Re: [hlds] Linux server, Advice
Can you guys say "Way Off Topic"? There is an hlds_linux list this could have been posted to. Windows admins know this, and will subscribe to that list if they want to discuss it. I'm surprised this thread lasted this long without someone screaming about it. On Wed, 28 Jul 2004 15:08:41 -0700, James Bowling <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I run mainly FreeBSD, Gentoo and Suse. RE: [hlds] Linux server, Advice
I run mainly FreeBSD, Gentoo and Suse. They all seem to give me really good performance. It is really all in how you install them and what you do to optimize your installation. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Matt White Sent: Wednesday, July 28, 2004 9:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [hlds] Linux server, Advice I have heard gentoo linux is a good one. Re: [hlds] Linux server, Advice
Well, you could try posting on the Linux HLDS list :) There really is no "best" flavor, it's whatever you prefer. I for one will recommend Slackware Linux. Packages are easily available for it, has an updating tool, and is rock-solid. The learning curve is steeper than that of Fedora, but once you learn how to use it, it's much easier. It's also one of the oldest distros available. --AgentHH -Original Message- From: Steve! <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Jul 28, 2004 1:37 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [hlds] Linux server, Advice This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Okay, am sick of 'strange' behaviour on windoze server, I can get it running, is fine, then 'something' changes... RE: [hlds] Linux server, Advice
I'd stay away from the less popular linux flavors...getting rpm's will be difficult. When I came onboard with my server company, all of our machines were running redhat. I've since converted all machines to windows server 2003. I'm not sure why you'd want to go backwards. I have a bunch of scripts that I had written for steam. They'll update all your servers at the same time. If you're interested, send an email off list. Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Steve!
