Punishing activists or pursuing terrorists? - American abduction of Ramzy Baroud in Brunei

Ramzy Baroud, who teaches mass communications at Curtin University of Technology in Malaysia and freelances for Asia Times Online, recently noticed he didn't have enough pages in his US passport for a trip to Dubai, where he was to participate in the 4th annual Arab Thought Foundation conference. So he added a stop at the American Embassy in Brunei to his pre-departure to-do list. As the veteran journalist found out after waiting more than three hours, the US government had him on a list of their own.

The US has used torture for decades.

All that's new is the openness about it

In Iraq the dirty work is already being handed over to Iraqi death squads, trained by the US and supervised by commanders like Jim Steele, who prepared for the job by setting up similar units in El Salvador.

Torture Degrades Us All

For those who think we live in an age of terror, it is intuitively appealing to believe that torturing one person to save many is the right thing to do. Discussion of torture should not be taboo, but arguments for it must withstand moral scrutiny.

From Creating Realities to Refusing Questions:

They know, that information is power. So they fabricate it (Niger uranium documents), disseminate it through the corporate press (Judith Miller), pay for positive spin in that "free press" (Armstrong Williams), stage favorable press briefing questions, set up "unrehearsed" encounters between the president and troops (October 2005 teleconference), buy positive press coverage of the U.S. occupation in the "free" Iraqi press

Were looking for a few good refuseniks

Do our government's poorly paid contract killers deserve our "support" for blindly following orders?

If we are, as Jean-Paul Sartre posited, defined by our actions, most of the blame for the murder of more than 100,000 Iraqis belongs to our top government officials. But Bush's armchair warriors couldn't have invaded Iraq without a compliant and complicit United States military--one that, it should be noted, is all volunteer.

The case for cutting and running

A war based on a lie based on torture

One of the key lies used by Bush to sell his immoral war in Iraq was the claim of links between Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath regime and Al Qaeda. For example, in February 2003, Bush claimed that :
Saddam Hussein has longstanding, direct and continuing ties to terrorist networks. Senior members of Iraqi intelligence and al Qaeda have met at least eight times since the early 1990s. Iraq has sent bomb-making and document forgery experts to work with al Qaeda. Iraq has also provided al Qaeda with chemical and biological weapons training.

And that :
We also know that Iraq is harboring a terrorist network headed by a senior al Qaeda terrorist planner. This network runs a poison and explosive training camp in northeast Iraq, and many of its leaders are known to be in Baghdad. The primary source for these claims was a high-level Al Qaeda captive named Ibn al-Shaykh

American hunger: Are scientists lying?

The basics: the Fed has surveyed 60,000 American families. It found 88.1% to be ?food secure? ? they don?t worry about getting food. But 11.9% are ?food insecure? ? sometimes they don?t know if they can afford food, but by doing without medications or delaying the rent they avoid hunger. That category is 13.5 million households. Finally 3.9%, or 4.4 million American households, sometimes go hungry for lack of money.
