Subject: Re: [hlds] Mandatory TF2 update released

Agreed.

It's one thing to make such a drastic change, it's another to re-route
40-50% of all TF2 traffic away from every non-valve server on the planet in
one fell swoop. If this change stands as-is, there's not a single server
operator on the planet that will be able to launch a new vanilla server (or
almost any kind of server, for that matter), because unless a server
already has a following, it will never be able to build up the momentum
when less than half the player base will even be able to find it.

Here's the thing, folks:

It's been proven time and time again that Mods extend the lifetime of a
game (look at what Day Z did last year for Arma 2). The diversity of TF2 is
what has kept it going all these yearsyet a change like this actively
steers half (or more) of the current playerbase, and probably the vast
majority of *every* new player AWAY from ever finding a custom map, mod, or
game mode.

If "official valve vanilla" is all you want - then this change is wonderful
for you (and you should have that "option"), but should this remain the
"default" setting that every client is now set to, Valve has hastened along
the death of the very game they are trying to protect.

Why would anyone even bother creating a map for TF2 now? How would it ever
see any kind of significant traffic?

How about custom game modes? We were hosting a "King of the Hill" server
(using custom maps made for that game mode) for over a year BEFORE it
became an official game mode with official maps - think anyone will or
would be able to throw up a new server or game mode under these conditions?

I think we all understand why Valve thinks they had to do this - all the
"Pinion Profiteers" made them think this was necessary - but make no
mistake, these were problems that were CREATED by quickplay in the first
place, so in one fell swoop, Valve has not only created the problem, but
they have used the same system that created it to essentially throw out all
the "good" servers with the bad. Any non-valve server that does not already
have a significant amount of "regulars" will now die on the vineand
there won't be any new non-valve servers going up to replace them.

It's a shame, folks. This change effectively takes the "community" out of
TF2, and turns it into just another random, casual, anonymous FPS.

It's was a rarity already to have a game that was 7+ years old that still
had new clans and communities forming around it - but a change like this
will make it all but impossible for any new TF2 communities to even get
started.

Re: [hlds] Quickplay Frustration

2012-01-07 Thread Stephen Yates
I am not sure why they are disconnecting, but I will check to see if that is
occurring. We have been running vanilla servers since the game came out and
nothing has changed. About the only thing we do is change our map rotations
occasionally, otherwise everything is vanilla.

Anyway, I guess we will just have to "guess" what is going on. Thanks
Valve!

Personally, QuickPlay as only helped grow our community. A few players
end up finding our servers, they like that we have admins playing with
them to make sure things stay civilized, they become regular players
and come back.

Furthermore, ever since Valve announced they had taken measure against
bad servers, maybe it's just a coincidence, but we're having a lot
more QuickPlay players than before.

Now, I love the server browser and I would hate to see it go. I never
liked how finding a server was handled with L4D, but TF2 offers the
best of both world as it's up to the player to decide how it wants to
search for servers. I'm not saying it can't be improved, for example,
it would be nice to have an option to "Play a custom map", so that
players could seek servers using map outside the regular rotation, but
overall the system is working well for us.

As for the question on the original post. If you are going downward
fast, I'm guessing that it's an issue with players leaving your server
too fast. If I remember correctly, when a player connects it subtracts
15 points from your score. You gain 1 points, up to 45, for every
minutes the player remains. Short of asking players why they don't
stay longer, there is no tool to know why they don't remain.

It's hard to imagine it is dying. I mean according to Steam Stats, there
are more people playing now than there were two years ago. More servers
could be an issue I suppose.

And yes, to all you 32p server owners out there, can I just say
ttpt! :D

I think the main issue is that tf2 is slowly dying. Every day there are
fewer players and more servers. With quickplay it is difficult to make your
server unique and thus people will just click quick play instead of
favoriting your server. Also 32 player servers, need I say more? Lol.

[hlds] [TF2] Multiple Servers, one set of files

2010-01-16 Thread Stephen Yates
A couple of months ago, I discovered through this mailing list, it was
possible to run multiple servers off of one set of files. We run 5 TF2
servers and the thought of having to only run one update as well as saving
on our resources was a pretty sexy idea. So, I took three of the five and
launched them from one set of files. I created unique server.cfg files for
them as well as unique mapcycle.txt and pointed to unique MOTD files and
after a few initial kinks, they have been running swimmingly. The only
problem we seem to have is during updates.

We update one of the three servers via TCAdmin and then restart the other
two. Everything seems to be working fine. the versions all change to the
correct version, the correct config files are firing, etc. but for some
reason, the update does not always take. For example, during the last
update, the "Fixed the Gunboats absorbing damage from the Soldier's grenade
kill taunt" did not take. We kept testing it and the Soldier was still
immune. The only thing we could do to fix it was to delete the .dll file,
run the update again, and then restart all the servers. This was the second
time we have had to do this and it seems to work, but it is driving me nuts
because it does not make any sense to me. The only thing I can think of is
that we should stop all instances of the servers running of the server
files, then update one of them and then restart them all.

Thoughts?

Although I do see it on the Steam News page. I guess I need to stop relying
on this list to tell me when we are getting updates.

I don't know if there is something wrong with my servers, but they took
another update. Last time this happened, there was an update that was not
announced. Could just be a fluke, but if your servers are empty, you might
want to check.

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Dedicated Server Available

2009-10-27 Thread Stephen Yates
Well, I got it up and running and can see it in hlsw but my TCADMIN setup is
wonky as I can't reset it from there. I had to launch the game from the
remote server and it set it up with the main ip addy (which is different
from the one I assigned in TCADMIN). Oh well. Its working for now. Will
work on it tomorrow.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Mine is running using same command line as l4d (except I'm starting with the

map c5m1_waterfront). Same server.cfg. I can see it in hlsw just fine, but
it won't respond to connection attempts. It will respond to a bad rcon
password, but not to a correct one.

As an aside, I notice a steam client update was recently
released..."Steamworks improvements for upcoming titles"...nothing about
l4d2 demo...

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Dedicated Server Available

2009-10-27 Thread Stephen Yates
Should I be able to see it at this point in HLSW? Added new server.cfg and
from TCADMIN it looks fine in Server Status and Information but it is not
showing up in HLSW. Normal?

My (Windows) servers seem to be responding normally to A2S_INFO, using
server.cfg files copied straight over from L4D.

However, I see a separate bug -- rcon commands (including "stats", "status",

and cvars) are accepted and can change the state of the server, but they
only return the log line as a response, and not the appropriate information.

e.g, if I send "rcon status", it responds only with something like:

L 10/27/2009 - 23:07:38: rcon from "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:x": command "status"

Must be, seems everyone has this issue.
I was wondering myself.
