Re: [Histonet] QIHC Exam Preparers

2020-09-28 Thread Maria Cruz via Histonet
I am very interested in this issue too. I’ve wanted to obtain the QIHC
credential but people I know have failed the exam two and three times.
Someone once told me that the NSHs liaison to the ASAP exam committee was
retired. How can that be good for members of the histology community that
want specialize in IHC?

 __

Hi Histo-peeps:I’m just wondering if someone can shed some light on who
prepares the QIHC exam. Everyone I’ve talked to about the test says that
all of the questions are tricky and cover a lot older topics rather than
more relavent information. So how can we get some folks who understand
today’s IHC world involved in this process? TIA for your input

Re: [Histonet] QIHC

2013-12-28 Thread Lee & Peggy Wenk
All ASCP tests (HT/HTL, HT/MLT, CT, PB, QIHC, QLS, etc.) are all built the
same.

All are multiple choice questions, with 4 choices, one of which is the most
correct. (I won't say only 1 is correct, but if 1 is always correct or
almost always correct except in weird circumstances, and another one MIGHT
be correct under a very strange, weird, rarely to happen circumstance, then
you are to pick the one that is always (or almost always) correct.

Each question has been rated on degree of difficulty from 100-999 points,
with 400 points being passing. But the points don't really mean anything,
ASCP could have rated the questions A through Z, with J+ or I minus minus
being passing. So a 321 point question is slightly harder than a 319, but
much easier than a 403. And 721 is really hard. The person starts out with
questions on the easy to just barely passing side. If they get that one
correct, they get a slightly harder question. If they get that correct, they
get one even more slightly hard. When they get one wrong, they get a
slightly easier question. Whatever the last question degree of difficulty
is, that determines if pass or not - 400 and above = pass; 399 or below =
fail.

The topics of the questions are randomly given out, but always the test will
end up within the percent of topics as indicated under the study guide
(e.g., QIHC has 10% of the questions on general immuno, but 30% on immuno
staining).

There are three taxonomy levels of questions, also:
- Tax I = memorize
- Tax II = troubleshoot (what went wrong); lab math; interpreting charts or
photos
- Tax III = problem-solve (how to fix problem); could include some charts or
photos

So all the ASCP tests are more than just memorizing the reagents, or the
colors, or the steps. It's being able to figure out if something (stain,
results, fixation, whatever) is good or not, and if it isn't - why, and if
it isn't - what can you do to fix it now, or what are you going to do
different next time so it doesn't happened again.

Good luck to anything taking any ASCP certification or qualification exam in
2014!

is the test structured? Is it similar to the HT/HTL certification exam

with multiple answers that could be right and you have to choose the best
answer? Or are the questions pretty straightforward?

Also available from the Michigan Society of Histotechnologists are a
HT/HTL study guide and a Competency Assessment Handbook. They really
are great to have to help your staff pass their exam, as well as in
developing competency assessments to meet your inspection criteria!
The competency assessment has example forms and content of forms that
are useful when integrating assessments in your laboratory.

For your conveinence, our website is www.mihisto.org.

[Histonet] Re: Histonet QIHC

2012-02-09 Thread Beth Cox

Hi Sarah,

I've been working on editing a QIHC Study Guide (sorry, it's not ready
for the public yet!) and so I've been paying quite a bit of attention to
what is on the QIHC exam now-a-days.

I've found that most of the QIHC questions are complex analysis and
problem solving type questions. It's not enough to know that facts, you
must understand how to use the info you have. Since you have been doing
hand-staining and troubleshooting, I expect you will have a good handle
on that stuff. I recommend that you get the DAKO "Immunohistochemical
Staining Methods Educational Guide" and "Educational Guide to Demasking
Antigens" (both are free from DAKO, just call them!) and review those.
The Dako books provide the most concise, complete info you can find.
Review the basic immunology stuff for a refresher. Pay attention to all
the various systems for IHC. Pay extra attention to antigen retrieval,
there are quite a few questions relating to that. Also, understand how
to do the calculations for dilutions and titrations. You can expect a
couple oddball questions about IHC on cytology preps and frozen sections.

