BIG BLOW IN KUBANG PASU

Mahathir closer to historic defeat as 14 BN centres in Mahathir's hometown
shut down

by our correspondent in Jitra, Kedah

As expected, hundreds of UMNO workers have been leaving the party since
nomination day on November 20. While other BN leaders appear "safe" in
their respective seats - with the exception of MIC president Samy Vellu
in Perak and Gerakan's Koh Tsu Koon in Penang - the BN chairman himself
has been dealt with another blow signalling the Malay-Muslim
dissatisfaction with his anti-ulama diatribe.

On November 20, 14 BN campaign offices in Mahathir's hotly contested
Kubang Pasu parliamentary constituency closed down after party workers
claimed they were "tricked". An UMNO official said supporters of
ex-Menteri Besar Osman Aroff were disappointed with the selection of Dr
Othman Ishak as one of the State candidates in the Kubang Pasu
constituency.

"They have been threatening a last minute withdrawal, but it is
unfortunate the leadership had not taken them seriously," said UMNO
member Mohamad Alias Mokhtar, 38, who was one of hundreds who announced
his decision to quit campaigning for the party.

The last minute defections are causing jitters among top UMNO officials
in Kuala Lumpur, with the main worry being a BN government without
Mahathir. Adding to the worries is the decision by some 300 UMNO
members to join PAS, in a ceremony held here on the night of November
20.

PAS, in a surprise move, has fielded Harakah columnist Subky Latif - a
political lightweight - in one to one fight against Mahathir. Analysts
say if the momentum against Mahathir continues, it is "not impossible
for history in the making".

"PAS's candidate may make history, and such possibilities cannot be
dismissed," said a Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer.

Already, anti-Mahathir sentiments have been running high in this largely
Muslim stronghold since the sacking, arrest and murder attempt under
custody on former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Days before his arrest, Anwar had attracted more than 100,000 people at
a rally in Jitra, the heart of Mahathir's constituency. UMNO branch
members in Kubang Pasu have been campaigning against Mahathir since July
last year, during which sources said the strong pro-Anwar lobby in UMNO
attempted to nominate Anwar to stand for the party's presidential
election.

That prompted Mahathir to launch a massive crackdown in the party,
culminating in leaflets distributed at the UMNO general assembly
condemning Anwar as a sodomite and foreign agent. But observers agree
that anti-Mahathir feelings had already gained footing even before
Anwar's sacking, attributing Mahathir's waning popularity to his remarks
against the Prophet of Islam and Muslims scholars.

Mahathir's lambasting at well known Islamic scholar Dr Haron Din, has
also buoyed PAS' chances to win the Kubang Pasu seat.
