Re: [Histonet] Missouri Society for Histotechnology Lunch and Learn

2015-09-01 Thread Kelley, Amanda via Histonet
[X]Missouri Society for Histotechnology

**Present’s a Fall Lunch n’ Learn**

The Optimization of Fixation & Processing

One of the most fundamentally critical elements of diagnostic histopathology is
first the ability to suspend all cellular activity in tissue and prevent
degradation, and secondly to process that specimen in a manner that facilitates
subsequent steps such as microtomy and staining. The successful result of this
is a microscopic image of cellular detail that most closely emulates the
morphologic structure of disease as well as normal tissue. The concept of
‘fluid transfer’ will be emphasized as a key factor attributing to the success
of fixation and processing. Innovative design in instrumentation will be
reviewed to better understand how the industry has responded to the demand for
more efficient methods. Benefits and selective use of rapid
fixation/processing will be discussed along with methods of troubleshooting. (2
CEU’s)

The Circle of Service

The challenges of health care, particularly in the field of Histology,
oftentimes makes it difficult to deliver quality service. This session focuses
on the imperative that the Histologist must always remember; that we are an
integral and critical part of the diagnostic process. This session will detail
the value and wealth that they to the patient, and therefore that they must
maintain the standard of 'Quality Care'. (2 CEU’s)

Hello my friend, I hope you are well. Sorry Cherie, but the CAP checklist
requires that you use a Lab grade microwave. I would recommend that you order
the BP-110 laboratory grade microwave, it must be vented. Since you're in
Missouri, I would recommend contacting Lab Storage systems in St. Peter's Mo.

RE: [Histonet] MediaLab is Looking for Histology Course Authors

2014-09-25 Thread Kelley, Amanda
Judi,
CLS programs (ASCLS) does NOT offer HT or HTL certification Through
their accreditation agency. They don't recognize Histotech's as technicians in
California. ASCLS is the creator and sponsor of PACE credits. Is this
accrediting agency finally recognizing HT and HTL's as laboratory
professionals? Usually it is only Medical technologists or CLS. Will these
PACE credits be acceptable to the only accrediting agency for Histotech's which
at this time is ASCP?

RE: [Histonet] MediaLab is Looking for Histology Course Authors

2014-09-25 Thread Kelley, Amanda
Judi
Do you think it is fair to NSH, and ASCP (which recognize histotech's as
professionals) to offer PACE credits to the very technicians that ASCLS refuses
to acknowledge as professionals. ASCLS has a bill in the California
legislature which will designate Histotechnicians and Histotechnologists as non
-licensed technicians. So they will fall in a category which does not
recognize them as professionals. Why should Histotechnicians support a group
who does not represent them? Change the CEU's to NSH accredited or ASCP
accredited, they recognize us. Do not use ASCLS, to certify this program. They
do NOT represent histotech's.

Hi Amanda,

I'm sorry if I didn't make the wording clear enough. Our online products are
available in CLS and HT and HTL programs. I did not mean to insinuate that CLS
programs offered HT or HTL certifications. You're right that ASCLS is the
provider of PACE credits. I'm also aware that ASCP is the only accrediting
agency for histology. ASCP absolutely does accept PACE credits.

I hope that answers your questions - Judi

[Histonet] MHT November and CellMarque Lunch N Learn

2014-09-25 Thread Kelley, Amanda
The Missouri Society for Histotechnology (MHT) is having a Fall Lunch n Learn
sponsored by CellMarque.

