[hlds_linux] Been looking Over My Firebox700 Log Reports And What's With...
Dear All; Been looking Over My Firebox700 Log Reports And What's With ports 32823-32825, 36541, 36584-36586 udp, why so many hits on these ports? People doing Trojan horse port probes? I can't imagine that many hits from so many addresses. My Firebox is a firewall wall for freebsd, Linux, and windows boxes. If you don't have some type of firewall that reports this crap you have no idea just how many people are trying to get into your server and computers. It's really scary though most attempts are lame kiddy hacks at best. However, this mega barrage of kiddy hacks really does a great job of hiding the more serious threats. Ignorance is bliss, until you find out that your computer & connection were used to attack the White House or something like that. Just a note on the Firebox 700 of which I was pleasantly surprised to see. There wax no added lag to the server. I've had Firewalls that have definitely had a major impact on the server and peoples game play. I have people on there with pings of 20 and 30 ms amazes the hell out of me. Even with a full server. I disable just about *everything* since there are very view things I need beyond IDE and network support :) -- Eric (the Deacon remix) ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
RE: [hlds_linux] Just a few things
thanks rick :) I must admit i am kinda new to this, so all feedback is good :) if anyone would like to, im usually on irc @ irc.patchychat.net channel #seigeclan, maybe u could help test it with me maybe even a little game? ;p And its not just the server im kinda new to... I used to be a UT player but played CS when not playing that, just not as a clan... until now... hence the need of a server :) So u could say im kinda new, kinda not new to cs if u get me :D Ian -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Rick and Cheryl Sent: 07 September 2002 09:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Just a few things You know what, I have no sv_min or max settings in my config and it works better that way than anything I have tried setting them to manually. I am also testing the pingboost 2 arg but this is recent and what little I have played with it, I see a modest gain at best. Of course all of those settings are somewhat hardware/connection specific so who knows how it would apply to your box, I suggest a lot of trial and error to nail down your optimum. HLGuard is needed ESPECIALLY if your one of us TFC admins out in the cold for VAC right now. HLGuard is so-so on detection, the first couple of days after 1.2 came out was nice but I have been catching cheaters by spec'ing them again already so I know the cheaters already have patches. I am just biting my tongue and waiting for TFC VAC while doing what I can... mostly depending on regulars to tip me off to possible cheaters. Adminmod is a must in my opinion, not just for the help in administration but players simply expect it these days, I can't imagine a popular server without it. Halfd is also a must unless you have a number of admins helping you out. It makes monitoring and interaction from outside the game a pleasure. It also adds a lot of important stuff on the player side, some of it in addition to adminmod and some that enhances standard adminmod features. After that you can decide if you want bots or not, custom maps, and a log analysis/statistics script. Naturally you will start to look at some of the very kewl adminmod plugins but by then it will be nearing time for one or more of the major packages you have installed to be upgraded. It can be as much work as you want to make it I suppose but to run a good server with happy users (who pay you nothing and often gripe), it takes some time and effort. Welcome to the rat race, it is honestly a lot of fun most of the time. Curse Redhat for being so easy ;) Essentially, when you are compiling a new kernel, a general rule of thumb would be to compile only those things that you absolutely need into the core kernel, and compile everything that you think you might need as a module that can be loaded/unloaded as needed. So go through the kernel configuration (If you want to do it all by hand, I recommend using the 'make menuconfig' option for configuring your kernel) and turn everything off that you don't need, paying attention to look at everything to make sure that the default isn't on. IIRC, some examples of this would be the SYMBIOS SCSI drivers, and the USB drivers. Unless you have a Symbios controller, you probably don't need that enabled, and if it's a server, you probably don't need the USB drivers either (infact, on my servers i even strip out all mouse support, but that's because I'm probably insane). > What services and programs will help me along the way? I want to keep the entire install as trim and speed orientated > as possible. IMHO, ditch FTP unless you have users who need it. If you need to get files onto your machine, use SCP instead, it's more secure, and it's one daemon running instead of two. For firewalling, use IPTables, which also gives you the benefit of being able to setup IP accounting as part of it, removing the need for additional programs to track your bandwidth. For the trimmest possible machine, nothing should be running but the core system stuff, sshd, and hlds_l, and your kernel should be stripped down to the minimal possible configuration and compiled for your CPU architecture. For the best security, everything should be firewalled but your SSH TCP port, and your HLDS_L's UDP ports. One other recommendation I have that is oft overlooked. Use the nice command when running HLDS_L and adjust the servers priority for CPU attention up. I usually run my servers with a nice adjustment of -15, giving it priority for CPU attention over just about every other piece of software running except the kernel. Your milage may vary. :) Sincerely, TrIaX ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

If I can throw in another 2 cents, once a day would be excellent for me, and possibly an admin option to force an update for initial install and critical updates. Anything more would seem a waste IMHO. Re: [hlds_linux] PrivatePlayers 0.10
I did the same thing with out the metamod plugin. Editing my forums to except wonids. Player who are on the forums get differnt access than player who are not .. Like admin votes stuff. But it could work any way you what based on admin rights. I use www.IBForums.com has my forums program. All it needs is a small patch and a custom skin. Works very well and plus I get alot of feed back from the players cause they become part of the forums. http://www.nothsd.com - Original Message - From: "dJeyL" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 12:58 PM Subject: [hlds_linux] PrivatePlayers 0.10 > PrivatePlayers (P2) is a simple server addon (MetaMod plugin) that allows > admins to specify who can connect to their game server(s) by entering WONIDs > in a MySQL database. > > It saves from using AdminMod's MySQL version (that still can be used > for -real- admin access), and will be useful for big online gaming > communities, especially if they already have such a database with their > members' WONIDs (P2 configuration is very easy to adapt to your database). > > More information & download page : http://djeyl.net/p2.php?lang=english > > Cheers, > -- dJeyL > > PS: please do *not* post any comment such as "it's not the place for this > kind of annoucement", if you don't want or need it, just ignore/delete this > post, thanks. ;-P > > ___ > To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: > http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux > ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
Re: [hlds_linux] RE: New Beta Security Modules -September 6- clients crashing
Ive now had to remove the beta modules from servers testing it. On one of our 20 players servers, everyones hlife crashed causing all 20 people to have to reboot. I presume Valve knows there's definately an issue with the latest beta, so hopefully it will be sorted pretty soon ;o) Also at time of joining, people were also complaining of the below query about it crashing after every map change.
