nicing any process that uses your NIC as much as hl does (especially
UDP) will cause packetloss/latency.

Umm no it doesn't, and doing so would be quite a bad idea. Make sure you
don't have anything in whatever scripts you're using to start the server
that is niceing the process like that, as this will likely have a
detrimental effect on performance.

RE: [hlds_linux] Will Running Snort IDS And HLDS Cause Lag

2002-07-10 Thread Brian Vagnoni XO

To Whomever Took The Post The Wrong Way;

I meant no offense by my statement. Granted it wasn't phased the best way it
could have been i was kind of in a rush when I wrote it. Why must people
take everything out of context. All I was trying to do is encourage people
to respond, that's all. No one had at that point. If you are going to qoute
me include the whole post. The line by itself looks bad and by itself it is
out of context.. Again I meant no disrespect so nor did I mean to be rude so
please don't take it that way.

As far as the post not being meant for this list it was. The question was
will snort interfere with a hlds server, I can't think of anything more
related to this list. Where else would I ask this question other than a list
of hlds linux server admins. Snort people who have never run a hlds server
aren't going to know, now are they.

Sincerely

Brian

PS I hope this clears up my intentions, and in the future please don't take
my posts the wrong way I never meanr to be rude and or insulting to anyone.
I always write with the best of intentions in mind and heart, though I admit
I have a bit of an edge and can be very dry and matter of fact. That's just
me.

Geez, what planet are you from? This is a community list where people get

the list, replies are based upon the users knowledge, the time taken for an

I run my stats scripts under linux and I use something a little different.
This helps me out quite a bit. I run the stats script at a very low
priority so it only uses unused CPU cycles (I believe).

[hlds_linux] mod_throttle / linux/freebsd throttling

2002-07-10 Thread Prodigy

There was a post in this list a few days back about mod_throttle.

If you use FreeBSD and you are looking to throttle a bit, then use IPFW's ability set
firewall rules and throttle traffic. This works EXTREMELY well, as you can throttle
by port, range of ports, or just by single IP. You can also be protocol independant
as well, throttling only UDP or only TCP or all.

If you linux, then I recommend you take a look at the QoS features in the linux
kernel. I use the htb queue for mine. This is extremely cool software, and allows
you to really get a cooking setup running. The queing I'm referring to is class
based, so you esentially set one root path, and then specify children off of it. The
children can all borrow from each other when the other child is not using its
bandwidth. There is also the option of bursting to help out under network stress.
Its a little complex to understand if you are new to networking in general, but this
software works EXTREMELY well.

Cheers,

Prodigy

2002-07-10 Thread m0gely

Exactly. What makes it a little more silly is he could just run both
and see what happens. But instead, he asks a question then returns a
rude comment when a response isn't given right away.

It would maybe have been a diff story if he had run them both,
experienced a problem then asked if there was a way to make hlds and
snort run better together, but he didn't get that far. In fact he
didn't even try before starting to ask questions. I find the best way
to learn is to trudge through the muck for a while and wait till you get
so mad your ready to though the keyboard into the monitor before asking
questions :)

Yes, some ppl here know about SNORT, but you definetly are in the wrong
list. This list is to help to solve Half-Life Dedicated Servers for
Linux, and not the applications your server runs.

If you read the SNORT docs, they told you to put it on a machine like
your dedicated firewall or your gateway. Maybe they have some reason to
sugest this.

Again, this question was posted on the wrong list.

[hlds_linux] Server Verification Error

2002-07-10 Thread Prodigy

The last couple days many of my members have been getting these errors when trying to
connect to my server. Killing halflife (client) and then restarting seems to solve
this problem.

I've since restarted all our servers figuring it was some VAC thing. Any one else
having this problem, or have any ideas about it?

Cheers,

Prodigy

Re: [hlds_linux] Will Running Snort IDS And HLDS Cause Lag

2002-07-10 Thread Michael Danicich

In spite of that, I'll still be a nice guy and answer the best I can.

I don't know specifically if snort interferes with HLDS, but I can say
that any small amount of latency introduced by snort is nothing
compared to its value as an IDS. I've always felt that the security
of my server (which does more than HLDS) is more important than
performance, especially when the only people who'll complain about the
extra lag are the ones I probably don't want around anyway.

I've never tested switching snort on/off on my server to see if it
affects ping, but I honestly don't think it really lags it all that
much.

Geez, what planet are you from? This is a community list where people get
together to share ideas and opinions. No one has any obligation to reply to
the list, replies are based upon the users knowledge, the time taken for an
answer and the past history of the requestor.

You are not starting out on a good foot here...

2002-07-10 Thread Brian Vagnoni XO

Dear All;

No one on this list knows anything about snort, man what kind of linux help

something like Black Ice Defender only better. It's for both linux and
windows. i know bid doesn't lag windows server what about peoples experience
with it maybe lagging hlds servers.

If you want to write me privately be my guest at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sincerely

Brian

Ps Thinga that rule:

KDE 3.02
Suse 8.0
XO Communication ISP OC-192 and in the top 5 isps nationwide according to
matrix systems for least amout of latecy, packet loss and the highest level
of reachability nationwide.

Subject: [hlds_linux] Will Running Snort IDS And HLDS Cause Lag

Dear All;

Anyone know anything about Snort IDS? Will running Snort IDS and hlds cause
lag on a server? Specifically my serevr mentioned in a previous e-mail.
Also, anyone know of a good x windows or html front end for snort other than
Demarc Puresecure. Not there is anything wrong with Puresecure, it's actully
really nice once you get everything working. Webmin and it's Snort module
are pretty nice to, again once you get them working.

Sincerely

Brian
