Re: [Histonet] Histonet Digest, Vol 140, Issue 6 Specimen loss

2015-07-08 Thread Richard Yeo
Steve,
I totally agree that 7% tissue loss is extremely high.
Saying that when you have an experienced pathologist that looks at a specimen
and only sees mucoid material he knows that it is most likely that the reagents
in the processor are going to dissolve it.
We have a very low rate of loss, probably one to two blocks per thousand
processed. That's.01-.02%.
No one wants to lose any tissue specimen and put the patient through it again
but it happens.

My goodness 7% tissue loss is ridiculous.
 What fool published that?

A 0.8% loss of tissue is beyond me.
Would any one advertise in the local paper that your center of excellence lab
loses nearly 1% of your specimens?

possibly too small to survive processing is in my opinion, a
 self-fulfilling prophesy,
one to be eschewed and denounced,
or beaten out of the grosser who dares use that description for it is an
 expectation of failure.
That grosser would not last a week around me.
I would walk them to the train station and ask them not to return.

I felt less cantankerous before I read that one.

Re: [Histonet] Bone Saw

2015-02-17 Thread Richard Yeo
We use a small band saw from MAR-MED. cuts through a femoral head like a hot
knife through soft butter. You let the blade do the job, don't force the bone.
Just very little consistent pressure.

I am trying to see what everyone is using at your grossing station for bone
saw to cut femoral heads and toes for osteo. If you are using a Stryker saw
how are you holding the specimens to make good thin sections?

FW: [Histonet] training materials/policies/protocols

2009-04-17 Thread Richard Yeo
I'm not sure if my prior post went through or not. If it did indeed go
through please for give me for posting it again. I didn't get any
responses and my pathologist is really breathing down my back for
anything I can come up with so he can start to train some histotechs.

Thanks again Rich Y

Hey, Histonet Gurus

My pathologist wants me to find any related materials/policies/protocols
for training a histo-tech that qualifies through both CLIA/CAP to do
grossing. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get as far as either
sharing anything or where I can go to find it myself.

   Thanks Rich Y
