I recommend this for anybody who doesn't have .net if you don't include vs6
project/workspaces.
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/prjconverter.asp

it works great, simple command line tool to convert from .sln / .vcproj to
.dsw / .dsp

I just want to do a quick straw poll of how many people on this list
DON'T have access to MSVC.NET or above for their MOD development (we
hope to only release MSVC.NET project files with the SDK)?

I don't think I can affort to buy the .NET IDE at this time, especially since
I will have to upgrade my computer just to play HL2. Please keep some support
for VC 6.
Thanks!

I use VS.NET 2003 (7.1) Enterprise Edition

And in regards to the .NET project files, someone could do a search on
SlingShot <- supposedly this little tool should be able to convert the
project files to nmake makefiles.
I haven't tried it so I can't say if it works... sry

XML -> VSNet mini-converter
XML -> Makefile mini-converter
XML -> Nmake mini-converter

You'd only need to know the basic constructs of each destination-type; if
it's auto-generated, it can be ugly, if it works. Optimized, pretty
makefiles aren't a necessity, if it just plain builds properly in the end.

Just an idea. :)

The problem then is the make files will not be updated by steam for
changes to the SDK (assuming the SDK release is still planned through
steam). The 2003toolkit does nothing to solve this. You will have the
same issues of update we have with the current SDK when you have to make
hand adjustments to use later versions of GCC.

For the 4 millionth time, that is just the compiler. It can not read the

Yeah, that's the flipside with all this shiny technology us modders get too
play with. The art requirements are going to be much bigger then HL1, I can
realistically see the MOD I'm working with at the moment* getting an
internal beta together within 2 months, with the content we have with us at
the moment. When we decide we feel like we have enough of a "playable game"
to unleash on the public is any-ones guess** I feel like your estimations
are going to hold true for "full" mods.

* http://www.shadow-phoenix.com - We are relatively inexperienced modders
but there is defiantly the individual skill and talent in the team to pull
us together.

** We are aiming small incremental releases at first so the team can see the
light at the end of the tunnel, because if they can't see actual progress
being made I reckon they will get bored and start dropping.

What? I think you're replying to the wrong message. There was nothing
in HoundDawg's post about gcc and nothing in the reply to his message
about gcc either.

Where did the rant about gcc come from?

Here's another topic since people seem to be in the mood to post to this
list recently...

Realistically, how long do you think it will take a team to release a
MOD for Half-Life2 after the SDK and game is made available to the
public (and I'm talking about a MOD as something other than just
changing the firing rate of the shotgun and releasing that as a MOD,
i.e. something with brand new weapons, brand new maps, etc.)?

My bet is that it will take about 3 to 4 months for MOD developers to
get completely up to speed on the new tools and code. Add in another
month or two for testing, bug fixing, and tuning. I'll predict that the
first full MOD for Half-Life2 won't release a BETA version until at
least May 2005.

Does anyone have any expectations of releasing any full blown MOD any
sooner than that? :)

Not rally, as I still cannot find any mappers that will work for free on a
CTF style mod.

If HL2 rally is gonna ship with no MP other than that CS crap, then we will
need to make all our own maps (or reuse the CS (crap) maps for a basic DM
mod or team mod. As I really don't care for CS(crap) I won't bother to try
an use the maps from it. If I cannot get any mappers to work on a mod with
me, then I will just end up posting code somewhere for mod ideas and hope
someone uses it.

Remember even Counter-Strike beta 1 , and some other cool MP mods were
released faster than that for HL1 if i remember correctly.
Now HL2 is a more complicated engine and may take longer to build stuff for,
but on the other hands:
Valve has stated that hl2 is actually more friendly to modding, will this
balance out with havig to create more detailed assets?
Modders are much more experienced now than they used to be, there are even
professional developers who do modding for fun now, where that seemed much
more rare a few years ago.
Lots of the assets and code for HL1 stuff, seems like it will port quite
nicely to HL2, giving a leg up on getting things up and running.
That being said, mods are infamous victims to bloat and feature creep, so
who knows.

Does anyone have any expectations of releasing any full blown MOD any
sooner than that? :)

Alfred, I'd rather see you guys release the SDK as soon as possible, even if
it only contains MSVC.NET project files. I'd hate to see the SDK delayed in
order to support older environments. If there are really that many people
that use VC6 or whatever, there will be at least someone who does a
conversion in order to make it work with VC6 (as long as there isn't
anything else that requires MSVC.NET) and release a download link for it. I
wouldn't be surprised if there was even an open-source group formed for
this.

Seriously though, just release it the most efficient way you can, the older
dev community will adapt as it has all along. There are also update
releases you can do that can include support for older environments. I'd
just like to see the dev community having the ability to start working with
the new SDK ASAP. There have been many projects sitting on hold for too
many years waiting for the HL2 delivery promise to be fulfilled. With the
holiday season approaching, many developers will have some extra holiday
time to spend coding. So, let's not waste that.

fluxbox with gnome-panel.

my ~/.xinitrc looks like this:

fluxbox &
gnome-panel

(note: leave off the & on the last item, or X will mysteriously die,
because the last program can't exit. fluxbox loves to have it's &)

(huggles gentoo)

Alfred, a VS.NET/VC*++ project->GCC makefile program, standalone,
would be highly useful to a lot of people.

