specifically it makes ChunkChecksum public and BlockMetadataHeader's
 readHeader() and writeHeader() methods public.
 The changes to BlockReaderUtil (and related classes) discussed by section
 4.1 are only needed if supporting short-circuit, and should be addressed
 as part of an effort to provide such support rather than this JIRA.
 To help ensure these changes are complete and are not regressed in the
 future, tests that gauge the accessibility (though *not* behavior)
 of interfaces needed by a FsDatasetSpi subclass are also included.
 These take the form of a dummy FsDatasetSpi subclass -- a successful
 compilation is effectively a pass. Trivial unit tests are included so
 that there is something tangible to track.

 *1.*
 {code}
 removeBlocks(collectedBlocks);
 {code}
 should be after {{logSync}}, as we do in other FSN places (rename, delete,
 write with overwrite), the reason is discussed in HDFS-2815 and
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-6871?focusedCommentId=14110068page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-14110068
 *2.*
 {code}
 stat = FSDirStatAndListingOp.getFileInfo(dir, src, false,
 FSDirectory.isReservedRawName(src), true);
 {code}
 We'd better to use {{dir.getAuditFileInfo}}, since it's only for audit log.
 If audit log is not on, we don't need to get the file info.
 *3.*
 In {{truncateInternal}},
 {code}
 INodeFile file = iip.getLastINode().asFile();
 {code}
 is not necessary.

Hi [~eddyxu] . There will be some chance to trigger a bug when you add a
hotswap disk. For example, if you remove a disk as disk1 from DN1, the block
on disk1 DN1 should be repicated to other machine, there is a chance for DN1 to
accept the block on disk1 to another disk on DN1 as disk2. Then when you add
disk1 from a hotswap state, the Volumemap in datanode will add replica from
disk1 to replace the same block in disk2 . Code as below:
  ReplicaInfo oldReplica = volumeMap.add(bpid, newReplica);
  if (oldReplica != null) {
FsDatasetImpl.LOG.warn(Two block files with the same block id exist +
on disk:  + oldReplica.getBlockFile() +  and  + blockFile );
  }
When you trigger the blockreport, the block on disk1 is 0 currently on namenode
side.So processReport will go into processFirstBlockReport method in
BlockManager.java. Follow the code path , when call BlockInfo.addStorage method
and the StorageInfo in namenode is disk2 don't match the storage report by
disk1, so we just update the storageinfo , and set prev and next node to null
in triplet cause we don't call listInsert on DatanodeStroage.addBlock. We miss
the chance to move the blockInfo to head.
It is okay if you don't restart the datanode. If you restart the datanode,
after you insert delimiter, we keep to move the node to the head, when we
encounter the block we miss to set the next and prev node, npe will throw. And
after that , the triplet on BlockInfo is mess. The datanode can't be use anyone
except you restart your namenode.
Hope i make it clearly.

 *1.*
 {code}
 removeBlocks(collectedBlocks);
 {code}
 should be after {{logSync}}, as we do in other FSN places (rename, delete,
 write with overwrite), the reason is discussed in HDFS-2815 and
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-6871?focusedCommentId=14110068page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-14110068
 *2.*
 {code}
 stat = FSDirStatAndListingOp.getFileInfo(dir, src, false,
 FSDirectory.isReservedRawName(src), true);
 {code}
 We'd better to use {{dir.getAuditFileInfo}}, since it's only for audit log.
 If audit log is not on, we don't need to get the file info.
 *3.*
 In {{truncateInternal}},
 {code}
 INodeFile file = iip.getLastINode().asFile();
 {code}
 is not necessary.

 This is to abstract and define raw erasure coder API across different codes
 algorithms like RS, XOR and etc. Such API can be implemented by utilizing
 various library support, such as Intel ISA library and Jerasure library.

Thanks for your clarifying. We would leverage existing native libraries
implementing the code. I have checked the ISA-L library, which supports
encoding and decoding using either Cauchy matrix or Classic Vandermonde matrix.
For decoding, since in most time only one parity block is to be recovered, one
optimization would be to simply use XOR.

 Currently the {{.reserved}} patch check function is:

 {code}
 And {{DOT_RESERVED_PATH_PREFIX}} is {{/.reserved}}, it should be

 _/.reserved_, we say it's _/.reservedpath_, then the check is wrong.

