RE: [hlds] is WON being switch off end of this month ?

2004-07-15 Thread Alfred Reynolds
CS 1.5 won't be an official steam game. You can however install it like
a mod and use it that way (but you can't use the gamedir name of
"cstrike", you need to rename it).

Gamespy can (and do to my knowledge) get server lists and statistics from
the Steam Master servers, as can any other 3rd party server listing tool.

Alfred,
Will CS 1.5 be listed as a game in steam list of games?

Sorry, I mean... did I miss something???

The CS 1.5 DLL is perfectly ready just to plug-in and go ... What I used was
a standard WON install and just plugged the thing into STEAM and I can play
1.5 as much as I like on the STEAM network ...

It auth's with STEAM, and other people (when they set up a client) can also
connect to it if they wish

A screen shot with the information to show this

http://www.digifu.demon.co.uk/steamauthed.jpg

The active STEAM ID on the shot shows that its authed Via STEAM... even
though it's a 1.5 server!

The server DLL versions show that it is 1.5

CS 1.5 = 47/1.1.2.0 2738
CS 1.6 = 47/1.1.2.5/2.0.0.0 2771

If people do prefer and would like to play 1.5 then it certainly is possible
to do so with STEAM.

1.5 has already been recompiled or whatever to run under steam. This
requires no work what so ever from valves part... what this means is you can
actually see a server list on the steam browser and continue to play. I
think basically the main problem is there will be no more VAC for it, that's
all.

Game spy and others rely on WON ... Just wave goodbye to 1.5 ... It's gone.
The HLDS.exe for CS 1.5 and other mods only talks to WON and that is where
Game spy gets the listing.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] CS 1.5 servers will still
work without WON they just wont be protected from what I have seen and just
wont be able to use the in game search tool to find the servers. But there
is GameSpy and HLSW that should still be able to link players with servers
for 1.5 or 1.3 or beta. Go Have a look See.

2004-07-15 Thread Ronny Schedel
Use the user agent instead of the referrer, maybe some sort of
firewall/webwasher clears the referrer. The user agent is always
there.

RE: [hlds] Server reference and a Master Server Listing Q.

2004-07-15 Thread Napier, Kevin
basicly.. yes there are few if any fully complete, accurate and fully
current references at least that I'm aware of, I was kinda hoping someone
might respond with such as well.

Am I to understand from the lack of reponse to this part of my email
that there are no good references for HLDS?

Regarding get the server onto the master list.
I did as you suggested David - clean install - direct connection to the
outside world.
Put the server back behind the router or even in the router's DMZ and I
get nothing.

In the process of writing this email, which is now radically shorter, I
thought of something to look up and I've just spent several hours
Googling. I don't know whether it is the solution, but there has
been a firmware update for my router, which was subsquently withdrawn
cos Belkin were up to no good.
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,10413560~mode=flat~days=

I'm in the process of aquiring the firmware upgrade and will see if that
solves this issue.

I did have an issue with running the server from the command line, but
I've just realised that in all my tinkering I've chuffed the port number
that the server was starting on - so no wonder that wasn't working!! hey
ho :-/

Anyway, here's hoping the firmware update works and hopefully someone
will come up with a good reference for hlds. ;)

Incidently, what does starting hlds via the gui do differently from
starting it via the command line? I noticed that a few settings, like
the rcon password went astray when I started from the command line.

Thanks your help

Stephen

We have been running a CS server since beta 3.1 all the way back to 1999. In
the past year it has just died off dramatically. We can add some crazy mod
and it will draw players for a couple weeks but after the novelty wears off
it is back to no activity at all. Our biggest issue is that many of the
regulars, who have been around for years, began to take the game way to
seriously. If you did not use "cal" tactics then they would chastise you and
it no longer became fun to play. We vowed never to take the games that
seriously and we wont. If they don't want to have fun then we would rather
have it just sit empty.

Hi all, I have 2 counter-strike servers running on a dedicated T1 line,one

having is that no one seems to ever join the server. Is there a way to draw
players in ? I have all the latist maps and lots of the old ones, I try
changing the map cycle to what I think are maps that people like to play, but
still verry small amout of newcomers. I have a clan called The [DAM]CLAN
there are around 15 of us and we are all over 35. We have regular games
agenst eachother one Sun. and Wen. nights for one hr long each. we do not
put a pass on, and still no one seems to join. I have played Cstrike since
it was first out, when 200 servers was a lot, now there are a ton of them,
are there just to many to chose from now. when there were just a few,my
servers were full all the time.
Should I just give up on runnig them,or dose someone have a anser ??

2004-07-15 Thread Hondaman's Server
I found that people dont want to join a empty server
to just sit and wait for some one else to join. You
might want to try putting some bots on. Thats what I
did for my deathmatch server, and just set them up to
leave after a couple of real players join. This has
been the best solution that Ive found to get the ball
going on a game.

[hlds] HTTP download referer

2004-07-15 Thread Maarten van der Zwaart
This log is since the update which added the referer header.
$ grep -c Half-Life /var/log/apache/access.log
1172
$ grep Half-Life /var/log/apache/access.log | grep -c hl1://
1
Of all downloads, there was exactly one request that included the
referer header. There has been one other thread about this, but I've
seen nothing about it from Valve.
Is Valve aware of this problem? Is help needed searching for why it only
works in a few cases? Or is that already known and can we expect a
solution soon? Please let us know, I'd really like to see this feature
working. :-)

My want to try the Linux list :D

Either way you're not telling the server what map to load, so it just
sits there wondering what to do

Add +map de_dust (or other map)

To the end of the command you used to start the server

changing the map cycle to what I think are maps that people like to play, but
still verry small amout of newcomers.

Thanks
  [DAM]DARKSTAR
