See, in the olden days we could have settled this with swords and speers,
but now with all these "laws" in place we're pretty much at the mercy of the
developer.

I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about don't post saying its
coming
three days in a row, tell us its delayed once, the next day just not say
anything about it at all, thurs comes and says its coming, and now backs
down again. If that isn't a bit disorganized I don't know what is.

I have an opportunity to install Windows server 2003 on the box running my
HL server. I've ran it with Win2000, then WinXP (and could not tell any
difference). How many here have used 2003, and have you had any issues? The
reason I want to use WinServer2003 is that I have a license to use it
through school, and it frees up my XP copies to run on other computers that
are currently running Win2000.

IOW, is there any reason not to us WinServer2003 on my HL server box?

RE: [hlds] 100 player slot server spec?

2005-09-09 Thread Philipp G.

From what I've heard from others, it seems to be directly related to the AMD

processors themselves (although the linux srcds surely isn't helping
either). I can't give a direct performance related comparison, but I know of
many people that have done so; the intel based systems showed more stability
when it came to source (remember, we're talking source here, I'm not bashing
opterons for other uses), and, in addition, windows 2k3 does seem to prove a
more stable environment (however, to my knowledge, the benchmarks were
conducted seperately, so I can't say the intel+linux is better than the
amd+win2k3 or whatnot), minus the occaisional memory referencing error that
we have on some of our dedicated boxes (bump: if anyone knows a fix for

In reply to Tef:

Yes I was referring to tic rate, high tic rate servers use much more cpu
resources.

I can only correlate to what we use; we run Dual 2.8Ghz Xeon 64bit machines
with windows 2003 server as an OS. We use an irc eggdrop to be able to get
more server fps out of the HL engine, we tried flash apps and hlbooster in
the past but up to this date I prefer eggdrop as it gives the most stable
fps.

HL servers above ~16slots that use high tic rates and server fps; use
between 16 and 24% cpu on our servers.

U say u wants to run 4 24 player servers on high tic rates.
So then u would need a system that's a bit more powerful, then a dual xeon
2.8 GHz.

I would go with AMD Opteron, they can handle more load continuasly before
performance drops and they have a lower internal latency, also u can put
dual core opteron cpu's (these are really 2 cpu's in one cpu package) in
the
same motherboard as single core opterons.

If u were to go with Xeons, and u would like to upgrade your system to the
upcoming dual core xeon's, u would also need to buy another motherboard.

So besides more performance and lower latency, u also get a more scalable
system if u are going to use AMD.

We bought our Xeon machines last year, in the assumption we could stick
dual
core xeon's in them once they were available, unfortunately intel is going
to use a different chipset to support their dual core cpu's (so much for
scalability).

If I were u I would be looking for a server with one dual core Opteron 265
or 270 in it.
It would be enough to run your 4 servers, and u could later put another
dual
core Opteron cpu in it, so u can run even more servers on the system.

Supermicro sells pre-build Intel and Amd systems, aswell as barebone
systems
(barebone: server case with installed motherboard and accessories, so u
only
need to drop in the cpu's, ram and harddrive/s).
U could contact Supermicro www.supermicro.com and ask them if they know
about any supermicro authorized system integrator in the UK.

In reply to Phil:
Is this memory leak only in combination Linux Opteron, or also with Windows
Opteron?
And how fast does it leak, Could it be prevented by resetting the servers
every night?

I'm not sure what you mean by "boosted". I would like high performance,
yes.
I am thinking of 66 tick rate servers if that what you mean?
The aim is to run 4 x 24 man cs:S servers on there.

Also, here's a potential problem. I would want pre built and with the same

Yeah depends what kind of sweet spot you're talking about ;). I'd
probably say 12-14 is pretty sweet performance wise, and we don't ever
do any servers over 20 slots. More than than probably 18 they start to
deteriorate slowly, but having said that they're also easier to keep
going number of players on server wise, as often 10/12 slot servers
fluctuate too much in player numbers actually on server.

The average is less than 3 players per server across the 18,000 CSS

So wtf is with these guys bitching about servers that are not full?

LOL...I can't resist this one. :D Your fresh out of high school here
kid?
They teach you that in home room. Flaming aside, you can't POSSIBLY host
200
slots on that server with what your screenshot shows. You're a dreamer
kiddo. It's GSPs that give Valve customers a place to play so it'd be
nice
if they'd cater to us for a change. I've got plenty of comprehension of
the
Valve HLDS and SRCDS to know what it can and can't do. I've got a few
dual
Xeons kicking around and various P4 setups that say you can't host 358
slots
of ANY Valve game on it. 200 slots my white hairy old ass kid. Pipe is
not
the issue here and your "rate" edits you claim has zero to do with a
CPU's
ability to run a single-threaded program like HLDS on it to your
day-dream
specs. Maybe you just fired a bunch of empty LAN servers to try to
impress
us here but the fact plainly remains youngster. That box is showing 35
players on it and it's at 48% CPU. And for the sake of agument you can't
run
this particular program with load balancing to another machine even in
the
next rack-slot above it without inducing the lag that you claim you
don't
have. I know damn good and well they don't make a single processor
computer
that can take that load in this game server.
Your flames are baseless, childish and make you look even more of what I
claimed to begin with. Just some punk kid out of high school or college
thinking he can change the world. Well I got my oldest about out of high
school soon so I'm familiar with the sharp tongues you runts have
nowadays
cuz the government frowns on us beating your ass like you probably
deserve.
Simply take your pipe dreams and your visions of fame to something you
might
happen to know something about cuz it's obviously not HLDS hosting by a
long
shot.

what an impressive pile of feces you are.

what you don't see is how i am not dead in the water when i have 200+
players.

nor do you have enough comprehension of my server's capabilities to
comprehend load balancing.

nor do you know shit about clocks or the "importance" of the clock
display to the game servers.

but then again, since i don't "rent servers" and try to make money off
VALVe's back, I dont give a fuck about you or your dumb fucking tard ass
comments.

my vote is for VALVe and all other game vendors to sue all game hosters
for royalties.

