Re: [Histonet] Pregnancy and the Histo lab

2017-07-19 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
Hi Kimberly,

I was recently pregnant and stayed away from sentinel node specimens, and
mounting media (Toluene can cause birth defects). I am also a supervisor so my
exposure was limited anyways. I would say whatever the woman is comfortable
with I would let them be around, except the two I stated above. If she wasn't
comfortable with formalin or Americlear (our xylene sub) I would have found
something else that she could do besides microtomy like filing, send outs,
cytology etc. I think it's very important that we are as careful as we can be
in regards to pregnancy in the histology lab.

Amanda

Subject: [Histonet] Pregnancy and the Histo lab

Hello from Utah all Histo folks.

I would like some input on Pregnancy and working in a Histology lab. I
worked through both pregnancies and had healthy children. That being said I
know much has changed in 30 years. So how are labs dealing with it now? Less
time around formalin? Xylene? No pregnant ladies in the Histo lab???

There is some research out there, but would like to know how other histology
Supervisors handle it.

Thanks in advance

[Histonet] Leica SelecTech Stains

2017-07-10 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
For those of you using the SelecTech stains...

Do you use the entire system (define and blue buffer), or just the hematoxylin
and eosin?

It seems from previous posts everyone who has used it is very happy with it,
I'm just curious if we can stick with a less pricey differentiation and bluing
solution.

Thanks in advance

[Histonet] Stand Alone Heat Extractor

2017-05-15 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
Hi Everyone

I am hoping someone can help me out here... I am in search of stand-alone heat
extractors for our cryostat. I am told they are hard to come by and was
curious if anyone knew of any companies that have them? The one I know of
isn't an approved vendor yet, and I am trying to avoid going through that

[Histonet] EBUS/EUS Pathology Billing

2016-10-14 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
Happy Friday Everyone!

I have a question for those of you who send a tech or a cytotechnologist to
assist the pathologist with EBUS/EUS procedures...

What CPT codes are you using when billing? Are you billing a technical
component for the staining of the slides during the procedure? (We use Diff
Quik) Do you just bill the professional component?

Thanks for any help with this!

Re: [Histonet] Xylene and Formalin substitutes

2015-10-22 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
Good Morning!

Our lab actually just went through some research regarding this, so I thought I
would share.
We have used the xylene substitute Americlear from Cardinal Health for a long
time. It works well with our reagent alcohols and formalin, and we haven't had
any processing or staining issues with it. I think the price isn't that bad
either. Another benefit is how safe it is compared to xylene and some other
substitutes. We were looking into getting a new piece of cytology equipment,
but we would have had to change our xylene substitute. The approved
substitutes (Pro-Par, Thermo Shandon Xylene Substitute, and Histo-clear) all
had really bad MSDS's. Some of them seemed worse than xylene! I can't remember
which one, but it said it caused birth defects which was a big NO since a few
of us in the lab still want more babies.
Because of the safety issue, we didn't switch.
I would be interested in any answers you get for formalin substitutes if you
don't mind! I know our lab tried some before, but it didn't fix lymph nodes
very well.

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Subject: [Histonet] Xylene and Formalin substitutes

Hello everyone. I'm interested in starting a conversation at my workplace
regarding substitutes for xylene, and if there are any substitutes for
formalin. If anyone out there is using any can they please give me feedback
regarding the following questions,

1. Name of substitutes?
2. Pros and Cons?
3. Any quality issues when performing H, IHC or Special Stains?
4. Is it cost effective?
5. Does it require different dehydrants other than alcohol?
6. If formalin is still used as fixative, what xylene substitute works
best with formalin?

I appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

[Histonet] Gemini AS Stainer

2015-07-23 Thread Amanda Reichard via Histonet
Good Morning Histonet!

I've looked through the archives and couldn't find anything recent so I thought
I would just go ahead and ask...

We currently have a Prisma that we love for HE's but we are looking for a
cytology stainer. Possibly one that would take up less counter space.

Has anyone had experience with the Thermo Gemini AS stainer? If so what are the
pro's/cons's/love/hates?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jon,

I just wanted to mention the possibility of your students finding jobs in
research labs. Many research labs at universities utilize techs in histology
that are not certified and, as long as they're in the US or Canada, that
experience does meet ASCP requirements to sit for the exam. I've worked in
research labs for the last 3 years and took my HTL exam last spring. This is
great because the techs can still be paid as full-time employees (though less
than a certified tech) with benefits while working towards their certification.
I'd be happy to talk more with you about this if you have questions or think it
might be helpful!

Best,

I have been following this and would like to ask a few questions.

I am part of a community college electron microscope training program. We teach
the fundamentals of both biological and materials EM, both SEM and TEM.

Our biological students learn plastic sectioning for LM and EM. They do not
learn much paraffin technique, but the ones I have shown have caught on quickly.

They have all been exposed to fixation, dehydration, and embedding in plastic.
They all know how to work safely in a lab.

Most finish with an associates degree in general science, so they all have
basic chemistry, biology, etc. They do not have anything like a real histology
course.

While our materials students seem to find jobs, especially in nearby computer
firms like Intel, IBM, Western Digital etc., our bio students have a harder
time.

Some have asked about histology, I show them the ASCP rules and they get
discouraged, thinking they will never find a place to get in that year of OJT.

There are few NACCLS programs in our area, and some of the course work in such
a program would be redundant for our students.

What is the likelihood that some of my students would qualify for OJT in a
histology lab, and how can I alert them to the possibilities?
