Re: [hlds] 32 Player TF2 Hardware

2010-09-03 Thread Don Williams
I run a Q6600 with 2gb ram and server 2003 500fps with no issues with 96
slots.
Also got a 8 slot NS2 server running on it as well.. Not even Xeon class
processor :-(
If I had the money I'd build one like I did the other day dual xeon quads
with 6 o ram and 15k RAM SAS drives.

mrsleeper, I'd like to hear his explanation. I have similar feelings. If
people want to modify operating systems and do whatever, they are welcome to
and I think it is pretty cool.

It is even more unnessecary than network rate restrictions. Forcing clients
to a 100hz update rate when their ping jitter is nearly 50ms on a
second-rate DSL connection and they may be playing at 30fps is incredibly
stupid. That is another discussion for another time. It seems as if these
Xeon systems are definitely up to the task.

The server stores its settings in the file: %APPDATA%/Natural Selection
2/server.xml

If the file does not exist, it will create a default copy the first time it
is run.

The server options can be changed in the file manually, or they can be
specified individually on the command line (those changes will be saved by
default.)

Optional command line settings are:

-file [path] (allows you to specify a different configuration file for
server settings)
-name [name] (specifies the server name to be shown in the server browser)
-map [name] (specifies the map to load)
  -ip [address]
  -port [number] (default is 27015)
  -limit [number]
-lan [1 or 0, or true/false] (specifies how/if this map shows up in the
master server list - default is false)
  -password [optional]
-save [1 or 0, or true/false] - (specifies whether to save out command
line overrides - default is true)

Examples:

  Server.exe -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false
  Server.exe -file "c:\my servers\config.xml" -map ns2_rockdown -lan true
-save false

Re: [hlds] Bladecenter anything worth?

Intel also offers a great blade solution as well with failover support.

If you want to go the SAN route with automatic failover of the Cluster, ESXi
is not the solution, you would need to go with the VSphere solution to get
all the bells and whistles you would need. What you basically asking for is
the feature set of a High Availability Datacenter solution that ESXi was
simply not put out there to fill.

As far as cost point, you need the enclosure and out 4 blades to make it
cost effective over a series of 1U servers, as a warning when you're putting
the funds together for the hardware. I don't know any recent research into
the cost comparisons I am going of data from about 3 years ago.

HP has a very good blade solution (C-class) if I remember.

As a side not, I have tested SRCDS inside a VM under VSphere, didn't have
lag issues, but again, this was a controlled environment where I can test
the VPS when it had the CPU/memory resources it actually required to support
the solution. Mileage may actually vary.

Hi.

Thanks for the reply, i could really use that. I will do some more research
for this, and if its affordable, ill go for it. If not, i will keep with my
1U/2U rackservers. At my primary work, we do have a big IBM bladecenter, i
may ask my boss about the power consumption

Thanks again.

How about instead or saying go to the IRC, you post the information for it.
Atleast you post would contain value, instead of the fluff that spammed my

It wouldn't take much to delist every single West Coast server, I'm sure it
would be more than possible to do it with a simple 10mbit box. For instance
at one point I was able to view my server in the server browser just fine,
now my test server is well... Unknown to the masses, than again this only
started happening a couple weeks ago. I just checked now and I still don't
see it. This is however most likely unrelated to your issue DWN.

The issue with allowing people to import blocklists is that they will
rush on Google and use the first blocklist they find. That blocklist
will most likely be full of servers that $RANDOM_LUSER added to get back
at $SERVER_OWNER for banning them for mic spamming.

If you are not running HiResTimer or srcdsfpsboost, then you are not
seeing the true amount of CPU usage in task manager (assuming a windows
server). I kinda doubt that valve included any code to trip the windows
high resolution timer, but if they had, you would instantly see a huge
jump in cpu usage, since task manager would then be able to report the
actual cpu usage of srcds. I do not believe that a HighResTimer or
fpsbooster service is required in Windows Server 2008+, Windows Vista,
or 7, but Windows Server 2003 and below need to have one running to get
true cpu stats involving srcds.

We haven't noticed a CPU usage jump from srcds since the update that
made bandwidth usage more efficient. The likely culprit would be that
valve changed something that caused a plugin to get borked and use more
CPU (this is only a wild theory, and may not even be technically
feasible, but it's the only thing I can come up with).

I have a thread that has been up since the whole MOTD crash has been
going on. It was fixed for a while, I bumped it. You can see some of the
crashes that I have had in there. You guys should post there too with

Whenever an update happens you should disable all plug-ins. Run the server
for an hour (no crashes), then turn plug-ins on one at a time.

When we get big updates, this is what happens. Plug-ins need updating.

With the recent announcement from IW to not include dedicated server files

There has been pressure from the CoD clan and online gaming community, this
is now being backed by some of the big names in the gaming world like
Gamespy, IGN and Dice. As other Admins may or may not be aware of this more

It has been a problem about a week or two before the patch was issued. I'm
uncertain as to why... Maybe Valve made a patch to VAC which caused certain

clients to have issues? Or there's a hacker that's targeting VAC?

I use a linksys router to connect to the Internet. Maybe NAT has something
to do with it? Has anyone else experienced problems when they are connected

directly to their DSL/Cable modem?
