Then wouldn't the perfect setup be that this
doesn't allow the server operator to use the command bind, change this
restrict setting and not use quit, and just put your settings back to
the way they were on a change of server?

Not this. This is

no monthly fee is that fact that we fork out for their servers.

It shouldn't be limited to certain commands.

Clients should have the right to choose not to have settings imposed on them
against their will, but this shouldn't be default behaviour - as this
command has only come about due to abuse.

For those of us running public servers with the aim of allowing the
community to enjoy the game (and subsequently helping Valve's bottom line by
making CS a huge game), I (and I'm sure others) would appreciate if this
command was off by default, as people abusing rates and interp settings are
already ruining public play.

Just remember Valve, so many games have failed because no one would run
servers - don't forget whose support you need to prolong your product life
cycle.

Abuse or purpose. On a warcraft mod server you can have your weapon
dropped by players of a certain race. Don't fancy getting killed? Well
just turn on this CVar and nothing will happen.

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source and Source Engine Update Released - slowhacking begone!

2006-11-17 Thread Scott Pettit
I would say there's been a deluge of complaints regarding admins running
around doing things like unbind all on clients, or causing them to run
exploits of something along those lines. It wouldn't make sense for Valve
to spend time coding something without a reason to motivate them into doing
this.

Certainly with rate forcing on our servers - we were banning anyone who used
any method to get around the rates. _All_ of the players on our servers are
on some form of broadband, and thus there is no reason they should not be
using at the least rate 2, and a high cmd/update rate, as well as having
interp set to 0.01. Again as I said before though, if users don't want us
forcing our rates on them then that's fine, but we don't wish for them to be
on our non-profit, self funded (well into the range of 5 digits by myself)
servers, which we run with the aim of providing _DECENT_ servers [read: no
rating].

Just as it's the users choice not to have our rates shoved on them, it's our
choice not to have their rates shoved on us - and they're welcome to play
elsewhere if they are dissatisfied with our terms. However with this
setting being on by default we really don't have any choice but to remove
all rate forcing - which is only motivation to start encouraging the 7554
players seen in the last week to play something else.

With Warcraft it wouldn't be difficult to have it check if the client has it
turned on and then kick them with a message telling them why. However with
this on by default it means everyone gets kicked, and your average user
isn't going to figure this out. And yes, some prior notice would have been
nice - I had to drop everything to deal with the sudden banning of all the
users playing at the time.

This update is hell. Instead of helping all of use fight against
cheaters, raters, intepers and all that carp it just made our job ten
times harder coz all those lil tools we use to adjust settings on a
client so the ass holes out there can't cheat and so the rest of us can
have a nice lag free gaming experience just got broken. (that is an
assumption. i've just got up to see this and i was gonna take the day off)

In all honesty i'm about 10 seconds away from shutting down my community

Hopefully they are doing it this way to make people aware quickly of the
setting. By putting it to a default of 0 originally, most people would
probably miss out on the setting.

I don't agree with how they did it, but I can understand some of the logic
behind it now.

I'm a HL2 player and only play several well known (to me) servers. I
haven't really seen anybody abuse admin privs. Is this problem really that
rampant? The worst I have done is slap or beacon a person who was annoying.

1. Valve forum moderator towing the company line, enough said.

2. If server operators and plugin creators supposedly brought this upon
ourselves, why haven't we brought the 1001 other things we have actually
requested upon ourselves?

3. Exactly how often has the player who has had their configs messed with,
hasn't done something which meant they had it coming to them in any case?

4. What exactly is the major cause of issues with Counter-Strike:Source as
things currently stand? Is it a few errant server operators who fiddle with
players settings or is it:

Cheats
Players who cannot by hit because they have manipulated their rates to make
them unhittable or refuse to use decent rates despite having 5ms pings and
broadband connections
Players who refuse to get flashed
Players who can see through smoke
Players who can see through transparent walls that the source engine allows
Players who hit you more than a second after you have disappeared around the
corner
33 tickrate servers being considered by Valve as the acceptable default
server setup
Most default CS SRCDS setting being completely crap
A Valve approved API nobody uses because its completely useless
Plugins that have to be used because Valve considers these issues should be
dealt by plugin creators and on a per server operator basis, rather than
doing anything about it themselves
Could this list of issues that are significantly more important than server
operators trying to bring some semblance of fairness to
Counter-Strike:Source go on and on forever?

The worst thing a human can do is surrender their ability to think for
themselves. Congrats.

Jesus fucking christ Valve... Way to shovel bullshit down the throats
of people who bend over backward to support you who receive little or no
reward in return. Hours of my own personal coding flushed down the
crapper with one simple update.

I've been managing game servers well over a decade now, and SRCDS has
to be by far the biggest steaming pile when it comes to Suprise! all your
shit is broken! Hope you had no pressing plans for the weekend =D !!!
banzi console-cowboy patch releases that you could set your watch by.

I feel sorry for all you professional server admins who are trying to make
your living off of providing/maintaining leased SRCDS servers or processes.
If I was in that boat right now, I'd seriously consider taking a header and
breaking an arm or leg in the machine room just to get on workman's comp
for a few months. I'd say that'd give Valve enough time to get their shit
straight... But hey, who am I kidding.

Valve is looking far less like a software company and more like a 30 car
pileup on the interstate as time goes on.

Jackass Factory...