CELL MARQUE AND MHT
***Present a Fall Lunch n' Learn***
Basic IHC and Troubleshooting
Workshop designed to improve basic IHC knowledge and uncover what goes on
behind the scenes inside your IHC
automated platform. It will touch on different types of detection, explaining
the advantages and disadvantages of each
along with how to determine the best one for your assay. Common causes of
suboptimal staining and troubleshooting
will be discussed. The session will open up to participants' troubleshooting
questions for group discussion. (3 CEU)

Cancer and Antibody Challenge
Get a glimpse at how IHC comes into play for a patient. This workshop will be a
fun, interactive look at how IHC are
used by pathologists. Discussion will be geared for an audience with a basic to
intermediate level of IHC understanding.
Types of cancers and statistics will be discussed along with frequently used
panels and their interpretation. We will touch
briefly on some of the more advanced algorithms as well. We will present real
life scenarios accompanied with various
clues and staining results, and allow the audience to use their newly acquired
knowledge of panel usage to decide what
markers might be helpful. At the conclusion of this talk, the audience will
have seen for themselves how important IHC
can be, and also how panels can be a great tool to assist pathologists with
finding an accurate diagnosis. (3 CEU)

It is my sad duty to tell you that Peggy Wenk passed away
   peacefully
Saturday morning. Her husband and companion of 37 years and her
  sister (from Bend,OR) were there.

As you know Peggy had a large influence in the world of Histology.

She also put herself into her church serving over the years as a
 nursery
school director, Lay Eucharistic Minister and on the vestry.
She sang enthusiastically in the choir and played in the newly
   formed
  bell choir.

Because of our love of books, we both volunteered at the local library.
   We helped collect books, sort them and then helped to sell them;
 raising
  funds for the library's use.

There will be two memorial services: one here in Michigan for all
   her
local family and coworkers, the second in southern California (a
  burial
 at
sea). We are asking that no flowers be sent; instead Peggy has
specified (she and her sister planned the funeral several months
  ago) three
 different
charitable organizations in lieu of flowers.

St. Mary's-in-the-Hills Episcopal Church (Peggy's church)

Shades of Pink Foundation (financial aid to local breast cancer

2014-04-11 Thread Kelley, Amanda
Hint: It is cheaper to book your room at the Chateau on the Lake online than
over the phone for the MSH/NSH meeting. Once you let the hotel know that you
are with the group they are suddenly no longer giving the $129.00 rate for
Friday. Do not call book on line at their website. The block of rooms are gone
for the meeting anyway, and you can't get the rate. So book ONLINE at

RE: [Histonet] Re: Slide Consults

2014-03-20 Thread Kelley, Amanda
Amber,
My lab buys half size colored slide labels and we place them on the
bottom of the slide, they are just a little bit bigger than the size of the +'s
on plus slides. We have a printer for consult slide labels which when they are
received we print these half labels. They do not obscure the labels from the
submitting lab, and we can scan our slides for future reference and
electronically attach them to the case, with both numbers intact.

Sometimes, I get slides back that have stickers on the front under my accession

I feel like I should scribble out the other institution number so that it
doesn't confuse any of us refilling slides. What are your thoughts? Would
anyone like to share their slide send out form?

Well, if you put the label on the back of the slide, it becomes very difficult
for me to move the slide under the microscope!

Surely it's time for us to get Whole Slide Imaging to replace mailing slides
around, now that the units have got down to about the price of a good
microscope. But at 75 I won't see it!

April will be here before you know it, so be sure and reserve your room at The
Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens. Today's featured speaker is Skip Brown, NSH
Historian. He's the guy you see at the NSH convention snapping all the pics.
Skip is presenting two workshops, Optimization of Fixation and Processing in
the 21st Century and Case Studies in Diagnostic Renal Histopathology. The first
workshop, Case Studies in Diagnostic Renal Histopathology will be held on
Friday, April 25th at 3:30pm. Participants will receive detailed information
via handouts on the anatomy and physiology of the renal system. They will also
learn the vital role that histology has with the pathologists as well as the
clinicians. The second workshop will be on Saturday, April 26th at 1:30pm.
This workshop will be great for people wanting to learn about fixation,
including rapid fixation. This session is ideal for students involved in formal
study in histology and a good review for those sitting for the Board exam.
Please make sure you find Skip, introduce yourself, and have your picture made
with him. You won't have to worry about selfie pics for Facebook, get Skip to
do it!! I'm going to ask him if it's possible for him to Photoshop by thighs or
double chin. LOL Looking forward to seeing all of you at Callaway Gardens.
