I don't think that is necessary.  Pathology services are coded by the 
pathologic diagnosis, unlike laboratory testing that requires an ICD10 code or

[Histonet] Testicular biopsy processing

Hello all-although we are a Uropath lab, up until now we have not processed 
testicular biopsies, and it has been years since I have done so. Do most labs 
still use Bouin's Solution as the fixative of choice? Any precautions or 
special handling techniques?

[Histonet] Disposal of slides/blocks

Our lab is once again evaluating disposal of slides/blocks from >10 years ago. 
Maintaining or donating the material do not appear to be feasible options.

Aside from PHI issues, how are labs disposing of this type of material. Do you 
place the slides in sharps containers?  Do you red bag the blocks?

All our specimens are biopsies. Our minimum requirement for grossing biopsies 
is a BA in a science field and then our on-site training. We have two dedicated 
lab assistants trained in this manner. We use one of our histotechs who was 
trained in grossing elsewhere as a 3rd option, but it is not in the general 
histotech job description.

2) Gross core biopsies (all our lab assistants have Bachelors Degrees and have 
been trained)

3) Cytology Prep

6) Prepare some QA statistics

We have been using MediaLab for several years, beginning with their online 
courses and progressing to Document Control and InspectionProof. We are 
awaiting our first CAP inspection in which I expect the inspectors to be able 
to get virtually all the information they need from our MediaLab site. Also, 
customer support is great!



It took a bit of time for the lab staff to accept the concept of online manuals 
and SOP's but in the long run it is a big win.

We keep our spill kits in unobstructed cabinets with bright yellow signage on 
the wall above. We have no problem getting to them as needed, and have never 
had an issue in many, many CAP inspections.

fixed and processed with the specimen, cut nicely, and support the tissue in a 
perfectly flat orientation." We also did that for GI biopsies during my 
residency and it did do a nice job of maintaining orientation, though I assume 
it was a bit of a bother for the GI staff. I believe some dye was placed on the 
cucumber to make it more visible for the GI staff.  Not sure if is still done 
that way at my old hospital.

In my past career in a medium sized community hospital, both aspects of the lab 
were melded. But your issue with the frozen sections is a different one. Your 
director needs to meet with the O.R. or the infection control staff to find a 
way to allow you into the suite without violating any established protocols. If 
you are actually entering the O.R., you really should check to see if there is 
a policy that requires changing scrubs between O.R. area and the lab.

Good Morning,
I am curious to know how many Pathology Departments get lumped into Clinical 
Lab?  Do you wear the same working attire?  Our Pathology Department is really 
small.  We are required to go over the red lines in surgery to get to our 
Frozen Section Room numerous times a day.  They want to put us in the same 
Scrubs as the Clinical Lab which would not allow us to go over the red line.  
The color of scrubs designates where you are from in the hospital. I for one do 
not know how to draw blood or even know what color top tube to use the CLS and 
phlebotomist do.  I only know only about Bone Marrows.  I am getting frustrated 
because to me Anatomical Pathology and Clinical Lab is two different species 
but they keep trying to treat us the same.  The only thing we share is the Lab 
Director and the Pathologists with Clinical Lab.  Feeling like I am not being 
heard.

WE use the biopsy sponges, THOROUGHLY soaked in formalin. They are easy to use 
and not time consuming either for the grosser or the histologist. About 98% of 
our volume is prostate biopsies, and we do not see the compression artifact

Thanks to the suggestions for flooring. We are finding the concept of moving 
all our block and slide cabinets to allow us to lay new flooring overwhelming. 
We may opt to have the housekeeping crew put on a new coating that supposedly 
is more slip resistant. WE are also still researching our disposal of 10 year 
old blocks. Thanks for the suggestions.

[Histonet] Floor Choice Question, and blog post

Good Morning from Frigid Chicago:

Our lab has the opportunity to do some badly needed painting, and also to make 
changes in the floor surfaces. We currently have vinyl in the clinical areas 
and carpeting in the offices. The carpeting will stay. Our decision is whether 
to swap out the vinyl or not. It is slippery, particularly for visitors coming 
from outside in the snow and sleet. We are working with the building management 
firm, but as of yet have not found a surface that is less slippery, but also is 
smooth enough to allow the maintenance people to scrape paraffin of the floor. 
Does anyone have any good flooring suggestions?

Also, what is the longest anyone has closed a lab for maintenance work?

slides from early years have patient ID, so no HIPAA concerns, but what other 
issues are there with disposal? What kind of waste do slides and blocks 
constitute? Are they considered medical waste? Any information, particularly 
from Illinois, appreciated.
