RE: [hlds] DoD

2004-11-10 Thread Ray Spaulding
My guess is that you have the automatic update enabled on the box and it's
rebooting from an update or a program you have scheduled. Check your Tasks,
I'm sure you'll find something scheduled for 3AM.

Works for me :-)

Win32 OP4 hlds running on Slackware 10 via Wine is absolutely rock solid
stable.

My Win2000 box has taken to rebooting at 3am, driving me nuts as I don't
know what is causing it. My linux box has never crashed - not once.

I might mention, that I'm so sick of these low end crap routers that can't
run a week without rebooting or that have weird issues or limited
functionality, that I'm ready to fork out the bucks for a good Cisco. The
irritation factor is such that it's becoming worth $600-$800 for a good SOHO

I might also add that if they have the firmware in good shape these days,
then this model will work very well. But, you can get the wireless model for
like $60-$70 or less, I'd go for the wireless G router.

I used to have one. It came off of the shelf defective. Either that, or the
firmware was buggy. In retrospect, I now believe it was the firmware that
was crap, and not the unit itself. Some of the guys I worked with had the
same model, and all of use had problems with it rebooting itself on a
regular basis.

The number of ports you can forward is limited, and you can't assign IPs to
specific mac addresses. The reason I bought my Linksys is that by using
sveasoft or similar firmware, you can have these and many more features.

This seems to be a common problem. Netgear released a firmware a few months
ago that caused regular reboots, and dLink released a firmware that caused
reboots every 5-10 minutes. This isn't rocket science - why can't they get
their act together with the firmware? My Cisco never rebooted - it ran 24/7
for months and months.

I have a BEFSR81 version 2 and it has worked pretty good for me, though the
last firmware update for it caused me much grief such as intermittent
connectivity so I had to downgrade to the previous firmware I had before.

The latest release of the BEFSR81 is version 3.

Before my normal NAT rule I have this:
nat on $ext proto udp from 192.168.0.5 port 27015 to any -> \
  ($ext) static-port
Ref: http://openbsd.org/faq/pf/nat.html
static-port
Tells PF not to translate the source port in TCP and UDP packets.
It's the 'static-port' tag on the end that is the trick.

I was messing with my belkin pile of plastic junk again today,
forwarding ports for web, ftp and mysql, so that I can share some dev
work with a remote colleague. Anyway, I spotted a trend. The items
that are in the "virtual server" list all work exactly as they are
supposed to (ftp/www), but set up your own custom one (mysql), then it
has no interest in working properly!
This has ticked me off for long enough, so any suggestions for a

Netgear is good feature wise, but they have a limited nat table, which can

heh heh Cisco I wish.
Any thoughts on the Linksys *BEFSR41? It seems to have got a lot of
good reviews, I only need to connect two PCs and a wireless hub to it
and the traffic is only high when I push large or lots of work related
files around. The delight of a small home office :)

I would like to add to this. I use an OpenBSD box for my home
firewall/gateway. In my case the server was using port 27015 on the
internal IP. I had a NAT rule to forward that port on the external IP
to the internal IP. Now, that would seem to be all I needed to do, but
it wasn't showing up on the list. However the server could be joined by
manually connecting to my ext_IP:27015.
The problem was OpenBSD was seeing my server send out the info on port
27015 to the master servers but it was randomizing the port. So the
master list got some wacked out port number not 27015 and thus ignored
it (my guess). Thanks to a couple people on the linux list I only had
to add an extra NAT rule to force the port to remain static. Problem
solved.
But I have no idea how you would check to see if a little SOHO NAT box
like one from Linksys or Netgear is also doing that. With a shell I
have commands I can run to see what's going on.

I don't see anything wrong with this, the "Adding master server" is a very
good sign because it means your server is reaching out to the real world. I
can't ping it or try to join until tonight, I'm sure someone else will
comment before then, but I'll ping it tonight anyhow.

5) Don't go opening a whole bunch of ports. The only incoming port you need
is 27015 (or the port you specified for your server). All other ports are
outgoing ports and are psuedo-random by hlds and will be assigned by your
router.

It would probably help you more to post this in the HLDS-Linux list... ;)

Otherwise, post your network specs and netcode settings too. Are you
using any form of pingboost? Any other server slots on this machine?
