George Bush Knows Why They Hate Us

Our government, media and schools start burnishing the false notion of
American moral superiority into our brains at a very young age.

There is a great body of evidence which obliterates the inane notion that
the United States is a benevolent world leader. Despite the ready
availability of contrary evidence, many Americans remain blind to the truth
about our despised nation, and choose to believe the fairy tale version of
“truth, justice and the American Way”. The sad reality is that America is
an imperialistic, avaricious war machine ruled by the wealthy.

Hiroshima wasn't uniquely wicked. It was part of a policy for the mass
killing of civilians

At the time, there was little immediate sense that something utterly
extraordinary had happened, or that life had changed for ever. After August
6 1945, popular newspapers wrote half nervously and half exultantly about
the coming of the "atomic age", but the most widespread reaction was mere
thankfulness that the war was over.

The bomb didn't win it

The idea that it was militarily necessary to drop the atomic bomb in 1945
is now discredited. The first exhaustive examination of Japanese, Soviet
and US archives, by Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, confirms the argument that Truman
went ahead in order to get Japan to end the war quickly before the Soviet
Union came into the Pacific war and demanded a say in Asia.

Sixty years and 242,437 lives later, Hiroshima remembers

As they lay dying amid the ruins of their city, the victims of the
Hiroshima bomb craved one thing above all - water. Yesterday morning cups
of water were brought as symbolic offerings as, 60 years to the day after
the city was vapourised, Hiroshima remembered its dead.

Israel's secret bomb

While it is undoubtedly true that Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy were
opposed to Israeli acquisition of nuclear weapons (How the UK gave Israel
the bomb, August 4), later US administrations and their Nato allies have
adopted policies of secret, and then more overt, cooperation with Israel.
Knowing nuclear weapons are only as effective as their delivery systems,
they have made sophisticated systems available to Israel. According to the
Monterey Institute, as well as 50 Jericho 2 missiles targeted at the Middle
East, Israel has also Ra'am planes (range 4,500km) and Shavit space
launchers (4,800 km) that have the capability to strike targets in the EU,
western Russia and north Africa, as well as central and south Asia.
