Thanks for the continued work here Kitti, looks pretty good to me!

I'm +1 pending the following:

- ErasureCoding.java: need a {{hasHighestPriorityLowRedundancyBlocks}} check to
prevent NPE
- NamenodeBeanMetrics.java: prefer to follow styles and add line breaks inside
the getter methods.

Thanks for the comments [~xiaochen]! I fixed them in the latest patch.

About TestLowRedundancyBlockQueues#doTestStripedBlockPriorities, the first
block in the loop will get into the highest priority queue, because the
LowRedundancyBlocks#add is invoked with curReplicas=1, and the other blocks
will not get to the highest priority queue, because the add is called with
curReplicas=1+i where i is more than 0. Adding the corrupt blocks does not
increase the metric, it stays one, because the blocks added in the loop are not
removed. Does this answer your question?

Thanks for revving Kitti.

- ECBlockGroupStats and ReplicatedBlockStats: I think it's semantically better
to make the new field final. (addXXX isn't a good name when it's doing a
'set'). I think it's ok here to just add an overload to the ctor, given builder
a more tedious change and we don't expect the stats to change often in the
future.
- Sorry I didn't bring this up in the last comment. See
http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r3.0.0/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-common/Compatibility.html
 for a full compat guideline. The new field in {{ClientNamenodeProtocol.proto}}
need to be optional to be wire-compatible with older versions.
- With the proto change, in {{PBHelperClient}} you can check the proto
{{hasXXX}}, and if so, {{getXXX}}.
- minor, we can rename {{isHighestPriorityBlocksStatSet}} to
{{hasHighestPriorityLowRedundancyBlocks}} to match protobuf.
- Could you clarify about
{{TestLowRedundancyBlockQueues#doTestStripedBlockPriorities}} a little? I was
hoping to see the test where [1, parityBlkNum) of corrupt blocks doesn't change
highest priority queue, and the last (parityBlkNum) corruption would cause the
queue to increase - but I may be missing something

Thanks [~xiaochen] for the comments. I fixed your comments in patch v009. I
agree that in this case fsck output does not add much value here, so I removed
that modification.

Thanks for the continued work on this Kitti! I think this is pretty close, some
comments:
- For EC blocks, low redundancy is not having 0 or 1 replicas. I guess we could
borrow from the comment of {{LowRedundancyBlocks#getPriorityStriped}}, to call
it 'at highest risk of loss'.
- {{ECBlockGroupStats}} and {{ReplicatedBlockStats}} are public, so we cannot
change the constructors. Can either add an overload ctor, or add use builder
pattern if you want.
- I think don't feel strongly about the new fsck option. But for cleanness I
propose we do the metrics work here, and split that out to another jira. My
take is that with the new stats admins can get the information they want, and
the fsck flag seems to add limited value.

erasure coded blocks with the highest priority and the deprecated methods are
not used anymore.

Thanks for the comments [~andrew.wang]! If I use the size of the highest
priority queue then I not only count the one replica blocks, but the missing
replica blocks as well. But as you say, maybe that's even better, because this
way we can see the NN recovery activities better. [~xiaochen], what do you
think about this?
 * Good catch on the deprecated methods, I will fix that with the next patch.
 * About the fsck, there is a new flag for this one replica metric, so the
admin can only see the metric, if it is used with the flag
-listonereplicablocks, like fsck . -listonereplicablocks. But I can remove that
functionality if it does not add value.

Andrew Wang commented on HDFS-13658:

Hi Kitti, thanks for working on this! IIUC in your patch, it calls
updateOneReplicaBlocks in different places in BlockManager to track this
metric. However, don't we already have this metric in LowRedundancyBlock, via
the size of the highest priority queue? This would be an easy way of also
handling the EC case, since it uses the highest priority queue for minimally
durable blocks. Exposing the lengths of these different queues might be
interesting more generically, since it would give more detailed insight into NN
recovery activities. I'll also note that countNodes is a somewhat expensive
function, so it's not good to be calling it frequently in the BM.

