- It's been said before recently that people are giving Valve
-crap for not fixing
- stuff, then when they do, they get crap for that too. This is
-Valve's beta
- test, not ours. When stuff brakes, it's expected. If a plugin
-brakes, then
- it's the plugin's authors responsibility to fix it. If you
-were warned ahead of
- time would you not test it out? How does that help Valve?
-When Valve rolls out
- a patch you don't have a choice anyway the steam clients are
-updated too.
-
-Er, its not just betas they screw up on. They have managed to
-screw something up on lots (if not all) of their final releases.
-And as for fixing things, they always appear to break something else.
-
-I enjoy CS, and I host 2 servers, but I think the support sucks.
-
-This auto update worries me too (and yes, I know you can turn it
-off). But I can see servers auto downloading the latest update
-and crashing because valve forgot to check something before they
-released the update.
-

how can you say that? you act as if any other game company has done as much
over such a long time for any of their games, not charging a dime more to
the players who bought the original game u. no one?

also, whats the point of turning off auto update, when clients cant, and
will therefor not be able to continue playing on your servers?

[hlds_linux] New Security Modules -July 16

2003-07-16 Thread Eric Smith
*** This only affects Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat servers. ***

We've updated the public security modules again. Your Counter-Strike and Day
of Defeat servers should update themselves automatically.

These security modules have some new cheat detections.

Let me know if you have any problems with the security modules and we'll
look into them right away. Thanks.

Re: [hlds_linux] re 1.6 shield

2003-07-16 Thread Daniel Stroven
I just witnessed the rifle/shield exploit again. I didn't see the bug fix
listed on last release, so I assume still working on it. Player would
switch between pistol with shield and his ak47. Thought I would report it,
just in case they thought it was fixed.

rgr, the shield as it is now, will be banned on any server that I run...
imho, there has been way too much changed too fast in 1.6. all the new
guns, the shield, the horrible bullet impact sounds, etc etc.

the rest I could live w/ but the shield just takes it far over teh line
for
 me unfortunately.

I've tried without metamod and the was no

is excellent the rest leave something to be desired
they are now significantly worse than bf1942 I
could run a 40 player bf server for the CPU used
on cs_office.

I can say that, because I have been running a CS server for over 3 years. I have also
run battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament servers, so I think I have some firm ground
from which to speak from.

They would not be able to play on the servers if they crashed, either. And for an
established community like mine, the clients (my players) would wait patiently for me
to upgrade my server manually.

2003-07-16 Thread Steven Hartland
Indeed all though I like the idea I must say we worried about the issues
that steam may present. As it stands we will be manually updating our dev
server testing and then rolling out to our live machines. This way we can:
1. detect issues before they affect the business
2. rollback to previous versions if an issue is detected after roll out to
live machines.

Heh, the one bullet impact sound that's the dumbest and most annoying,
to me, is the one that sounds like sand running through an hour glass or
something. Horrible.
