Keeping Muslims in Touch

A Malaysian website spans the world
By SANTHA OORJITHAM

Hussin, a Bosnian, once studied at the International Islamic University in
Malaysia. This month, he is getting married back home in Bosnia and wants to
invite his Malaysian friend Sri Dewany and her family to the wedding. Hussin is
willing to pay their airfare, but doesn't know how to contact Sri Dewany.
Nouredine, an American, is looking for her step-sister Aisha from Canada.
When the marriage between Nouredine's mother and Aisha's father didn't work
out after two years, Aisha and her father moved to Australia. Nouredine thinks
they are in Sydney and would like to contact Aisha.

These are two of the e-mail pleas received at Reunite
(www.eHalal.com/reunite/reunite_info.php), a free online service helping Muslims
around the world relocate lost family and friends. It serves as a message board
for them to contact each other via e-mail. Reunite also offers members a way to
stay in touch with fellow Muslims and to establish contact with non-Muslims to
exchange information on religion, language, culture and lifestyle.

Reunite is part of a new online Muslim directory service, eHalal.com - an
incubator project launched last July by a group of Malaysian professionals from
importnow.com, a trading e-business headquartered in Florida with branches in
Britain (the retail headquarters) and Malaysia (the Asia-Pacific office, with
logistics and back-end operations). Halal refers to products or practices which
are permissible under Islamic law.

The website's main service is to provide information for Muslim travelers:
Prayer times and the location of mosques in different destinations, plus a
Muslim Hijri calendar (with a summary of important events and their religious
and cultural significance). The directory of services includes listings of
stores, restaurants, hotels, health clubs, doctors and even real-estate agents
catering to Muslim
customers.

The site also offers Arabic lessons (members can listen to a pronunciation
guide); stories of Muslim prophets, holy places and miracles; information on the
five Pillars of Islam (including fasting and the pilgrimage to Mecca); and even
halal recipes and health tips using traditional medicines. The Islamic Forum
section, open to registered members only, discusses topics including
conversion to Islam, intercultural marriages and "sexual problems"
(homosexuality). Another section offers a "shoulder to cry on" for the lovelorn
and others with emotional problems.

As of January, eHalal.com had registered over a million hits from around the
world, says project manager Mahanum Abdullah. Visitors are mainly from
Malaysia and Singapore, but also from other ASEAN countries, the U.S.,
Britain, Australia, and beyond. Mahanun says the site was among the top five
accessed by Malaysian search engine cari.com.my (both in 2000 and this
year). Over 600 people have registered as members. And last year, eHalal.com
was selected top Muslim website by Islam Topsite.com, a Canadian ratings
website that is part of the Shariah Network linking Islamic sites around the
world.

eHalal.com also offers business opportunities for Muslims around the world to
market their halal products. It has prepared an online listing of Islamic
products available internationally and will be setting up links from its website
to relevant organizations. Coming up next: Free matchmaking services