A few other comments:

* ClientProtocol#getStats is deprecated so we shouldn't be putting new fields
there. I think getReplicatedBlockStats and getECBlockGroupStats are the correct
replacements. Similar for the new beans, there are Replicated and EC classes,
shouldn't go into NameNodeMXBean.
* Do we need the fsck changes? fsck already shows the number of
under-replicated blocks, which is a very similar sign that the cluster is not
healthy. If an admin isn't seeing the existing fsck metric, they aren't going
to see this one either. This would save us making the protocol changes, if
we're just exposing new NN metrics.

Thanks [~xiaochen] for the comments! In patch v007 I modified the code so it
doesn't use LowRedundancyBlocks anymore, but updates the one replica metric
every time a replica is added or removed in BlockManager. And because I can't
test the new code via TestLowRedundancyBlockQueues, I wrote some other tests in
TestOneReplicaBlocksAlert.

Thanks for revving Kitti. As discussed offline and as you hinted, let's not
change priority queues for this.

bq.  Do you think I should keep or remove the integration test?
Given that unit test already covers the scenarios, we can remove the
{{TestOneReplicaBlocksAlert}} test for reduced test execution time. :)
bq. number of the current replicas for decrement
I think we need to modify the call path for from {{BlockManager}}, to get the
current replicas during removal (and handle similarly for decrements coming
from {{update}}, which already has {{curReplicas}}).
{{BlockManager#countNodes}} can do that, and it looks to be O(1).

Thanks for the comments, [~xiaochen]! I uploaded patch v005 which fixes most of
your comments:
 * I added a "listonereplicablocks" flag to fsck
 * isStriped checking is removed
 * I added test coverage in TestNameNodeMetrics.
 * I verify for the new metric in the existing test cases of
TestLowRedundancyBlockQueues and that covers the test cases suggested by you.
However I kept the TestOneReplicaBlocksAlert integration test as well, because
that checks if everything is working together well. Do you think I should keep
or remove the integration test?
 * About using a set instead of a single long: If I use a long, the metric
increment still works fine, because I know the number of the current replicas,
however when the metric decrement happens, I would need the information on what
was the previous replica number when the previous increment happened. But the
metric decrement can happen from various reasons, for example if the whole file
was removed, or if more replicas were created for the block, and in some cases
there is no information on what was the previous replica count. But I agree
with you that I shouldn't store the block infos. Do you have any suggestions on
how to fix that?
I can only think of creating another priority queue in LowRedundancyBlocks, but
I probably that would ruin a bunch of other things, or if I don't store the
whole block info, just its id for example.

Thanks for working on this Kitti! Looks good in general, some comments:
 - Changing default fsck output is considered incompatible, see -HDFS-11259- /
HDFS-7933 for some examples. For this one, I think we can add a flag to fsck
and only calculate/output when the flag is provided
 - {{LowRedundancyBlocks#incrementBlockStat}}, isStriped is already checked in
the if statement.
 - Why is {{LowRedundancyBlocks#oneReplicaBlocks}} a set than a long? holding
all the blockinfo may be expensive.
 - Need more tests to cover a few more scenarios: 1 replica, rf=1, should not
report; 1 replica, rf=3, should report; 2 replicas, rf=3, should not report.
Ideally we should do this in unit tests which would run faster than a
minidfscluster, see {{TestLowRedundancyBlockQueues}} for example.
 - Good to add test coverage in {{TestNameNodeMetrics}} too

[~gabor.bota], thanks for noticing it! I changed that in patch v003.

> fsck, dfsadmin -report, and NN WebUI should report number of blocks that have
> 1 replica. We have had many cases opened in which a customer has lost a disk
> or a DN losing files/blocks due to the fact that they had blocks with only 1
> replica. We need to make the customer better aware of this situation and that
> they should take action.

Thanks for the patch [~knanasi], I need more time to give a deeper review on
this but I've stumbled into an issue by peeking into the v002 patch: you've
changed the imports in LowRedundancyBlocks.java:20-23 to a wildcard. This could
be an issue when backporting this patch, please fix this by using separate
imports.
