in the target path for the srcds.exe file you need to indicate which game
you are planning to host on the server.
i.e. -game cstrike

I'm not sure what batch file you are referring to. The only batch file
in the directions was for auto restart of the game if it crashes. I
didn't think that batch file was necessary to run the game.
(I also tried to run the game update and it said "HLDS installation up
to date" so I know the download went fine).

Ok, so now I'm having a different problem. I got cstrike downloaded
following the directions. But when I try to run the srcds command
nothing happens. I also tried to run the srcds.exe to see if a GUI would
show up but nothing happens.

Oh, could it possibly be that I don't have a server.cfg file? In the cgf
folder under cstrike, there is no server.cfg file. The directions said
to "edit (or create)" but if I create, how do I know what to put in the
.cfg file?

Thanks,

Charles

afaik there is also an option in the srcds program that you run that lets

Re: [hlds] LAN Dedicated Server Question

2008-08-20 Thread Cc2iscooL
If you go to the guide, it's in the same area as setting it up to reboot
on crash, where it has the underlined portion.

You can also set -nocrashdialog and it will get rid of *most* of the
dialog box crashes.

So your command line might look like this.

srcds.exe -console -nocrashdialog -game cstrike +map de_dust +maxplayers
16 +sv_lan 1

Re: [hlds] LAN Dedicated Server Question

2008-08-20 Thread Charles Chang
Thank you! I found out it was a network firewall issue. The server needs
27000-27030 TCP access for the server. I am currently downloading
Counter Strike Source and will purchase it on a client side to test the
local LAN game.

Do I later just add the command line you gave me as part of the
executable to set it as a LAN only game?

Thanks,

Charles

You can follow this guide for the initial installation, it works well.
http://www.srcds.com/db/engine.php?subaction=showfull&id=1097362093&arch
ive=

That error there is likely caused by a firewall blocking the connection
out to the Steam servers to retrieve the updates. I don't know what port

it uses by default, so you'll have to excuse me for not having that
information. If you are sure the firewall isn't blocking outbound, you
could try deleting the clientregistry.blob in the directory and trying
the update again.

If the machine running the SRCDS server has a local firewall, you will
have to allow traffic through that firewall to run your server.
Otherwise, as long as all systems have full communications to one
another (if behind one router) you won't have to worry about opening
ports on the router, unless it filters traffic on the LAN both ways,
then you'll have to do a little more configuration to get it working.
27015 TCP/UDP should be all you need for a LAN server.

Good luck!

Re: [hlds] LAN Dedicated Server Question

2008-08-20 Thread Charles Chang
Sorry, first time in this email forum.

Do I just add this command line as part of the executable for the
server?

Also, when following the directions about updating the hlds tools, I get
a "Failed to connect to any GeneralDirectoryServer, Winsock Error 10061
"Connection refused". Is this a firewall/port issue? Is there a list of
which ports we need opened? Also, I'm confused if I'm setting up a LAN,
why does the server need to have ports opened?

Thanks!

Charles

[hlds] LAN Dedicated Server Question

2008-08-20 Thread Charles Chang
For the dedicated server, is the directions the same for setting up for
a local LAN or do all dedicated servers have to go through the Internet?
We have about 150 people in one office to play games and we obviously
don't want all 150 to go through the Internet but through the LAN.

Thanks,

Charles
