Aside from the terrible legal liability that you would open your institution to by asking them to operate "dangerous" equipment when they are not in your employ, sitting at a strange microtome/waterbath set up with different knives, paraffins, processing, just would not be an accurate test. I really liked Thomas Podawiltz's idea. Usually I just ask leading questions and then evaluate during the probation period.
