BlackICE Defender - A personal Firewall for the novice user

SUMMARY
BlackICE Defender, by Network ICE, is an excellent personal firewall for
beginners and novice Internet users who wish to protect themselves from
external attacks.
BlackICE is extremely simple to use, and needs practically no
configuration in order to provide a fair level of protection against
casual attacks. The attacks are analyzed and described in simple terms,
in
order to explain what the attacker tried to gain (instead of just
reporting 'packet x to destination port y was blocked').
DETAILS
While BlackICE needs almost no configuration, and provides a good level
of
protection against most attacks, it is not a full-scale firewall. It was
obviously designed with the novice user in mind, and more advanced users
will find it very lacking in configuration options. However, although it
reports the nature of the attack (it has the basic intrusion detection
abilities that makes it able to detect things, like 'Back Orifice Ping',
and also some rather impressive attacks: 'TCP OS fingerprint', 'DNS
Chaos
lookup' and more) you can also ask it to log the actual packets (in case
you want to analyze the attacks further).
This product can not be recommended to be used to defend against
sophisticated hacking attempts, but it can be very effective in stopping
and reporting (it has a nice 'evidence log' feature) most scanning
attempts made by 'script kiddies'. Besides reporting, you can ask
BlackICE
to block the intruder completely (for an hour/day/month/etc), making it
able to stop attacks by blocking the attacker the very second it tries
to
probe the firewall.
BlackICE runs on Windows 95/98/NT and requires a Pentium computer with
16MB RAM and 6.5MB free hard-disk space.
