I second that...I mean as long as this game has been out and we still do not
have an anti-cheat...stop making maps...stop f'in with bots and get us an
anti cheat. Please?

Is CS 1.6 just going to be left to wither and die?

Can we get a clarification on this issue?

I ask because the 2 rendering methods for HL & Source are totally
different and would require completely seperate detection methods
imho, I could be wrong.

So what the deal?

If VAC2 does not deal directly with HL based games, for crying out

A fix for this is released, run hldsupdatetool again to get it (only the
engine binaries have been updated). You MUST get this update (you will
update to v29 for Linux, v30 for win32) otherwise people will get "Bad
Challenge" errors when try to connect to your server.

RE: [hlds] When will the "nosteam" hacks be fixed?

2004-12-15 Thread J Marcus
I don't buy that...There is no reason they can't comment on this one way or
another. IMO that is what this forum is for. I think enough people have
legitimate concerns and they should acknowledge that. I mean we have put up
with a lot of shit running dedicated servers over the past few years. I
think we deserve more respect then they are giving. It would be nice to know
if they even have a plan or if they don't think they can ever get a handle
on it at least tell us that so we can get a good third party AC going. The
silence is just bizarre to me.

Everyone calm down a minute and think about the overall scope of things.
Valve is known for creating at least one, if not several of the most awesome
games we have ever played. Development has ALWAYS been plagued by missed
deadlines, stolen code, and more missed deadlines.

Should a new authentication scheme + anticheat measure been included with
HL2 - of course! But this is Valve, and they are probably working on
something so revolutionary they can't possibly release it in conjunction
with the game it's made for. Even if they posted about it here, we all know
any deadline hard or soft would be extended and extended.

We will get something later rather than sooner, it will work for the most
part, and we will be happy. It the freakin waiting that has always killed
us!

have a open discussion about it on this mailing list. Not looking to go into

y go thru all that?? You are not going to stop the haxors. I hate to keep
going back to it but Cheating Death worked! Sure the losers worked around it
but all he did was update CD client and they had to start over. The losers
spent more time trying to bypass it then he did updating CD. I know someone
could figure out a way to get CD or something similar and effective going
with steam.

STEAM is broken

VAC is Broken

Because STEAM is Broken even if VAC worked, it would be a waste of time

And in any case, Valves stupid detect now and ban later has no effect
whilst the STEAM_ID system is broken, since most hackers will have
changed STEAM_ID's well before VAC bans come into force under the
current system.

Why in gods name its difficult to set things up so peoples STEAM_ID's
that are used in servers can only be autheticated against a database
that Valve has access to AND have the database set to only allow
people on to servers who have legitamately set up STEAM Accounts is
beyond me???

Was this STEAM_ID issued by Valve?
Does the STEAM_ID match the details of the account in our database?
Y let player onto server
N kick player off server

It is such a stupidly simple process, and would allow VAC to at least
have a chance at keeping hackers off servers.

Hell, if they are really hacking into the system, you could do all
checking via Server/Valve communications only.

Have the HLDS send the STEAM_ID, if its valid, player stays, if it is
not, server is informed and player kicked.

The Server (so far) always knows what the STEAM_ID is, even if Valve
does not, at least within a few minutes of dickhead player joining the
server.

If you need more verification and security you can do this:

Create a hash from the username, password, STEAM_ID & a Valve supplied
alogorithm which can change at any time with any STEAM Update.

When a player joins a server, the player sends the server their hash,
then the server requests the hash for that STEAM_ID from Valve and if
they don't match then the server rejects the players connection.

Moreover, when the system gets hacked, do an algorithm change and use
the wonderful STEAM system to push the change out.

Valve have the great update system, why the hell won't you use it??

Do Daily updates, that will fuck people up well and truly who try to
fuck with your system.

You can further harden this system if you wish, google "public key
encryptions schemes" and find out how everybody else who likes to be
secure does it from crying out loud!

and I know I am not the only one with the problem. WTF am I to do?

After restarting one of my CS servers Wednesday I started getting this error
when someone tries to connect:

Dropped Player from server.
Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID Ticket(server was unable to connect to
the authentication server, 27).

I have tried just about everything I could think of to correct it. I've got
several other servers on the box that are still working fine. Some of the
things I've tried doing are:

Stop using metamod
Change the port
Change the IP
Delete clientregistry.blob
Delete installrecord.blob
Leaving the server up for several hours.
Leaving the server down for several hours.
Use a completely fresh install
Create a new steam account

Now I restarted a DoD server and it's getting the same error.

Anyone have any ideas?

If it's version 18, then it doesn't work. Did an update, and all I get is
this in hldsupdatetool:

Verifying: f:\css\reslists\counter-strike source shared content\exclude.lst
Failed to create directory f:\css\reslists\counter-strike: source, Win32
Error 2
67 "Katalognamnet r felaktigt." // Translated "Catalougename is invalid"

My servers has been down for 2h now and i cant start them again, then I get
this error in server console:
Failed to load server.dll
Failed to load server binary
Can't start game, no valid server.dll loaded

Sorry if this has been raised before - but would it help the community
if Valve established a small (20-50) group of server owners for pretests
of updates under "real-world" conditions? I'm not sure if it would be
possible to do so, i.e., server-only updates without client updates, or
issues from clients hopping from beta to real servers - but I don't know
enough about the actual programming ramifications.

I know there are people on this list willing to give their time/energy
to vetting out updates so that the larger masses are less impacted by
them.

Anyway, just a thought.

Mike

I have a server running. It has AMX mod and superhero. But there's a huge
problem. The maximum slots for the server is 12 , but when it reaches to
ten, and another 11th person tries to join, the server automatically kicks
him/her. How do I fix this???