 HDFS-1362 requires DataNode to reload configuration file during the runtime,
 so that DN can change the data volumes dynamically. This JIRA reuses the
 reconfiguration framework introduced by HADOOP-7001 to enable DN to
 reconfigure at runtime.

 Similar with {{append}}, lazy persist (memory) file should not support

 {quote}
 Appends to files created with the LAZY_PERSISTflag will not be allowed in the
 initial implementation to avoid the complexity of keeping inmemory and
 ondisk replicas in sync on a given DataNode.

 All these will be processed once all the services (common and state specific)
 are started, because after this patch everything starts under same lock.

Hi Vinay, I do not oppose the idea of using lock. But it seems not easy to get
it right as some unit tests still failing. Also, it will be harder for
changing the code later on. Why not adding a boolean for indicating namenode
starting up? It looks like a straightforward solution to me.

 should be after {{logSync}}, as we do in other FSN places (rename, delete,
 write with overwrite), the reason is discussed in HDFS-2815 and

 *2.*
 {code}
 stat = FSDirStatAndListingOp.getFileInfo(dir, src, false,
 FSDirectory.isReservedRawName(src), true);
 {code}
 We'd better to use {{dir.getAuditFileInfo}}, since it's only for audit log.
 If audit log is not on, we don't need to get the file info.
 *3.*
 In {{truncateInternal}},
 {code}
 INodeFile file = iip.getLastINode().asFile();
 {code}
 is not necessary.

[~mingma], thank you for working on this.

I think the test failures shown in the last Jenkins run are unrelated. I did
multiple test runs locally, and they always passed.

A few comments on the patch:
* {{FSImage#saveNamespace}}: It's possible to leave this method after adding
the transaction ID to the checkpointing set, but without removing it. This
would leave the transaction ID in the set permanently, and I believe it would
then be impossible to checkpoint at that transaction ID again. Even though
{{removeFromCheckpointing}} is called in a {{finally}} block, it is preceded by
a call to {{FSEditLog#startLogSegmentAndWriteHeaderTxn}}, which can throw
{{IOException}}. I think we'll need to wrap the whole logic in a second layer
of try-finally to guarantee the transaction ID gets removed from the set.
* {{FSImage#saveFSImageInAllDirs}}: Now that this is wrapped in try-finally,
there is an existing line of code that needs to be indented.

 TestStandbyCheckpoints failed in [precommit build
 2620|https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HDFS-Build/2620//testReport/]
 due to the following issue:
 - both nodes were in Standby state, and configured to checkpoint as fast as
 possible
 - NN1 starts to save its own namespace
 - NN2 starts to upload a checkpoint for the same txid. So, both threads are
 writing to the same file fsimage.ckpt_12, but the actual file contents
 correspond to the uploading thread's data.
 - NN1 finished its saveNamespace operation while NN2 was still uploading. So,
 it renamed the ckpt file. However, the contents of the file are still empty
 since NN2 hasn't sent any bytes
 - NN2 finishes the upload, and the rename() call fails, which causes the
 directory to be marked failed, etc.
 The result is that there is a file fsimage_12 which appears to be a finalized
 image but in fact is incompletely transferred. When the transfer completes,
 the problem heals itself so there wouldn't be persistent corruption unless
 the machine crashes at the same time. And even then, we'd still have the
 earlier checkpoint to restore from.
 This same race could occur in a non-HA setup if a user puts the NN in safe
 mode and issues saveNamespace operations concurrent with a 2NN checkpointing,
 I believe.

+1.
Will convert this into HADOOP jira as most changes are in common and commit as
such.

- There are quite a few classes added by the patch. Please add javadoc for all
the new classes.
- For XorRawEncoder/XorRawDecoder, we should have javadoc describing the class
but not only Ported from HDFS-RAID.
{code}
+/**
+ * Ported from HDFS-RAID
+ */
+public class XorRawEncoder extends AbstractRawErasureEncoder{
{code}
- The word Raw can be dropped in the class names. For example,
AbstractRawErasureCoder is better to be called AbstractErasureCoder

 This is to abstract and define raw erasure coder API across different codes
 algorithms like RS, XOR and etc. Such API can be implemented by utilizing
 various library support, such as Intel ISA library and Jerasure library.
