[hlds] Server Hardware Optimization
Hello everyone, figured I'd shoot out my first hlds help request I've run several servers in the past, but never with the intent of hosting a large amount of players like I plan to do Essentially, I have a dedicated server with vmware ESXi installed, the specs of the server itself are as follows: Quad Core Xeon E5520 @ 2.27GHz16GB RAM500GB HDD I wish to create a VM to run my new Garry's mod TTT server with. I've never really gotten into server optimization before, but I've heard source servers can only utilize 1 physical core?If so, would it be a waste to allocate more than 1 vCPU to the virtual machine I'm going to create (to run the gmod server)Since in theory, 1vCPU = 1 Physical CPU core In addition, I've heard some things thrown around like disabling Hyperthreading to boost performance, etc. etc. Anyone have some extra tips on getting my Gmod server to run best with what resources I have? I can create a virtual machine with anything up to the physical limitations of my server, so that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks all.-John AKA Trope___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: https://list.valvesoftware.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/hlds
Re: [hlds] Server Hardware
dean, go for a dual if you can afford the difference, they'll offer you the most bang for the buck (when you compare single, dual and quad boxes). RE: [hlds] Server Hardware
On win2k3, u can run about 3 to 4 20slot servers on these specs (512MB RAM) without any problems, every server uses between 50 to 120 MB of ram depending on running map. For linux I don't have a clue. If u deside to run win2k3 I would advice putting the pagefile on a separate drive/partition. Hope this helps. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dean Owen Sent: Tuesday, February 22, 2005 2:11 PM To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: [hlds] Server Hardware Hello List, I am considering hire/purchase on some server hardware to start a small group of cs:s servers for my clan with colo. Ah of course, that makes sense. Presuming 1GB, how many slots for CS:S would you estimate it can run well? Re: [hlds] Server Hardware
1GB of RAM definitely 2GB preferable Redundant Powersupply since most colocates will give you 2 power sources you need to plug into if that makes sense?