I use cygwin, that include a X client and command line tools (CVS, Bash,
gcc, etc..). For developers: 90% you can't do with bash, cat and grep
can be done with a Perl script. And If you really want linux, you can
install coLinux on a usb pen, a lot faster than pvpm.metropipe.net linux.
Red Hat has a cool tool for windows, 'sourcenav', that index everything
on C/C++ projects. But I found VC6 with Tomato tools cool enough, so
sourcenav its not needed.

I *use* linux directly from the linux pc all the time as well as via ssh

I don't think you answered that question or I missed it. You said

don't see a good reason not to use VC6 when you have it and don't

Yes, you can get the toolkit and have your VC6 GUI use the .NET
compiler. But that still requires VS6 project files which this
whole thread is about.

You are making the assumption that VGUI2 used in Half-Life2 is the same
as VGUI2 (BETA?) used in recent Half-Life Steam updates.
My guess is that the current VGUI2 code isn't backward compatible with
Half-Life1 and back-porting it to work with the older engine wouldn't
provide a significant ROI (return on investment). Having VGUI2
available for a Half-Life1 MOD probably isn't going to attract that many
more people to the Half-Life engine (and thus provide some additional
revenue for Valve).
At some point, support for older game must discontinue. I would imagine
Valve is still seeing some royalties checks for Half-Life1 sales
(Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, etc.) heck, even Gearbox still gets an
occasional royalty check for Opposing Force, but once Half-Life2 becomes
available to consumers, I would predict that Half-Life1 sales fall to
next to nothing.

This implies that Valve will not support mod development in Half-Life 1
anymore. So, if The Specialists decides that graphics and physics will
not contribute to our game enough to put in the major porting effort, we
still will have no interface to the things that TFC and Counter-Strike
already have and have had for more then a year?

Can I assume that people using VS.NET are doing unmanaged C++
projects? Or are you able to do managed C# / C++ DLLs and have them
work with the SDK? (Like I said in a previous thread, I've been out

I prefer VC6 but I have VC.NET as well.

Question though, since VC.NET can convery from VC6 projects, why not
include VC6 projects and then those users using VC.NET can just
convert?

Except that you can't compile from .sln (VS.NET Project) files if I
recall correctly. With the command-line tools you can only compile
from makefiles.

It doesn't have symlinks anymore since it found its way into a CVS
repository. :) It's using includes now.

I know you use 3.4 but do you really require 3.4 for everyone who
uses the SDK or are you sure that 3.3 works, too. There are still
some ugly bugs left in 3.4.1 which will prevent people who compile
other stuff on their machines (e.g. Xorg) from using it.
And I hope this time the SDK will compile without errors out of
the box under Linux. :) I don't think Will is willing to do all

Do you have any dependencies to MSVC.NET or MSVC in general? Or
could the SDK (at least server-side) also be compiled with Borland

I'm usin' VC++ 6 right now, but from what I've heard about .NET, I
think it will be worth the upgrade, so I'll upgrade as soon as my
monetary situation allows. (Which will most likely be before the SDK
is released, at this rate.)

I think MS still has their C++ "Standard" version for .NET - it runs about
$110 and has a limited Visual Studio IDE to work in. I bought one last
spring at Fry's.

That's cheap compared to the $900 for full VS.NET...

It *might* differ country to country, but I know in Australia, you can use
the Academic version for anything other than making money. Non-profit
organizations can use the academic version for instance and distribute their
applications without any legal woes.

And, you cannot redistribute your binaries (AFAIK), except for educational
purposes. So I seem to remember from a VC 6 Student Edition. I could be
mistaken, but that's the impression I recall.

And Alfred; thanks.

While the "most generally accepted" version is GCC 3.3.x at the moment,
3.4.x
is not unreasonable, especially as the remaining issues with 3.4.x is making
steady progress [3.4.x won't compile some things in some situations, which
is
part of why adoption is slow -- then again, Linux mentality always seems to
adopt over time instead of all-at-once].

Sorry for almost stepping out of line -- but this does make me curious.
Have y'all determined just how the SDK is to be built? Does everyone with
GCC have to cobble together their own Makefile? Are you going to use
Autotools (autoconf, automake, autoheader, m4...)? A shell script, perhaps?

We use 3.4.x because we require some of its advanced template support
and also its better processor support. I hope to create a vcproj to
makefile converter for the SDK so a linux build just requires typing
"make" (perhaps after editing a Makefile header to point to custom gcc
binaries or binary output directories). The first version may be more
primitive however (a Makefile like the existing SDK).
