Yes it does. I believe you are getting confused with DSL modems, which
are really routers.

Thank you Erik,

1 Question, im sure your bogged down with questions but will the Client predication
bug be addressed in this release?

CPU problems aside the reason why most TFC servers are unning hlds1110 still is
because concing and hitscan reg with the ssg is next to impossible at times and its
kinda worrying to think that we will have to use a version we know doesnt work how one
would expect.

It may of been asked already but with so much going on I havent seen it?

Ok so I've been awaiting news on the "later today" release. Are we
supposed to know were to look or is someone planing to tell us?
Steampowered.com refers to client version available on the 10th, so where
do we get the server versions? I'm even on Valve Time and today ends in 1
hour and 45 minutes... Hello?

I don't trust them and we don't make enough money off gameservers to go
through a transition like what I know is coming. I honestly feel sorry for
the big hosting companies looking at this same scenario with knots in their
guts. Good freaking luck guys, we are going to throw our support behind BF1942.
We are seriously considering this move due to the nature of things atm.
As Denmarks biggest CW/PCW hosting company we feel like our carpet has
been pulled under us by Valve.
When we started out we could run 4 x 10 player CS servers on a machine,
today we are forced to downsize to two servers pr. machine.
In other numbers: Valve has reduced our possible income by 50%

Alfred/anyone else at valve, please read that again - you have
practically forced us out of HL business. We're still hanging on, but
business-wise we are losing money because of your changes.
Valve, please respond what your plans are, if any - for fixing this
serious problem.

[hlds_linux] HLDS Version

2003-09-10 Thread Ricardo Parolin Schnekenberg
[ Converted text/html to text/plain ]
Althought I know its a little bit late to ask you this, because of the
releasing of Steam and CS 1.6, but tell me, what is the best HLDS version for
linux, 3110 or 3111x ?

I know that them must have some advantages, but i read a lot of emails saying
something like this:

"Oh, last week I downgrade to 3110"
"I actually use 3110"

this stuff

I´m in doubt on it because the last (at least i think it is) version is 3111d
.

And, about that recent exploit that causes overflow in hlds´ later than 3111d
?

thx

interesting, the Athlon 2500+ is a barton core processor running not significantly
faster (mhz) than a 2200+ but bringing other advantages such as 512kb of L2
vs 256 and 333mhz FSB vs 266.
I'm running a 2800+ barton core as my NS server and have seen some surprisingly
good cpu utilisation from a known cpu pig

wonder if there's something more to it
or just that the barton athlon is the potential hlds cpu of choice.

Steam Issues:
Q: Can I use Steam with a modem?
A: Yes, steam will work for modem users.

Q: Is WON going away?
A: Yes, once we have completed the rollover we will slowly remove parts of
the WON system as they become obsolete.

Q: Has the net code been changed since the beta?
A: No, apart from small bug fixes.

Q: Will my existing 3rd party programs work (i.e Admin Mod, CDeath, ...).
A: In general yes, all existing 3rd party programs can still work under
Steam. The individual authors of each program will need to inform their
users of any install directory or configuration changes.

Q: Do I need to alter my firewall setup?
A: Steam requires some extra ports to be opened for outgoing access, read
this page for details:

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=faq&id=1050915505,27362300,105091
5726,98098300

Q: What happens to my current banlist?
A: Everyone will be getting assigned a new Steam ID and it will not be
possible to convert old banlists.

any answers about the lan w/o internet questions? yes, no, working on it?

in the "couple weeks" mentioned at the top, does that mean 1.6 will then
become the "release" version of CS?

[hlds_linux] Problems connecting to any content server

2003-09-10 Thread Invader Zim
I have 2 steam servers, or rather, was planning to have 2. 1 test server @
my home connection and 1 in a colocation where I've been running a 1.5
server for quite a while, and a 1.6beta server for a few months. So now I
got myself the new linux steam client. The test server updated like a
charm where as I can't even create an account from my colocation server,
so I created an account for the colocation server off my home connection.
Still, the update still does not work:

I can ping a server:

--
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/hlds_l$ ping 213.157.170.81
PING 213.157.170.81 (213.157.170.81): 56 octets data

64 octets from 213.157.170.81: icmp_seq=1 ttl=120 time=47.4 ms
--

nmap can see an open port 27030:

--
Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 3 seconds
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/hlds_l$ nmap -p 27030 213.157.170.81

Starting nmap V. 3.00 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ )
Interesting ports on (213.157.170.81):
Port State Service
27030/tcp openunknown

Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1 second
--

And yet when I try to update all I get is:
--
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/hlds_l$ ./steam -update cstrike /opt/cstrike2/hlds_l [EMAIL
PROTECTED] mypassword Y
Checking bootstrapper version ...
Getting version 0 of Steam HLDS Update Tool
Connection Reset
--

And yet, off my home connection it works like a charm. I just wasted about
4 hours that I could've spent sleeping. No, there is no firewall, no there
are no ports blocked on the colocation's router (see nmap). Anybody got an
idea? Cuz I'm getting well pissed about now.

RE: [hlds_linux] Steam + LAN Gaming

2003-09-10 Thread Mathew Dewar
Ahh but then the advertising that is incorporated into Steam won't go out to
all the big Lan parties.

Couldn't have that now...

I think people ask this question inspite of having read that
because it is so unbelievable, hoping for Valve to realize what a
terrible idea this is and saying "hey, yeah, that's really not a
good thing, we'll look into making LAN games possible without
requiring an INet connection". The way it is now they don't need
to have a LAN mode at all since it doesn't make any sense. In
effect they are killing all LANs. Terrible, terrible idea. I don't
like it at all. To be frank, I fing hate it. Addon and MOD
developers now always need to have an INet connection running in
order to test their stuff. This suxorz major time.

Florian.

Nah, we'd have Eric (Decon) to keep us company.

But back on the subject... is valve really trying to kill off the userbase
that it strove to attain?

I might be a rare case here, but some of us DONT have broadband. Does
that mean that we can't play? Nope. but what it does mean is pure and
utter hell when updates come. I can currently drive 15 minutes, download
the update on a t1, burn it, and then take it home and have fun with it..
or I sit on my dialup with steam that only gets 24600 and wait for hours!

All I have to say is that HL2 single player better not check with Steam,
because, if it does, Valve's gunna screw itself over.

In other words, Valve, you're seriously screwing yourself over, in the
future, I dont want to be sitting with some kids and then mention half
life and they all start laughing because of your demise due to
over-protectiveness, which leads me to my next point.

You are not Microsoft. We do not rely on your products to make our PCs
function. You could dissapear tommorrow and all that would happen would
be like "Hmm, Valve's gone? That sucks big time! I really liked
Half-Life", now if MS would do that pretty much worldwide panic/cause
for concern would happen.. (Linux ppl, you know where i'm coming from)

Microsoft got away with WPA because of it's sheer size and control.

Think about it.

Thanks for you time,

Adam
