I know this isn't the case since the email server uses the same dns server and I haven't had any problems with that. It was a good idea though. In fact, for safe measure, I restarted the dns server and it had no effect on my HLDS servers. =\ HoundDawg http://www.phpGamingSite.com http://www.unitedadmins.com http://www.unitedadmins.com/hlbp - Original Message - From: Bryan Socha [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 22, 2001 6:53 PM Subject: RE: [hlds] WON Fixed Yet? After further analysis, I've discovered that (like a previous report from another admin) the console locks up about the same time the server is not available. I try typing stuff into the console and nothing, like it's locked up. I'll have to assume this is because HLDS's sockets are waiting for a timeout with one of the WON servers or something. After a few minutes, the console works again and the commands I previously typed show up in the console and are processed. The server then shows online again. Only to repeat the process in a few more minutes. =\ HoundDawg http://www.phpGamingSite.com http://www.unitedadmins.com http://www.unitedadmins.com/hlbp - Original Message - From: HoundDawg [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 22, 2001 5:24 PM Subject: [hlds] WON Fixed Yet? Valve (Eric, Erik, Yahn), Did you fix the WON servers yet? Last I heard was that they were going to get cleared up over a few days. Well, my servers had problems keeping players the past 2 weekends and now here it is Monday and my TFC servers remain unplayable. Why? Players can see my server, then connect (which may cause problems at times due to some timeouts) and then play for maybe a few minutes to only get dropped. I have wasted too much time trying to track this down. Here are my observances: 1) HLDS console shows no errors. It's not even crashing because it doesn't have a chance to, I guess. 2) HLDS console shows that users are dropping due to timeouts. 3) Server's Internet connection is rock solid on a DS3. I verified this so many ways. No hiccups and no port floods. 4) Situation happens on all latest beta patches. 5) No AdminMOD installed or anything else that could be causing problems. 6) System resources are barely touched with nearly 1 GB free memory. 7) CPU processors are hardly used with peaks of 5% during map changes. =\ 8) There is nothing else on the server that can be causing this problem. This has been a very frustrating month dealing the the problems that plague 4108x. I've lost many regulars and even my own guild members keep wondering why other servers around don't have the problem that I'm experiencing. I really don't have a clue except that the problem with the HLDS servers are definately not on my end. All I ask, is if you need any information from me to help fix this and whether you have some sort of timeframe? Any other fellow admins experiencing these problems? All of those that I was aware of that had the same problems have dropped their HLDS servers and have moved on to other games. I'd rather not go there though. RE: Where do resource and other files go?
Occassionally the mapper has some other directories in mind.. Look for the readme or install file in the map archive.. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2001 1:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Where do resource and other files go? I'm adding several maps to my server, and I have the following files: *.BSP *.WPT *.WAD *.WAV *.BMP *.TGA I know where to put the BSP and WAD files. I think the WAV files go in HALF-LIFE\VALVE\SOUND. What about the BMP and TGA files? Where do they go?

I can only think of one response THWACK! -Original Message- From: Eric Hall [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 9:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Reaching for the bootstraps Hey, y'all, I just thought I'd let you all know that I've reached a point right now where I've let gaming and everything related (including especially adminning of servers) pretty much take over my life, in almost every aspect--replacing not only more typical social interaction but even so far as a job, etc. It's kind of stupid, but it's easy to do because it's fun, often challenging, and because there's really a *community* you're a part of. Regardless, almost like an alcoholic I've reached rock bottom, and I'm taking this opportunity, somewhat involuntarily, to step away from the gaming community altogether. Now's just the time I have to make that step. I know I've relied on a lot of y'all--including some of you Valve employees--for answers and help on a lot of different subjects, and for that I thank you. I also know I've gotten pretty harsh/sharp with a lot of you, and for that I'm sorry. I really don't mean to be an asshole, but I let it come out like that way too much, often with very little filtering going on before I hit the Send button. Yeah, sometimes it was deserved, but most often it wasn't, and regardless it was wrong. I'll be unsubscribing from these lists as soon as I can get listadmin to do its thing, but for future reference, if y'all ever need to get ahold of me for something, I can almost always be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or *always* (assuming MS doesn't go out of business any time soon and public libraries don't go offline, heh) at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Y'all take care and try not to let this game eat too much into your life. Some lessons you have to learn for yourself, and I regret that this has to be one of them. Good bye, good luck, and, well, I guess good game would be appropriate ;) Later, Eric (the Deacon remix) http://www.firekite.com
RE: Server Stalls - why?
I had 1 correct dns server and 1 incorrect one.. If the correct one was overloaded or went down, I couldn't resolve to won auth -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 5:51 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Server Stalls - why? No, it's not. I already checked that - suspend is disabled, hard drives don't spin down, monitor doesn't blank, screen savers are disabled. Every now and then my server will stall. It will just sit there, unresponsive. If I go to the console and press the Enter key, it starts working again. Here is a screen shot: http://www.geocities.com/ooksserver/srvstall.jpg You can see the entry at 13:10:52. Then nothing for 42 minutes, when I found it and press the enter key. You can see the blank line caused by my pressing the enter key, and you can also see how the server started working again as if nothing had happened. My maps cycle every 30 minutes, it didn't even cycle the maps, but kept playing the same map with 15 minutes still left on it. I've seen this before, this time I was able to grab a screen shot. What causes this? When it is stalled, no one can join, I can't even rcon into it. Any ideas? - Welcome to Ooks Pit of Death! New map cycle! More bizzarre maps for your fragging pleasure!