Those of you using Serverdoc to monitor your servers probably already know
that the free version unexpectedly expired on 01 Jan 05.
The author is away until 06 Jan 05. Oh well, it's free.
I like it because it has the ability to restart crashed or locked-up
servers.
What are some alternatives to Serverdoc for monitoring HLDS servers?

Or maybe I'm just burned out from the years of profuse ignorance and
ineptitude. I got clients screeming in my ear about all these game issue.
I'm pretty sure my patience, respect and tenderness are things of the past
at this point. When I see that the game all these people paid for is
finally
completed with the features they're suppose to have in them working
correctly and the issues that befall the GSPs and game admins addresses I
might then become a bit more inclined to not look at Valve with disgust.

Now, onto logic, sure there are many people that want to hack, and won't

Subject: [hlds] Long Time CS Admin request to Valve, please change CSS
Default Port
Long Time CS Admin request to Valve, please change CSS Port
I have been running a very busy CS Server for several years, on the
standard
27015 Port.
Now I see that you have also assigned CSS to the standard port of 27015.
I notice that if I move the CSS Server off of the Standard port I get a
tiny fraction of the player traffic that it gets on the default port.
Can I beg you guys with the next patch to please, please move CSS (and
HL2) to a different default port address?? 27020 perhaps ??
I hate to move all my regulars from CS to a different port address, when
they all have it saved as a Favorite.
Since CS:S is new, it makes sense for it to have a slightly different
default port than the older more established game.
Thanks for listening!!

Hiya,
I don't want to start a big flame, but im just really puzzled, this has
been
niggling away for the last few weeks and I thought id see if anyone else
has
any thoughts or experiences that may help.
Basically the servers in question are these:
3x dual amd mp 2400's, 1.5gb ram.
3x p4's 1gb ram, 3ghz, 2.8ghz and a 2.67ghz.
The p4 singles seem to be running circles around the duals, ive performed
several tests getting the boxes as full as possible.
Dual mp 2400: 52 players, spread across 4 servers. 12man, 20man, 12man,
18man.
The 20man and 18man are running metamod 1.17 and amx 0.9.7, and vac. The
other 2 servers are just running vac.
With this setup the cpu load is at 100% constant.
P4 3Ghz: 35players, spread across 2 servers. 14man, 20man, 12man.
The 20man is full running metamod 1.17 and clanmod 1.82b1 and vac. The
other
2 servers are running metamod 1.17 and amx 0.9.7, and vac
With this setup the cpu load is at 30-42%
All servers were running the same map. As a cross reference the server on
the p4 (20man) was using 20-25%. The 20man on the AMD dual was using 40-45%
of total system cpu.
I need to do further testing on this to get more extensive figures, but
from
early investigations despite having 2 cpu's each clocked at 2ghz (from
memory), against a 3ghz single chip its being run circles around. IF the p4
figure are to go by, if I was happy with 100% cpu load, then I could have
70-80 players running off this box to get the same cpu useage as 52players
on the dual!
Now, the other duals are all having a similar story, the p4's are doing
exceptionally well, even the 2.67 seems to be able to support more players
than the dual.
What do the rest of you think ?

Mike - if you are going to make up stuff, atleast try to have something to
back it up sir!
P4 has multiple branches in the CPU line. The most recent branches include
P4 Extreme Edition - -more or less targetted at the high-end gaming PC /
Platform. It does include Hyperthreading. It is built on the 130nm die
size
Most P4 branches do NOT include Hyperthreading. They have varying die
sizes
, level 2 and level 1 caches.
XEON was built with dual processor servers in mind. XEON includes HT. It
is
built on a 90nm die -- and it IS NOT a P3. XEON was initially based off the
P4 architecture, then split.. and then they brought the P4 Extreme back
into
line or very similiar to the XEON.
P4 = Workstations, gaming platforms
XEON = Servers

RE: [hlds] Bandwidth woes and where to colo?

2004-06-04 Thread Philipp G.
The Planet and ServerMatrix, to my knowledge, are both operated by the same
company, The Planet's bandwidth is more quality geared, while ServerMatrix
more value, but don't get me wrong, ServerMatrix offers a great
performance/price ratio with adequate hardware available for lease.

I know the other guys said The Planet, but this company is part of 'em,
and their dedicated server deals are definitely worth checking out.
http://www.servermatrix.com/servers.html
We went with one of these rather than colo. The hardware was comparable,
but we ended up with more bandwidth than the colo plans offered, and at
a cheaper price. Service and support have been awesome in the few months
we've been with 'em.
There was a weird temporary outage today though. Both Server Matrix and
The Planet fell off the face of the earth for a few minutes, then
everything came back. First outage we've had with 'em though.