Good Luck!

Knowledge never hurts. Just being forced to pass a test will also force you to
understand the procedures and will make you more able to trouble shoot your own
work.
On the other hand, even if having this certification does not increase your pay
scale, it may be a "plus" in the event you decide to change jobs and apply for
a new position.
That "extra certificate" may be what you need to land a better job.
Go for it!

2011-11-15 Thread Walter Benton
I think it is valuable since it allows you to learn things through study and
application that you may not have been previously exposed to while preparing
for the test. The test is strictly theory now versus the first year when
stained slides were submitted and there was zero theory. Given the rapid
changes in histology with ISH, IHC, IFs and other molecular based testing I
don't see how it could hurt you to earn this credential. I'm not sure how pays
is differentiated in the market for this qualification, but I do know that I
see more and more jobs, especially those for IHC that require it or it is
highly desirable for the position.

Re: [Histonet] QIHC

2011-02-12 Thread Lee & Peggy Wenk

I thought I would look up the stats for the QIHC on the ASCP webpage
http://www.ascp.org/PDF/ExamStat.aspx

In 2010, 88 people took the exam, with 80 passing, or 91%.

I then looked over all the stats from 2005-2010 (in 2005, the exam became a
50 multiple choice question exam. Previous, it had been a practical exam.)

442 people took the exam during this time, with 366 passing, or 82.8%.

The pass rates during those years were: 85%, 70%, 81%, 83%, 82%, 91%.

A score of 400 is required to pass.
The lowest score possible is 100. The lowest scores during those years were:
220, 240, 260, 260, 300, 270.
The highest score possible is 999. The highest scores during those years
were: 640, 640, 680, 820, 680, 680.

RE: [Histonet] QIHC

2011-02-10 Thread Stephanie Rivera
Hi Michael,

I used NSH 5th series assessment book, double check on the NSH website. It's
the book with questions and answers for IHC, Enzyme histochemistry. I also used
IHC tutorial by Thermo Shandon online, that was recommended on the histonet
network.
I'm not sure of the website. Maybe someone has that information. Both of these
tools helped me when I passed in April 2009.

Hi all

I am preparing to take the QIHC exam. Does anyone have any suggestions on
what I should study? What areas does the exam concentrate on and what
research material I can use.

Read and digest the Dako book and you will sail through the exam. For a
"specialist type" qualification it really is pitiful.

Pat,
The link below will take you to the Self-Assessment Books by the NSH. #6
covers Immunohistochemistry. It is $15 for NSH members and $35 for non
members. You will also find other resources available at the NSH website.
Histotechnology: A Self Instructional Text, 3rd Edition (Carson and
Hladik) has an updated chapter (chpt 12) on immunochemistry. Also keep
your eye open for state meetings that are offering QIHC review, or the NSH
symposium in the summer or fall. The California Society has their meeting
in May and Ethel Macrae is presenting "Preparing for the QIHC. The
program will be available shortly at http://www.californiahistology.org/
The ASCP also has some on-line courses related to IHC.

using the Labvision.com Tutorial. It prepared me for the QIHC as well as
study book series #5 from NSH (Immunohistochemistry, Enzyme

Go to the public library and have them get for you on interlibrary loan.
Really! The universities in NM probably have a copy, and since they are
supported by your tax dollars, you can get it and read/copy the
necessary pages. That is the way it works here in NJ. Might take a few
weeks. OR try bookstores that specialize in out of print books. Alibris
comes to mind or just google the title of the book.

Subject: [Histonet] QIHC certificate

Hi, all

I have a question about how to QIHC certificate. We have several bilogical
scientists work as full-time employee doing IHC staining. But none of them
has HT certificate. In this case, can they get QIHC certificate? What kind
of courses need they to take?

  Thank you,
