We have a beta version of the Counter-Strike Server and a new version of
HLTV we'd like to begin testing.

Issues we have addressed with this version...

Counter-strike:
- Fixed server crash/lockup when using radio commands.
- Win32 HLTV proxy will authenticate properly now.
- Fixed spectator exploit.
- Fixed infinite team switch exploit.

HLTV:
- Commentator chat as centerprint.
- Remove % from names and chat text.
- Proxy handles paused games correctly (no 1 second loops).
- Proxy broadcasts now password protectable (clientpassword).
- Fixed recording demos on proxy after first changelevel.
- Fixed 2 printf issues (in logfile and commentator name).
- Added client command 'joingame'. Feature must be enabled on proxy with
'allowJoinGame 1'.
- Added client command 'status'. shows game server IP, number of
spectators and an info text (set in proxy console with 'infotext "my
hltv info text"')
- Added command line parameter '-ip' to specify the in_address for
multihomed proxies
- Fixed 'Local IP' was shown as 127.0.0.1 bug
- Fixed 'Host_Error:UserMsg:Not Present On Client 76' bug. ('connection
attempt failed')
- Fixed wrong TE_TEXTMESSAGE parsing for svc_temp_entity, caused crashs
with AdminMod etc.

These new versions of the Counter-Strike beta server and HLTV are
available for you to download via our ftp site:

  ftp: ftp.valvesoftware.com
login: hlserver
 pass: hlserver

Windows
===
filename: /Beta/Win32/hlds4108a_beta.exe
  md5sum: 1938ba0b998521807ed47b474c4db4d8
files that are replaced: hltv.exe, hltv.cfg, HLTV-Readme.txt,
/cstrike/dlls/mp.dll

Linux
=
filename: /Beta/Linux/hlds_l_3108a_upgrade.tar.gz
  md5sum: c39a385ff62c917afec31d5b242bc29e
files that are replaced:
hlds_l/3108a_changes.txt
hlds_l/HLTV-Readme.txt
hlds_l/hltv
hlds_l/hltv.cfg
hlds_l/cstrike/dlls/cs_i386.so

These two installers are designed for an HLServer installation, but if
you are running Half-Life or Counter-Strike Retail just point the
installer to your /half-life/ or /counter-strike/ directory.

All you need to do is download the appropriate file(s) and replace your
old one(s). It's always a good idea to back-up your old versions first.
Clients using Counter-Strike 1.3 should not have any problems connecting
to your server. If you have any questions, please let me know
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Thanks.

Hey all, I was just wondering if any know ifValve has a similar mailing list
like this one, but geared more towards the SDK/mod/editing aspects of HL. I
checked on the www.valvesoftware.com site and didn't see any info about it.

I am working on a HL mod and I need a good place to discuss HL editing and

Oh, I havent bothered with PB for months and months due to theyre draconian
attitudes on the clan reg system.Glad to see they've mattured enuff to allow
server admins to decide if they want name registration enfoced.

In light of this. I retract my statement and ask valve to support the PB
team to help remove the cheaters for an increadble game.

I must admit it is annoying that clan tag thing, especially as you get no

Re: So long PB, don't let the door hit you on your ass onyourwayout

2001-09-27 Thread Alfred

I suck at PR, I loose my patience way too easily :) (just check my posts on
the Admin Mod forum ;)

I have no idea on the specifics of money, but I do believe that it wasn't
money that stopped HL support. The biggest stumbling block was the lack of
help/technical support from VALVe. Without it PBs functionality was reduces
(severly in some areas) and Tony just didn't think it was worth continuing
"pushing shit up-hill" ;) All this response to the withdrawal of support may
allow a solution to appear however.

Just to put a good word in for valve, they have always been reasonably
helpful with Admin Mod problems (slow sometimes ;) Just look at the new
sv_visiblemaxplayers code they added to HL1108. However, when it comes to
asking for larger things they can be quite reclusive (like my
questions/suggestion for Admin Mod in TF2 ;)

All good points, I have to admit. Much more reasonably explained than
what I found on punkbuster's own forums. They should consider trying to
convince you to do their PR.

While the explanation of additional detection that they wanted to
include seems valid, It doesn't address why maintenance of the current
code is being scrapped. That is the behavior that makes me feel like an
unwitting pawn in a power game.

Obviously, it comes down to Tony getting paid for his work. Certainly I
would never want to dedicate that kind of time to a programming project
where I wasn't getting paid. But then again that was it's genesis, so it
couldn't have come as a surprise.

It's clear Tony has now set his sites on a higher business peak. That's
fine, that's capitalism. But I wonder where the economic problem for HL
punkbuster support really lies. If he was seeking a sum of money mostly
appropriate for a business, all may be lost.

However, if he is only seeking compensation for his personal time, I
wouldn't be surprised if a sum of money could be found to allow him to
spend 25% of his time maintaining HL punkbuster. He'd be able to spend
the rest of the time pursuing his new goals. If he doesn't want to
spare the time, why couldn't a part time junior programmer be hired with
a similar amount of money? While I understand people normally don't
want do discuss financial details in public, if the amount of money
expected was reasonable and made public, it would do a lot to get the
community on his side. Certainly game hosts, cons, leagues and sponsors
could be hit up by the community to contribute if the amount was
achievable. Such generosity would likely shame valve into doing the
same.
