I took a hack at fixing the java warning, I think this works:

{code}
ListString names = Lists.newArrayListWithCapacity(json.keySet().size());
for (Object o: json.keySet()) {
  names.add((String)o);
}
return names;
{code}

Also, why are we using a map still with {{JsonUtil#toJsonMap(ListXattr)}}?
Shouldn't we be doing {{toJsonArray}}?

Andrew Wang commented on HDFS-6375:

Upon looking closer, you're totally right. I think re-using the existing XAttr
serialization isn't going to work so well for WebHDFS also because of the
direct REST API; I was okay with the funny handling where we ignore the values
for the Java clients, since that's an internal implementation detail, but here,
the on-the-wire format is public. My bad.

Based on this, I think we should serialize a JSON array of just the string
names on the NN side, and then pull it out and return a plain List in
WebHDFSFileSystem. This way, REST clients get a nice format (no need to parse
the array of maps).

Does this sound reasonable to you?

Real close, just a few more quick comments:

- indent is off in PBHelper
- JsonUtil still has toXAttrNames, can we do a similar change like in
DFSClient, i.e. get the map of key/values, turn the keys into a list?
- Paranoia tests, could we also test listXAttr on a file that doesn't exist,
and a file without any xattrs?

+1 pending these + Jenkins

Hey Charles, looks good except I had a more thorough cleaning in mind when I
suggested switching from Strings to XAttrs. ClientProtocol is still passing a
ListString rather than ListXAttr, I expected it to be XAttrs everywhere
until DFSClient where we'd turn it into a map with XAttrHelper and return the
map keys, sort of like in getXAttrs. This should also save us writing some
serde code (e.g. in JsonUtil).

I'll also trigger a manual test-patch.sh run to see about those test failures.
Thanks for the rev!

Andrew Wang commented on HDFS-6375:

Took a look at the patch, I had a few review comments. Overall, it's definitely
the right idea, these are mostly just small things.

* Unrelated javadoc change in FileSystem
* Whitespace in DFSClient.java, could we align the exception classes like the
other methods in this file?
* Extra newline in DistributedFileSystem.java
* Whitespace change in PBHelper I think is unnecessary, it already looks
correct (double-indent)?
* I think it'd be better to make the internal client/server API pass XAttrs
with null values rather than Strings, since this way we can use the same
client-side code to turn them into strings. We basically would just return the
keys of the XAttrMap. This is also a more compact encoding since the namespace
is encoded as an enum.

Test:
* line with a whitespace only change
* typo: xaddr
* Would be good to see a test with the superuser, a normal user, and a trusted
xattr to test the filtering
* I personally prefer the style of static imports for asserts, IDEs often have
a short cut to do this for you

bq. This statement is somewhat ambiguous in that it doesn't specify whether the
search access is to the file or directory on which the extended attributes
exist or the parent directory of the file/directory (on which the extended
attributes exist).

Yes, the parent directory is the correct semantic, similar to how unlink()
works. You don't need write permission on a file to unlink it... just on the
enclosing directory.

Charles Lamb commented on HDFS-6375:

This is a clarification of the initial comment at the top of this Jira.

From the attr(5) manpage:

{noformat}
   Users with search access to a file or directory may retrieve a list of
   attribute names defined for that file or directory.
{noformat}

This statement is somewhat ambiguous in that it doesn't specify whether the
search access is to the file or directory on which the extended attributes
exist or the parent directory of the file/directory (on which the extended
attributes exist). It turns out that when one tries out extended attribute
commands on ext4, it's the latter. e.g. if you have /mydir/myfile and you have
extended attributes on myfile, then you need to have search access to myfile in
mydir.

Thanks Andrew for filing this JIRA. Me, Alejandro, Yi discussed about this
listing API initially when we defining APIs. That time we felt get api is
enough for immediate needs and if there is a interest in listXattrs we can do.

+1 on having separate API, and I don't see this can be blocker for merge

[~cnauroth], sorry for the ambiguity (I had to re-read it a few times myself).
What is being suggested are two things:

(1) Create a new list xattrs api which would list xattrs to those who have
permission, and
(2) Remove scan access completely -- you have to have read access or you
don't get anything.

So if you call the new proposed method in (1) and you only have execute
(scan) permission to the file/directory then you don't get back anything. This
would match the semantics of the Linux api: http://linux.die.net/man/2/listxattr

Does this make more sense?

Thanks Charles, a few comments:

* We shouldn't be mutating XAttrs, since I think with this patch, it wipes out
the value of our ownly in-memory copy. We need to build a fresh set with just
the name.
* We also should have some tests verifying this behavior, hopefully would have
caught the above
* Extra {{LOG.info(has ReadAccess}}

Charles Lamb commented on HDFS-6375:

[~andrew.wang] and I had an offline discussion. He is concerned that
permissions fallback does not provide any distinction between true null values
(i.e. no value was set for the xattr when it was created) and you don't have
permission null values. He proposes that we add a new xattr method in the api
which will allow for scanning values, similar to
http://linux.die.net/man/2/listxattr. If there are xattrs with null values then
it will return those as long as the caller had access. If you only have scan
access then the method would not even return the name.

[~cnauroth], [~hitliuyi], what are your thoughts?

I agree that handling this as a separate API would be less error-prone, and it
seems it would be more consistent with existing implementations too.

bq. If you only have scan access then the method would not even return the name.

I didn't quite follow this statement, because I thought the point of scan
access was to allow the user to see the full list of xattr names even if that
user isn't authorized to read the values. Could you please clarify?

Alternatively, we could just look at the permissions and only return the names
(or names + values) based on the permissions that the caller has.

 We don't necessarily need to add full-on support, but we should at least
future-proof the getXAttr API with a flag EnumSet.
