A side note, at least we don't have any AOL users on this list :/

Re: [hlds] (no subject)

2010-05-17 Thread Matt Stanton
Yes, they would. Generally the people finally register that something
is up. A lot of people with our business email in their address book
have had the same issues (with a link to pretty much the exact same
site), and it seems like they got the hint and stopped clicking on the
links. Hopefully it's the same kind of hack and people here will catch
on, too.

BTW, if you want to prevent this from happening to you, go to all of
your webmail login account pages and click 'Log out', and use an actual
email client to get and reply to your mail (you can go the extra mile
and delete all your cookies, or the cookies for the sites you use for
email to absolutely prevent the exploit). If the cookie doesn't exist,
or is invalid, then the 'hack' doesn't work. I use thunderbird for all
of my email accounts, one of which is a gmail address, and haven't had
this issue, even though I did click on one of the links before realizing
what it was. I'm also not sure that gmail is affected by this, but have
noticed an awful lot of hotmail and yahoo accounts being exploited this
way. It's always possible that gmail is affected, but I just haven't
noticed any of these emails coming from gmail accounts.

Re: [hlds] (no subject)

2010-05-17 Thread Matt Stanton
I think these emails are a type of 'cookie hack', or at least they
appear to be. I wouldn't know without looking at the source of the
pages that the links reference, and I'm just not into trying to track it
down. The short explanation would be that the linked page utilizes a
redirect to a page that sits on a site that uses the same 'msn',
'yahoo', or 'google' domain, which allows it to pull the login cookie
the user has for their gmail, yahoo, or hotmail account. It doesn't
allow them to really take over the account, but it would let them send
emails as that user.

So, it's another instance of "don't click on the shit you get in your
email". This person probably doesn't even know it is going on, and they
are also probably not in any danger of having their account completely
hijacked. I'm also not an expert of any sort when it comes to hacking,
so I am probably also wrong. :)

Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is 'be careful', and that the
person probably doesn't deserve to be booted from the list. I just hope
they have learned something from this.
