[Histonet] RE: Histonet Digest, Vol 128, Issue 5
Dear Ronda Obviously you've tried the company that cleaned and converted the machine for assistance? I think the issue you may have is that Thermo may not want to get involved with a machine converted by a third party (you can understand why) and I'd have thought that the third party retained some responsibilities too. I recently started a new job in a research facility. They do mostly cardiovascular work and work with stents and valves. I came from clinical and all paraffin. The research lab does paraffin and plastic . Before I started, they attempted to convert a processor that had been used for paraffin processing to a plastic processor. Not much difference in processing, still uses same reagents but of course, no paraffin. The problem is this - no one here seems to know this processor other than pressing start, i have tried unsuccessfully to reprogram the instrument, I have transferred data from the other plastic processor, which is the same model but has always been used for plastics. I can process but I constantly have error codes and alarms. I have never worked with this model of processor before. The suggestion from one of the other techs has been to purchase a new processor. That may be necessary but they paid over $1000 for a company to clean and convert this processor and I think that I should try to get it to work instead of just buying new. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this. We do not have a service contract with Thermo. I am hoping someone works on this type of instrument and can help me get it running properly. [Histonet] Pathology Transcription
I have a couple of questions... One, what do you all use for resources for finding a good pathology transcriptionist? We've done the typical things but have been unable to fill our open position with a strong candidate. Second, I would like to cut down on the amount of paper shuffling our transcription department does. It's unbelievable! The transcriptionist handles the paperwork about 4-5 times before it is stacked and prepared by another area for scanning. Any suggestions? We cannot go completely paperless at this time due to the upfront expense but I am interested in trimming down the handling that is done in transcription so the transcriptionist can focus more on typing rather than hunting requisitions. Part of the issue is the pathologists desire to hold each requisition in their hands so I am fighting that battle as well. Thank you in advance for your input! I'd appreciate any suggestions. Re: [Histonet] Pathology Transcription
Yours is the typical situation all pathology departments confronted way back in the 1970's before starting to use computers. To start I think you should do a cost study of how much you are spending in all this paperwork and compare it to the up-front cost to go paperless. Perhaps this comparison will convince your pathologists that it is worth coming out of the ancient world to the present.Meanwhile you should study all the forms you use and delete those not completely vital for record keeping. As to your transcriptionist I advise you to contact a training facility, ask for the best trainee and try it. Perhaps you will get a diamond in brute you can cut to perfection. René J. RE: [Histonet] Sekura Tissue Tek Block Storage
As we reuse block file drawers, we run a piece of bold colored tape (as wide as the front of the drawer) across the front. We use a different color for each year which helps quickly distinguish one year from the next when pulling or filing blocks. Works very well here and is inexpensive. Good luck.
