H-Net* Robbers in lorry leave a trail of destruction

Robbers in lorry leave a trail of destruction By Devid Rajah, Zuhrin Azam Ahmad and Maizatul Nazlina MALACCA: It could have been straight out of a movie script--a five-hour, 400km hot pursuit which began in Mersing, Johor, between two robbers in a lorry and police, which left two policemen seriously injured in Batu Pahat, and ended here with one robber arrested. During the pursuit, the robbers also crashed through a police barricade in Ayer Itam, braved the hail of bullets from pursuing police teams and rammed into at least six cars and a lorry. But it happened for real and fortunately, there were no reports of injuries to members of the public, although witnesses claimed the lorry driver narrowly missed a pedestrian near Pokok Mangga. Police said the drama began at 4.35am yesterday when a Mersing police team headed by Insp Kong Hock Peng tried to intercept the three-tonne lorry which was laden with stolen cigarettes worth RM60,000. It is learnt that the robbers and several other accomplices had tied up security guards at a store in Taman Mersing and took away an assortment of cigarette cartons in the 4am robbery. Acting on information, the police team spotted the white lorry and gave chase in Mersing. The high-speed chase continued through trunk roads in Mersing and proceeded to Kluang and then to Ayer Itam, where police placed barricades to stop the robbers. But the defiant lorry driver and his attendant crashed through the barricade just like in Hollywood movies. At least 17 bullet holes were found at the back of the metal-covered lorry, with one narrowly missing the driver's seat. When the robbers reached Batu Pahat, more patrol cars and vehicles joined in the chase. This time a police patrol car which tried to stop the lorry was rammed into, causing the car to skid and overturn. The two policemen in the vehicle were injured and have been admitted to the Batu Pahat Hospital. The robbers then drove towards Pagoh trailed by patrol cars with blaring sirens. From Pagoh, police said the suspects went to Muar and Tangkak before hitting the North-South Expressway at the Tangkak interchange. They then headed towards Malacca and turned into the Ayer Keroh toll plaza, where the lorry driver drove through the barrier at 7.40am. However, the Johor police team in patrol cars maintained their chase through the Ayer Keroh area, Pokok Mangga, Tengkera, Kota Laksamana, Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Heeren Street and to Jalan Kampung Hulu where the chase ended. Melaka Tengah Deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Hashim Mohamad said many police personnel were deployed to catch the lorry driver who had managed to escape on foot. He said the lorry was low on fuel when it reached the Kampung Hulu area where the driver crashed into a parked Proton Wira and a lorry before the two suspects abandoned the vehicle. At 8.30am, police managed to arrest the driver's accomplice, a 24-year-old lorry attendant from Sabah, near Kampung Hulu. Supt Mohd Hashim said the lorry driver, believed to have been driving betwee
