The Afghan war was just starting after a series of military coups, the first
of which toppled the monarchy, and brought pro-Soviet Union governments to
this hard-to-invade country. The cold war, with all its implications, hit
Afghanistan: Soviet troops entered Afghanistan, the United States issued a
warning:

given] I have sent a message today to the US Olympics Committee spelling out
my own position, that unless the Soviets withdraw their troops within a
month from Afghanistan, the Olympic games will be moved from Moscow to an
alternate site or multiple sites, or postponed, or cancelled.
